Mathias quickly started scrambling their mess up. There were loose papers, sunscreen, loose change, a little pocket mirror, and much more junk. They werenât surprised this happened to them, but it still sucked.
As Mathias was picking up items they heard the other offer to help. They looked up and sheepishly smiled. âThanks..Well I was planning to get a new backpack but not so soon.â Mathias slightly laughed to himself and scratched the back of his head. This sucked.

Backpacks were clearly the superior bag. You could carry anything in them not to mention the large quantities of items you could carry in them. Backpacks could do anything, at least Mathias thought so. The blue backpack placed on their back had been with them since the very beginning, it has probably been through more stuff than Mathias could ever dream of.
So as the sun shined and the birds flew about Mathias grabbed that backpack, obviously packing everything they could need in it first, and headed out into the world.
As Mathias strolled along the twisting streets of Swynlake they felt more at home than they ever did in this town. It was actually nice, sure they would probably get so terribly lost that theyâd freak out, but it was worth it. It was a great day, and gosh darn it they needed to get some sunshine!
The town was active as well, bustling of people walking to and fro. Entering stores or exiting restaurants with small doggy bags, which almost made them consider going to get some lunch. Well that was until Mathias heard an odd sounding rip. Then the multiple thuds that followed along with the sudden loss of weight against their back confirmed their theory.
Mathias stood frozen for a moment. Then slowly turned around and looked down at the ground. All of the things they had in their bag was now scattered about the cobble path. While their backpack had a huge gaping hole in it. Mathias stared at the pile for a minute

So, messenger bag, the occasional satchel; admittedly, he didnât have too much stuff to cart around with him.
He also didnât tend to clean out the bag. Every so often he would hold it over a trash can and shake it out, dust out the inside, but there was currently a layer of receipts and things he had hahasardly thrown into the bottom of the bag, either because he was too lazy to properly throw it away or he thought he might need it in the near future. It was a black hole of random crap - stick your hind in and you could grab just about anything.
So when he was walking along the street, headphones in blasting his latest favourite song, and someoneâs bag gave way and spilled its guts into the street, Ken stopped. He might have something for that, maybe. He could at least help them pick their stuff up, at least.
Tucking one headphone into the neck of his shirt, he looked from the mess, to the stranger, and back again. âWell thatâs shit luck,â He murmured, more to himself than to anyone else. âHere, let me help.â

This is not the Grocery Store // Mirror and Chicken
Letâs take a moment to zoom out on this situation:
You had Charlie, who was about 5 foot 6 or nearly 170 centimeters, and, er, maybe 60 stone soaking wet. That rock lamp of his was a chunky, heavy piece of weaponryâ definitely good for bludgeoning a zombie or two. Charlie would be lying to himself if he hadnât looked at the rock lamp online, read about all its purported medicinal and mystical properties, and thought to himself, huh, you could really smash in a zombie head or two with that. (Practicalâ Charlie was always practical.)
Then you had this strangeâŚboy/possible demon/possible apparition. He looked ghost-like to Charlie. He had inches and inches on him, probably over six feet. And he was skinny but probably still had a couple stone on Charlie too. And while zombies were clumsy and slow, this guy looked like he knew how to duck and cover from the dangers of a rock lamp.
So: yes, Charlie was at a severe disadvantage. He didnât feel very threatening either, admittedly. If the bloke lurched at Charlie, odds were he screamed and dropped the lamp instead of taking that first swing.
Despite that, the boy was intimidated. He flailed his hands out, gestured toward the mirrorâŚ
âWaitâŚâ uttered Charlie. âW-wait, youâreâ are you sayinâ you came through theâŚthe mirror?â The lamp in his hand slumped a little with his shoulders.
Mathias was pretty tall. Exactly six feet one and a half inches tall. But their height did not mean they were tough. Sure they could dodge but to be honest they were quite clumsy and their height did not help that fact. But hey at least Mathiasâs height was kinda intimidating..?
Mathias froze for a second. Why did they let that slip? That was so dumb. Why did they do that? âUhhh...â Mathias had no idea what to do.
âNo...? What? thatâs crazy. Itâs not like I can walk through mirrors into an entirely different dimension. Thatâs weirdâ Mathias could feel themselves getting red and their hands were getting clammy. Mathias knew they were bad at lying and at the moment they hated that fact. Mathias let out a sheepish smile not really knowing what to do. Maybe this kid didnât hate magic and they would be able to get out of this situation..? But what if this boy did?! Or told some magick hunters?! What then?! Mathias was very stressed.
âYea Iâm pretty sure mirror walkers arenât real. Thatâs crazy...â Oh god Mathias was so bad at this and it was just getting worse and worse.
Sidenote who was this kid?! He was super short and obviously just as spooked as Mathias ((then again who wouldnât be spooked when someone magically appears in your room)) and he clearly was not ready for this ordeal. Mathias was new to Swynlake so that did not help at all. They knew pretty much no one.

