I wasn’t raised on hip hop. It pains me to say, but no. I learned in the night, after school, before my gospel-only mom came home from work. I learned without the albums, or what I could purchase in secret. But what I know, I cultivate in my heart. I don’t yell my hip hop in the streets. I don’t sing along for all to know that I have the lyrics memorized. I hide them in my heart. I feel them in my spirit. I swell with pride at their origins, smirk with smugness at their cleverness, and weep in secret at their pain. I wasn’t raised on hip hop. But it was raised in me.
