As Sebastian confesses that his nightmares are worse in some sense now that he has been reunited with his daughter and himself, Joseph's heart shatters all the more. He wants to tell him that nothing's going to tear them apart again and that he'll stay with him, even as he sleeps so if he wakes up from a nightmare, he'll be right there to talk him down from it.
He wants to be anything and everything Sebastian needs, but he knows it's selfish of himself to offer. Sebastian's lost so much, even after getting Lily back. In the process, he was reunited with his wife, the love of his life, only to watch her die so that he and their daughter could live.
How could Sebastian want someone like Joseph to share a bed with him when the person he's supposed to share it with perished in a beautiful, yet tragically sacrificial way?
As he attempts to find his words, Sebastian's already asking if he wants to step outside.
There's a kind smile that settles upon his lips as he offers a slight nod.
"Yeah, I could definitely use from fresh air," he agrees as he stands up and follows Sebastian closely to outside.
Joseph talks about cuts and dreams and Sebastian thinks, however briefly, that he wishes he had a bottle to drink out of. The errant desire makes him gulp down the rest of his water before swiftly refilling it once more, and while it doesn't hit the same, at least it staves off even a little bit of the itch.
"I, uh..." He shakes his head, both hands wrapping a little tighter around his glass. "I wish I could tell you all my dreams were great now. But I've been...
"They're not good." He chuckles, but the sound is more tired than happy. "Maybe worse. Actually having you and Lily back means the nightmares where I lose everything again feel more real when I wake up."
He almost brings something else up-- that lately he's been having what he assumes are dreams of Union, but not from his eyes. That sometimes he'll be a six year old girl going to school everyday, and that this six year old girl looks in the mirror feeling confused about why she's still so small. Sebastian knows from context clues that he must be Lily, but everything is so vivid when he's her that he can't help but wonder if it was real.
He stills his tongue, though. Joseph's going through enough, and he doesn't need the added burden of whatever's ailing Sebastian in what ought to be a happy ending.
His eyes flick back to Joseph's face. "...hey." Sebastian's thumb taps absently at the side of the glass. "You want to go outside?"

Leon's beyond grateful that Sebastian is as good of a guy as he is. Not many people would come to pick up a drunk like him, especially as early in the morning as it is.
Leaning his head against the window, he sighs in contentment as the coolness of the glass helps sober him up, even remotely.
Though, while the question's expected, he slouches a bit when Sebastian asks what happened. It's something he knows he needs to fess up to, and if not to Sebastian, then who?
"I saw my ex."
It takes a moment for him to find the words to continue, but eventually, he manages.
"I, uh... I hadn't seen her since the night she broke up with me. It was the day before I had started my new job as a cop in Raccoon City. When she had broken up with me... fuck, it destroyed me. I'd never gotten so drunk before in my life, but I drank so much that I overslept and everything.
"And as terrible as it sounds.... it ended up saving my life. Raccoon City went to shit that day, and it was the reason I ended up in the line of work I do. She has a family now, two kids and a husband. It'd been so long since I'd seen her, I figured I could at least go say hi...."
A long flow of air seeped through his nostrils.
"She both saved and destroyed my life in a single moment, took away the family I thought I'd have with her... and she didn't even remember me."
His voice began to get thick and his eyes began to water.
"I meant so little to her, she didn't remember my name."
Though the apology he expects doesn't come, Sebastian doesn't begrudge Leon his inability to voice it. If he had to count all the times he wallowed in his own shame after a night of drinking his thoughts away, he might just lose the ability to count altogether.
"Yeah, you can come over," he says. Ever consistent with his dry wit, however, he makes sure to add, "You look too much like shit for me to leave you alone with good conscience, anyway."
He's parked a little down the road, but he imagines the fresh air ought to do Leon's head some good. Once they get to his Wagoneer, Sebastian takes Leon to the passenger's seat, then goes to the other side to slip in, himself.
The drive after that is calm. Sebastian's got a Springsteen disc popped into his ancient car radio, passionately singing about how baby, we were born to run.
"You gonna tell me about what got you in that bar, Kennedy?" he starts, blunt as ever. "Or is that a morning after thing?"
At a red light, he turns his head some, glancing at the man at his side. "I don't mind when you tell me about it, or if you decide you don't want to tell me about it at all.
"But you gotta tell someone. Your sponsor, maybe."