Mathias noticed the sass but quickly ignored it. Sassing back would just make things worse plus Mathias wasnât really someone to send attitude back or have an attitude at all.
âGood point. Well hey at least we donât feel stupid alone..???â Mathias was finding it very very hard to look on the bright side. This was very annoyed and usually Mathias didnât get annoyed they were usually a very calm person. But at the moment they were slightly annoyed.
Mathias listened to the other and slightly nodded.
âThat makes sense and people that have lived here long enough seem to understand whatâs happening so thereâs no way that the streets totally change because if they did everyone would be confused. And that would be very dumb.â
Mathias half smiled at the manâs comment about Mordor
âHa. Yea but instead of a ring I have a grocery list.â Mathias then followed the other in the direction that hopefully lead to the grocery store.

Mathias looked at the other with a very very confused expression. The streets were movingâŚ? That made no sense. How could the streets which are permanently on the ground unmoving able to change? Then again Mathias knew they shouldnât entirely be questioning this. They could walk through mirrors.
âWait so they actually changeâŚ? How is that even possible?!â Mathias was very confused by this whole magic town thing, but hey at least this other guy was too. Mathias was happy they werenât alone in this quest for a grocery store but then again they both were lost, so it wasnât really a win.
âWell hey a map is better than nothing I guess..? If the streets move and are confusing does the map even work though..? Gosh I just have to get some milk I didnât think that this would become a journey from a J. R. R. Tolkien novel.â

That didnât excuse his attitude, but it motivated it.Â
âI figure that whateverâs going on, the streets canât deviate too far from their original path, right? So in theory, even if things donât match up exactly the layout on the map should give us some sort of insight as to where things ought to be.âÂ
He looked down at his phone and then back up at the road sign before hesitantly taking a couple steps down the road he had been going down to begin with.Â
âRight then, Mordor awaits.âÂ

Mathias froze. Why did they put themselves into this situation?! Stupid stupid stupid. This boy wasnât that threatening. He was stuttering for crying out loud...But he had a rock thing. With a good ol swing Mathias knew they would be down for the count. Of course they didn't have anything to defend themselves with. So Mathias just had to play around and try their best to dance around the questions without getting the other mad.
âOkay okay I wonât move. Iâll just stand here...unmoving...yup..â When the boy questioned how Mathias got into the room they didnât know what to do. They knew they couldnât just explain it heck they didnât even know this guys name...Why did this have to happen? Why couldnât it have been the grocery storeâs mirror?!Â
âOh well.... uh you see I was ya know walkin around and then...IÂ went through this thing..? And Iâm here... It was by accident I thought it was the grocery store mir-thing..? Yeah!â Smooth.Â

