BA3a Reflective Journal Week 1
An introduction to 3rd year Illustration at Norwich University of the Arts
Towards the end of year 2 our year group was given an opportunity to present our work to the third year tutors. Showing the work we created throughout our second year of University and proposing what we would like to work with for our final undergraduate year.
I considered using some past and personal experiences to influence my work for third year. In a nutshell, I had suffered for 5 years with depression through my teenage years which caused me to self harm and starve myself and I was very suicidal. I was admitted to hospital after a suicide attempt and was put on medication. I tried every coping mechanism you can think of but nothing really helped me in expressing what I felt inside that was completely invisible to everyone else. The only thing that helped me show what I was feeling was art. I was able to bring my drawings and paintings to my therapist and show her the interwoven metaphors that I couldn’t articulate through words.
My story isn’t something to be upset about, quite the opposite in fact. It made me appreciate life so much more and the role art can play in healing a broken mind. Art Therapy is definitely something that I want to explore in my final year of Uni.

Some samples of knitwear that I made. I love Knitting and have some experience with textile design, the knitting patterns which I had to follow in order to create these were quite complex, in particular, knowing when to change wool colour.
These were done outside of school.

Again using Paul Nash as influence.
Study of an over-turned tree stump showing shattered roots. This had a part to play in my final piece.

Still Life composition
This was included in our "Deconstruction" theme for our coursework, mixed media (Charcoal, black card). The study on the left was from direction observation, however when we were starting to draw, we were told not to outline each object but to draw in the lines where one object stopped and another began. The study on the right reflects the theme of "Deconstruction". We had to photocopy our artwork and cut out shapes from the photocopy and some black card and left to decide how we would place the cutouts on a separate piece of paper to show how that objects could be 'deconstructed'.
