Faerie Graves

Faeries are immortal but not invulnerable, and can die from being wounded, for example, though it is rather rare. If a faerie dies, their gem will sprout into a tree that will grow where they fell. These special kinds of weeping willows with multi-coloured bark and leaves are known as faerie graves. They can be found around the world, as it is custom to leave the gem wherever it fell.

A long time ago, the bitterness between the two faerie monarchs became so great that the two groups of faeries waged a full-on war with each other. After a particularly bloody battle, that saw many faerie lives lost, the war ended. The field where this battle took place is now covered in fairy grave trees.

This faerie graveyard is tended to by a little dark faerie named Antiopa. The faeries do not like to feel sad, so they try not to think about their dead. It is up to Antiopa to mourn the dead for all of them, and so she is always crying.

Antiopa's design is based off of the mourning cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa).

Faeries

There are two societies of faeries in Kythera. The dark faeries, created by Calliope, and the light faeries, created by Arcadia. They are actually supposed to be a single people, but their monarchs, the light faerie king Danaus and the dark faerie queen Tyria, have a very tumultuous relationship. There are times when the faerie monarchs are very much in love, and all the faeries are united, and other times when they are not speaking to each other, and the faeries are instructed to stay in their separate kingdoms (though they don’t always follow those orders).

Faeries can come in many different forms. Some are small and animal like, and others have a more humanoid appearance. Though there are some similarities between all of them. They all have wings that are similar to those of butterflies or moths, and all of them, even the more humanoid ones, have fur. The faerie monarchs are the largest of all the faeries, with Tyria standing at 10 feet tall.

Every faerie has a special gemstone, which serves as the source of their power and immortality. As long as their gemstone is whole, they need not eat, sleep or even breathe like mortals do. The faeries gemstones are all unique. Danaus’ gemstone brims with bright sunlight, while Tyria’s is a void of blackness. If a faeries gem is shattered, which is very rare, they lose their powers and become mortal, and eventually age and die.

Danaus' design is based on the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and Tyria's is based off the cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae).

Magic

The magic of the world of Kythera is split up into light and dark magic, and also consists of eight elements. There are four base elements, which mix together to form the four rarer elements.

The four base elements are fire, water, air and earth.

Fire + Air = Electricity

Air + Water = Ice

Water + Earth = Nature

Earth + Fire = Metal

Each of the eight elements has a light and dark version to it, making up a total of 16 elements.

Some magical creatures may be aspected to a particular element, meaning they can only use magic of that element. This is most clearly demonstrated within dragons and kobolds. There are different types of dragons and kobolds for each of the elements, and they look very different depending on their element. The fairies also often have an element that they are most closely related to.

Deities

The world of Kythera was created by two goddesses. The sun goddess Arcadia, and the moon goddess Calliope. They are deeply in love with each other.

Arcadia is very warm, confident and outgoing. Though she can also burn very hot like the sun, having quite the quick temper towards any who try to slight her. Her magic is fire aspected, like the burning sun.

Calliope is a lot more demure, quiet and shy. When upset she will close herself off from everyone and cry for a long time. Her magic is water aspected, like how the moon controls the tides.

They are also considered to be the goddess of light and the goddess of darkness, which are the two main types of magic in the world. Light magic is that of creation, while dark magic is that of destruction. Dark magic is more powerful than light magic, but also more difficult to control.

Some magical creatures may be light or dark aspected, which means they can only use that type of magic. Mortals can usually use both types of magic, however, use of dark magic has been outlawed since the time a powerful sorcerer used it to take over the world. Despite this, dark magic is not inherently more evil than light magic, it can just cause more damage in the wrong hands.

Dark creatures and races, such as the dark faeries, vampires, snow elves, goblins, etc., were created by and fall under the watch of Calliope, while the light creatures and races, such as light fairies, humans, sun elves, etc., were created by and fall under the watch of Arcadia.

Therefore, many human kingdoms focus their worship on the sun goddess, though they acknowledge the moon goddess’ importance too. The religion is matriarchal, so the temples and churches across the land are led by priestesses.

Lore

I am going to be writing up some of the basic lore of the world of Lunar Flare to share on here, since I have the urge to info dump about it so badly so this might help get it off my chest.

(I am still writing book 3, it is just taking quite a bit longer than expected.)

To that point, I have had to finally decide on a name for the world, and I have tentatively chosen Kythera. (It is based off the term Antikythera, which was a device the ancient Greeks used to predict eclipses.)

I will be breaking it all up into several posts about different topics, including the world's deities, magic system, the faeries, angels, elves, demons, other types of creatures and more.

Most of these posts should also come with gorgeous artwork by Tsar. I hope you will enjoy it.
