This has got to be one of the most viral “weird” animal photos on the internet and I’ve seen it mislabeled as a closeup of an earthworm, a tapeworm, a maggot, and a “tube worm” which comes closest because it IS a deep-sea hydrothermal worm, but it’s not the kind that makes a tube. People assume they’re looking at the head of some terrifying little sea serpent but this is just the little beak proboscis of a pretty little scaleworm:
They’re polychaete worms but they’re more isopod-shaped than worm-shaped. Look how HUGE the scales are! It’s practically an armadillo.
There’s even an utter nonsense, fake reconstruction that gets passed around like it’s the real full body image:
The jaws don’t even work that way! They actually close side to side, like insect mandibles!
UPDATE I’m delighted to learn these are actually one of the few polychaetes with up and down jaws after all!!
Here’s a much, much larger species of scaleworm, with golden bristles!
The entire part that looks like a “head” with the jaws is just proboscis and can be pulled all the way inside :)
You can see this giant one alive at one minute in, here:
