Hey! I know that tumblr blog themes aren't as much of a thing these days, but if you have one you particularly like, or think is interesting/unusual, maybe reply to or reblog this post?
I'd love to hear about it, or even just be pointed in the right direction so I can look at how some nice themes do things!
I've recently become interested in customizing my tumblr blog theme and I want to see what's out there beyond just the same tiny handful that tumblr is willing to surface on the official themes page.

I legitimately think that there is something of value gained just from keeping mask-wearing within the window of what's considered socially acceptable (in the places where it ever was, anyway). I don't know how it ended up elsewhere in the world but I think it's a real shame that US culture didn't shift enough to put strong social pressure on people to wear masks while they're obviously sick-- not even in pretty liberal areas. But at least if you're not the only person around who ever wears a mask-- if it's common enough that masking doesn't get you lots of weird looks-- it's more available as an option for people who would like to reduce their chances of infecting others.
is there a case for perpetual masking post covid that does not also apply pre covid? i feel like there isnt. like, covid isnt uniquely virile or whatever, its just new. and now its not really new anymore.

This image is credited to Miloslav Druckmüller, Peter Aniol, Martin Dietzel, and Vojtech Rušin. The website it comes from, which contains a TON of gorgeous high-res eclipse photography, can be found here: http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/Index.htm .
It's a whole big project, to try to capture and process high quality images of solar eclipses, and there are only a few minutes every year or two to do it.
Please try to include credit and source links when you post someone else's work. Even if you don't care about credit at all, it's really nice to be able to click a link and find more work from the same source!

oh if you dismissed or otherwise missed it, tumblr has a user survey going right now where they ask for feedback on a bunch of site features, notably including search and site harassment

Utterly fascinated by this question and by the responses so I want to disambiguate a bit if you'll allow me:
choose whatever is closest to being accurate for you if none are an exact fit, tumblr polls are limited to 12 options
other as in other than your agab, not other than your gender. so for eg a cis woman reading this the question is if you were amab would you be a trans woman do you think

i fucked up that poll.... options should have been "more sociable" and "less sociable" and "about the same" etc..... in my defense I am very VERY tired

Do you think you've been more sociable on Tumblr after the end of the Boop April Fools Event than you were before the event began?

(Remember, you can think multiple are a cause, we are just asking you choose the biggest cause if you had to. And be charitable, if your true guess is ~75% the same as one of the answers, choose that answer instead of "other")

My understanding was that Weird Al in fact legally has to ask for permission to avoid getting sued, because parody law only covers you if the parody is directly commenting on the original work that it's a parody of.
Contention: while it's cool of Weird Al to ask permission to parody songs as a professional courtesy thing, and in general he seems like a stand-up guy, I see posts circulating occasionally that imply or outright state that this should be the norm for all parodies and similar derivative works, and it's obvious to me that would be straightforwardly terrible for art and media.

all these comments saying "I thought this was satire until I saw the dates!!!" buddy. 2013 was extremely well past the internet's lolrandom phase. by, like, most of a decade. I am pretty confident these posts were in fact goofing on that yes.
mom, dad… i’m…. RANDOM!! LOL XD

Unclear to me how someone struggling to make rent would feel about being given a gift sub to a website. A big swathe of people already get real scoldy about the mere concept of someone paying for ad-free or badges or crabs or y'know anything from tumblr. I'm not one of those but also if I was e-panhandling for money to live and someone bought me ad-free tumblr instead, like. I don't think I'd be thrilled.
I guess the BOGO model could at least work a little better for that though, more "I already have this for myself so I'm sending you this nice thing it comes with" rather than "I saw you can't afford food this week so I decided you should have $5 of tumblr instead of $5 to spend how you see fit 🙂"
Has the tumblr community ever considered... buying tumblr? Like obviously the most recent purchase price would easily be within range of a moderately successful fundraiser, the ongoing operating costs are a mystery but basically replacing staff for dedicated volunteers would probably shave down a lot... as someone who has basically externally replaced native search for this site, would you like a crack at the actual site search? Has this been floated already? Is it a bad idea? Good but bad?
What's the most recent purchase price?

Politics also provides an easy way to feel a sense of purpose. You don't have to feed the hungry or sit with the widow to be moral; you just have to experience the right emotion. You delude yourself that you are participating in civic life by feeling properly enraged at the other side.
The most important story about why Americans have become sad and alienated and rude, I believe, is also the simplest: We inhabit a society in which people are no longer trained in how to treat others with kindness and consideration. Our society has become one in which people feel licensed to give their selfishness free rein. The story I’m going to tell is about morals. In a healthy society, a web of institutions—families, schools, religious groups, community organizations, and workplaces—helps form people into kind and responsible citizens, the sort of people who show up for one another. We live in a society that’s terrible at moral formation.
i've probably posted this before but idc. posting it again. gift link so's youse can read it. you should.

If the easy sharing and collaboration features are important to you, I highly recommend cryptpad. It's got the spreadsheets and powerpoints and forms and all that mess too.
FYI I just came across a thread on twitter which says that an author shared on google docs an explicit story with a friend for beta reading and google removed the file due to violation of TOS (apparently it has been updated where you are not allowed to share anything with sexual content). Not sure if it’s just this instance or if it’s going to become a widespread thing but if you guys write in google docs MAKE BACK UPS!!
(Instagram link to the screenshots)
Edit: also wanted to add that it seems that Microsoft word has the same language in their TOS so onedrive is not a safe alternative!