This is not the Grocery Store // Mirror and Chicken
As the boy started to threaten them with the weird rock lamp thing Mathias almost laughed. This was a terrible situation but it was also pretty funny. Like first they held back errands, then they went through the wrong mirror, and now they are being threatened by a shortish boy with a weird stone lamp thing.
Besides the odd and slightly funny circumstance Mathias knew taking the mirrors were a bad idea and that they shouldnât have done that in the first place. So Now they were in this situation and knowing how people are, this wouldnât be an easy situation to navigate.
âWoah there Iâm not here to hurt you I just got lost and ended up here..? â Oh gosh that sounded bad. Mathias had no idea how he was going to get around this. âJust put down the rock lamp salt thing. Iâm not going to hurt you..â Mathias slowly raised their hands up showing that they werenât armed and that they werenât a threat. âSo yeah just imagine I was never here and Iâm going to go back to where I came from and yeah. Cool? Coolâ As Mathias talked they slowly started to step back towards the mirror.
Got lost and ended up hereâŚÂ
Charlie clutched the rock salt lamp even harder. Because Charlie didnât know what that meant. He didnât know what kind of creature was before him, if he was real or if he was a figment of Charlieâs damaged imagination, or if he was Charlieâs own consciousness materializing to deliver some kind of lesson, message, or warning. Or maybe all three.Â
Since Bill Cipher broke out and, er, broke reality, Charlie didnât know what to think about reality at all.Â
So where was here? And where had he come from? And why was the strange apparition/demon/warning/insert-other-options-here backing up toward Charlieâs bedroom mirror?Â
âN-no! Stopâ do-donât move!â Charlie stuttered. He extended the rock salt lamp, as if he were prepared to brandish it like a sword. âI w-will throw this! Howâd you get in here?â

Mathias liked Swynlake. The citizens they had met were nice and the overall vibe of the town was rather positive. The one thing they didnât like about the town was the streets. It was weird, but it felt like the streets changed? Mathias did not understand it in the slightest. They did know that Swynlake was a magic friendly town so maybe that had some part in it?
Even though the streets were confusing it wasnât as bad as the mirror dimension. In the mirror dimension everything looked the same. It was calming but also terrible. Also no one could help Mathias with directions in the mirror dimensions. They were alone.
It was a pretty nice day. Only a few clouds in the sky and it was much better compared to the rain the town usually got. So Mathias decided to seize the moment and go to the store. They only needed to pick up a couple of things and they already knew going through the mirrors was not going to happen. ((Last time they tried going through the mirrors they almost got attacked by a boy with a salt lamp.)) So that meant they had to take the streets. So they grabbed their backpack and wallet and headed out to the store.Â
At first Mathias knew where they was goingâŚAfter a little bit they werenât to sure. They were taking lefts when it should have been a right and they were just getting more and more confused. As Mathias walked around they saw a man a little ways away. Maybe he could give them directionsâŚ? It was worth a shot. So Mathias picked up the pace and sped walked to the other
âHey! Uh do you know how to get to the nearest grocery store? Iâm a little lost. It kinda feels like the streets change every time Iâm trying to find something hahaâ Mathias sheepishly smiled and adjusted their backpack straps as they talked.

Mathias liked Swynlake. So far the citizens that lived here seemed pretty nice and the overall vibe of the town was rather positive. But there was one single thing they didnât quite get yet. The streets. Every time they went out to go to a store or restaurant it was almost like a maze. It felt like the streets changed each day.
Sure Mathias could always travel through the mirrors. But that was much more difficult. The streets were hard to navigate but the mirrors were much worse. At least out on the streets they could ask for directions. In the mirror dimension Mathias was alone.
It was a pretty nice day. There were some clouds in the sky but other than that there was nothing wrong with the weather. Perfect day to go out to get some errands done. Last time they tried to get errands done they traveled through the mirrors and it went very very badly....So this time Mathias was going to just walk.Â

This is not the Grocery Store // Mirror and Chicken
Charlie had about an hour and a half to squeeze in what he hoped would be a stress-free, vision-free, solid one cycle of REM before he had to drag himself out of bed to grab dinner-on-the-go and be at the hospital by 18:00.
This was just enough time to reap the necessities of sleep without falling deep enough that he might actually have a vision. It was, like, a 90-minute shot of sleep. An energy bar. A pump of caffeine injected behind his eyelids, with no side effects!
This was the hope at least, and Charlie was planning to take short naps for the rest of his life so he would never have to dream again. This would be a period of intense experimentation, of course, as he narrowed down the 90 minutes into smaller chunks if this inevitably did not have the desired effect. But Charlie was choosing to be optimistic: he was capable of ninety minutes of uninterrupted, clear-skied, counting-sheep sleep.
He made all the necessary arrangements. He set the alarm, turned off the overhead lights, turned on the comforting pink glow from his Himalayan Salt Lamp, lit a stick of incense that smelled of smoky lavendar, and in the t minus ten minutes that he needed to be in his bed, Charlie sat criss-cross on his floor, in his pajamas, practicing his breathing techniques. In⌠out. InâŚout. InâŚ
Creak.
Charlieâs entire body tensed like someone had jabbed him with an electric taser. His eyes snapped open and he was staring at someoneâs shins. Someoneâs shins, someoneâs legs, someone. Someone was in his room?!
Oh bloody hell, had he passed out trying to meditate and now he was already dreaming, what the fuâ
Charlie scrambled up, his socked heels sliding on the wood floor until he bumped into his own dresser. He squeaked, the stranger turned aroundâ
âDonât hurt me!â Charlie blurted right away, and he snatched the salt lamp off the dresser, nearlyâ but not quiteâ unplugging it as he clutched it in front of his chest. âIâ I have aâ a salt lamp, an-and Iâm not afraid to use it!â Â

