I was at a courthouse once, and saw an indigenous australian woman in a dressing gown very carefully and gingerly making her way down the steps outside the courthouse, surrounded by family who were helping her down the stairs. We asked if she was OK, because she looked awful. She looked like she should have been wrapped up in bed with blankets and hot soup, not on the steps of a courthouse.
One of her family told us that she had given birth yesterday evening, but that Child Protection services had taken her baby away with no warning, claiming that she wasnt prepared to look after him. What had happened, is that she'd literally only just given birth -- hadn't even passed the afterbirth yet, is holding her blood-coated, crying, newborn baby to her chest -- and a nurse asked what her feeding plan was. She was tired from the birth and distracted by the brand new baby in her arms and thrown off by the timing of the question, but still, she managed to answer, and said she planned to breastfeed him whenever he was hungry.
Well apparently that wasn't enough of a plan for the hospital staff, who reported her and claimed that she was unprepared to look after the child, and claimed that had no social supports, and that the baby was at risk if left with her. All because a brand new mother, 30 seconds after giving birth, didn't have a PowerPoint presentation ready to go that cited the timing cycle she would feed her kid on, and instead simply said that she would feed him when he was hungry.
Child Protection services showed up, took her kid, and she was told to show up to court the next day to contest custody if she wanted her baby back.
So a woman who had given birth less than 24 hours prior was forced to rally her family and show up to court to prove that she a) had a feeding plan for the child, and b) had enough social supports to justify reclaiming her baby.
It was one of the most appalling things I'd ever seen. I don't even know if she won her case. They didn't know at the time we saw them, and after that brief interaction on the stairs, i never saw them again. I sincerely hope she got her newborn baby back.
That was about 5 years ago. And the exact same kind of thing is still happening today.
News broke today from a South Australian whistle-blower of the appalling treatment new mothers frequently receive, including hospital staff taking the baby away from the mother "for medical tests," only for the mother to then be told, with absolutely no prior warning, that the baby was not going to be returned to her.

Ok, yes, this is adorable and I know why we all love it.
But also--I know that face in the first pic. That's "I've wandered off in my head and have totally lost track of the fact that I'm here in this room right now I wonder if box jellyfish are venomous to OTHER box jellyfish and what happens if a whale swallows an irukandji along with all the tiny krill do they die or like..." followed by "OH FUCK yep I was definitely paying attention, smile and flirty wink to cover!"

Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?
For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.
But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

Botanist sequel you say? 👀
I DO say!
The very first fic I posted to Ao3, the first fic I'd written since I was a teenager, was a work inspired by Inex's AWAU. It featured a sexy moment in the Kaer Morhen hot springs with a character I only named The Botanist. I have always intended to do a second part to that work, one wherein the Botanist gets to talk to Ciri about why she values plant knowledge and science in a world full of magic and Mages, and a chance to send her home to her lover after her sabbatical among the witchers.

Alright, @ladynearthelake! That's the ongoing WIP for A Life Alone, a multi-chapter work in a Modern AU series. This work focuses on Geralt finally going to a damn therapist to deal with his trauma and the really bad habits and decisions that have resulted from that--like being a total dick to his ex boyfriend Jaskier, starting fights with his brothers, and just the whole entirety of his toxic relationship with Yen.
We're neeeeaaarly done, with likely one chapter to go! I started re-writing at some point way back there, and just started a whole new doc, thus the "2."
