Dubai: the melting pot of culture and skyscrapers
Dubai is one of the wealthiest and popular of the seven emirates. It is known for its skyscrapers, shopping malls and the melting pot of culture where different people around the world gather to live, work, and visit in a one city.
On our previous family trip we visited Dubai. After our 9 hours flight, the pilot announced that the plane will prepared to land. As we buckle our seatbelt I saw the magnificent night life in the country and It’s famous landmark, the tallest building in the world - the Burj Khalifa. Then right after we landed, we ate on a local fast food chain in our country “Chowking” and I remember how funny my father thought that the server was a Filipino, and of course, he spoke tagalog then the server told us the he isn’t Filipino. And that was our first encounter to a foreign worker in Dubai.
On our first week, I tried different kinds of food. I ate local foods and foreign foods that isn't available in our country. It was such a fun and mind blowing experience knowing that it might took years or decades before I got to try it again.
The next week, my and I went to famous places in the city. We went to dessert safari and It was a memorable experience. We ate, watch the performances of the locals, ride the camels, tried henna tattoo and lastly, ride the car in sand. It was a memorable experience because I've haven't tried this the last time we went to Dubai due to my young age.
On the next day, we went to the tallest building in the world, the burj khalifa. Next to it, is a mall called the old town palace. It is a vintage looking mall and has marvelous architectural designs. Then we spend the remaining days of the week on beaches and I must say the water was so cold that I can't even stay long being wet on the beach.
On our third week, we decided not to go shopping or went to famous places in the city. We stayed home to celebrate Christmas together. We went to church to ask for guide and protection during our visit in Dubai.
And the last and final week, we stayed in a hotel for days to relax ourselves. Then we went to the biggest mall in the world - the Dubai mall. We brought souvenirs and went shopping before going home and when it's time to leave. I felt sad and happy because I'm leaving the country while bringing home plenty of memories to keep and stories to tell. It is a fun experience that I will never forget to try it the next time I'm going to visit.

Beauty standards in the Philippines
In countries like the United states and European countries countless of people are tanning their skin color into brown but in some countries like the Philippines being brown is considered ugly and dirty since it isn't qualified in the beauty standard of the country. Having light skin color, pointed nose, and hourglass shaped body are on the examples of the beauty standards in the Philippines. In our country, entering the showbiz or modelling industry is hard because of the beauty standards but for morena Filipino to get in the industry is near to impossible chance. Since being light- skinned is one the beauty standards in the Philippines, people now are promoting skin bleaching for morenas.
But for some people like Nadine Lustre our skin color is something that we should accept or love because it is our natural color. Growing up, Nadine Lustre had insecurities like her body why her body doesn't have that much hips and her skin color.
"I remember before pag pupunta ako ng vtr's- mga tv commercials- we would line up para matawag for the vtr and then lahat ng katabi ko is all mestiza and then pumasok sa isip ko na laging naapprove for tv commercials is all mestiza and there was a point in my life na sana mestiza na lang ako so I can get projects" She stated on her interview in tonight with boy Abunda.
Despite the beauty standards in our country Nadine Lustre decided to embrace her skin color and body to let go to all the negativities.
"I realized that I'm unique and no one else is like what I have" she added.
Being one of the popular and influential women in the country, Nadine sets a beauty standard to embrace our skin color and be proud of it. And now up to this day. There are now countless of Filipinos that are starting to embrace themselves, be confident on their skin color and there are also Filipinos who advocates being morena as part of the beauty standard here in the Philippines.

Miriam Defensor: The iron lady of Asia
Long before she was named by an Australian magazine in 1997 as one of "the 100 most powerful women in the world" and known as the "Iron lady of Asia" or the "dragon lady" for her bold eloquence in leadership and writing. Miriam Defensor Santiago was raised in a strict and pressured household by her parents. She was taught by her mother to be domineering as she was the eldest or the first born child in the family.
"When she says scrub the floor, then it should be scrubbed - and if it isn't scrubbed, she will be the one punished because she's in charge of it” her mother recalls.
"If you can't make time for your studies, go to the forest and live with the animals" her mother added.
Miriam graduated as their class valedictorian in La Paz Elementary School and Iloilo Provincial National High School. She also aced the entrance exam at the University of the Philippines visayas, graduated with Latin awards, and was chief in editor. Miriam entered politics. She became great, extraordinary and outstanding judge, lawyer, and senate for a long time in the republic of the Philippines. She even became the first Filipino and first Asian to be elected as the judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) located in Netherlands but due to her chronic fatigue her election has been void and despite being a great politician, lawyer, and a leader -Miriam failed to win the presidential candidacy for 3 times and was cheated on her first presidential candidacy on 1992 by the retired general Fidel Ramos.
"I was cheated but I didn't call for people power" Miriam told to those who are not satisfied with the 2010 elections to refrain the protesters from getting hurt or killed.
"Cheer up, people! Ganyan lang talaga ang buhay. The night is darkest just before the sun rises" Miriam calls on her followers as she failed to win the presidential candidacy against our current president Rodrigo Duterte.
Though she didn't become our president, she was a remarkable and irreplaceable senator that our republic of the Philippines had.
"I lost the election but I won the love that is going to last" Miriam stated right after she lost the presidential election to Duterte and died in cancer months after the election.
She didn't become the president and is gone. She remains to be one of the remarkable senator that our government had.