It doesnât take but one look up to know how hard it is to reach the stars And I've felt my share of loneliness, still feel it now from time to time I try to get some rest, these issues tend to fade with morning light But even if my darkness has decided where it stays I suppose that I will close my eyes and try to find another way Is it love that keeps me planted here or the fear of something new Won't come along if I leave either way I donât know what to do Iâve tried my best to figure out those pieces that I lack Now I feel all that Iâve lost pulling me back Oh yes, I feel all that Iâve lost pulling me back

Job hunting // Belle and Mathias
Going to Swynlake had to be the best thing Mathias has ever done. They were free from their mother and they were able to live their own life for once. But one of the downsides with being alone was money. Sure they ran away with enough to get them through a couple of months but they knew they needed to find some type of work before those couple of months ended. So that meant job hunting.
Job hunting was difficult it didnât help that Mathias barely knew any of the streets or locations yet. They had seen some signs up at a bar or two, but they knew they definitely didnât want to work there. It wasnât their cup of tea, quite literally they didnât drink. As they walked around they started to lose hope until they came to a little store.
âChapter Three.. Huhâ Mathias talked to themselves as they read the sign that hung above the store. There was another sign in the window that read Now Hiring. Mathias loved to read so maybe this would be a good place to work. They slowly opened the door and looked around the store. There were books everywhere and they almost didnât see the lady standing to the side putting books on top of a shelf.
âExcuse me..? I saw your sign outside of the shop and I was hoping to maybe get an application or interview?â

This is not the Grocery Store // Mirror and Chicken
Mathias usually does their shopping in the morning. Itâs early enough where thereâs no crowd and it leaves the rest of the day open for other things. When Mathias woke up to go to the store they quickly saw how gloomy it was outside. It was raining and humid outside causing it to be mucky and kinda gross. Mathias obviously didnât want to walk around in that so they decided to wait till the weather cleared up.
Mathias waited and waited until it was about 4 pm. When they looked outside it was the same gross weather. They knew they couldnât push back the shopping till tomorrow. They had already done that and their fridge was pretty much empty. Mathias didnât know what to do until their eyes fell onto the mirror that sat in their apartment. They knew this was a bad idea. It was already confusing enough finding your way around this town, but the mirror dimension was nearly impossible. But they really needed to go to the store. Mathias decided that one way or another they needed to learn their way around the mirror dimension so they might as well start learning.Â
The first thing Mathias did was they grabbed a spool of yarn and tied the loose end to an arm of chair and kept a hold of the bundle. They always did this so they would always know how to get back home. The next thing Mathias did was grab their backpack, wallet, and grocery list. They then stepped in front of the mirror with their arms crossed. âOkay...I got this...â With that Mathias took a step through the mirror and entered the mirror dimension.
The mirror dimension was like a Carnivalâs maze of mirrors but much more confusing and it never ended. Everywhere you looked there were mirrors of different sizes and shapes. It was actually somewhat pretty...and a little eery. The mirror dimension was colorless except for some of the frames of the mirrors. As Mathias walked around he came to a simple plain square mirror. Mathias had learned many restaurants and stores had these plain and simple mirrors. So they crossed their fingers and stepped through the mirror.Â
When Mathias entered the location on the other side of the mirror they quickly realized that they were in a bedroom not a bathroom of a store. Mathias slowly looked around âThis is not the grocery store...â As Mathias talked they heard a creek of a floor board and slowly turned around face to face with a scared and confused boy that looked about the same age as them.Â