There's a slight flush that rises to Joseph's cheeks as he ducks his head bashfully from Sebastian's intentional gaze. He knows there's been quite a lot of time that they've been separated, but even more that's transpired in that time. In some ways, he almost expected that they were strangers to each other once more, and yet, here they are, acting as if it'd only been days since they've last been united.
"Well, it's nice in the moment, but it cuts when I wake up," Joseph admits in a soft tone. "I guess I kind of wish that it was nightmares, or, better yet, nothing at all."
Truly, as nice as the dreams were, the thoughts of Sebastian loving him just as he loved Sebastian and the phantom feelings of their fingers intertwined, it hurt too much to wake up and remember that he's having these feelings for a man that not only was married for so long to the love of his life, but also a man who's never indicated attraction towards other men.
There's a sympathetic smile on his lips as he looks up to meet Sebastian's gaze once more.
"What do you dream about these days?"
"Mm." One of those "too good to be true, couldn't be real" scenarios, then. Sebastian's tone is tentative after that, but it's a clear attempt at teasing when he asks, "And... what, you had to get up to process it?"
Considering Sebastian got up just to drink water, though, he's in no position to judge anyone's reasons for forgoing sleep. He leans against the counter, sips from his water, and doesn't bother to hide the way he's watching Joseph all the while. Years of isolation following the Beacon Incident have made him terrible at speaking to people; that it's Joseph here, who he hadn't exactly left behind on the best terms, only makes him feel all the more inadequate.
Sometimes it's hard to believe that he's physically here. For years Sebastian's been haunted by him in his dreams: a nightmare-ish, violent version of his best friend, who'd grip him tight until he bled under his nails. The Joseph in his dreams berated him for leaving him, for not coming back for him, for not even having courage to think about him in the day... and the worst part of it all was that the vision of him was right about all of it.
Even now, Sebastian can't look at him without feeling a mix of guilt, of longing, of shame. I should've been the one to save you. I should've recognised how much you cared. I shouldn't have taken you for granted.
"...that's good, though." He chuckles. "After everything that's happened, I'm glad one of us can have a nice dream."

Sebastian asks him if it's nice or not nice enough, and truthfully, Joseph isn't so sure he can answer it. For himself, it's one of the nicest dreams he's had in a long time. It was the hope and, essentially, delusion that got him through the roughest points of his time in STEM.
But the dream means Sebastian has lost almost everything that he held dear to him.
When Joseph had been stabilized enough, Kidman told him everything that had transpired- that he was in another form of STEM, that Myra and Lily were alive this whole time, that Myra died so Sebastian and Lily could get out, what Mobius was and what had become of it, everything.
How exactly does Joseph explain to Sebastian that his dream was nice because he dreamt that he and Sebastian finally had their happy ending when it's the most selfish thing he could dream up and could only become reality due to the tragedy of losing his wife once again?
So instead, he offers a small, almost somber smile and says, "Well, I'm sure it'll only ever be a dream, so it's as nice as it'll ever be."
Sebastian expects the worst seeing @lowerqualityrp sat at his kitchen table. He'd only gotten up to get water, suddenly feeling parched in the middle of the night, and his immediate reaction upon seeing Joseph up is the fear something had gone wrong.
He wouldn't have blamed him for it, considering. Kidman had showed up one day with Joseph in tow, saying she'd finally found him at an off-shoot facility from Mobius' main headquarters. Sebastian had asked for details and she told him he wouldn't like what he'd hear; after that, he didn't ask again.
"You... have a nightmare or something?" Sebastian tries asking as he walks in the room. He gets a glass like usual and fills it at the sink like usual, but all his senses are on Joseph and his answer--
❛ only thing i remember is that it was a nice dream. ❜ ( x )
...and hearing that makes Sebastian let out a breath he wasn't aware he was holding.
"First time I ever heard of a good dream getting someone out of bed," he says, but the slight curve of his lips gives his relief away. "Does that mean it was really nice, or not nice enough?"

"Only because there was a group of them," Leon mutters under his breath. He's angry for several reasons- the fact he relapsed, because he couldn't even relapse in peace, the fact that one of the few people in the world he didn't want to let down is picking him up, that people are disgusting pigs who pick on others for no fucking reason- but he knows it's better to not wallow in it, not while Sebastian's kind enough to pick him up.
So, the self-loathing dissipates for now, and the regret replaces it as he looks up towards the other as they leave the bar.
"It doesn't exactly great, but I've had worse, though. I'll be okay."
With a thick gulp, he looks down at the ground as they walk. Fortunately, it's a bit easier to do now that he's beginning to sober up, but it makes the shame sit heavier in his gut.
"I'm..."
The words are at the tip of his tongue.
I'm sorry you had to come get me. I'm sorry Lily's alone at home. I'm sorry I messed up.
But no matter how hard he tries, they're not coming out.
"Can I... Can I stay with you tonight? I don't want to be alone."
" i. . . i didn't mean to. . . " ( x )
Sebastian's inclined to believe him, in truth. Neither Beacon nor Union could compare to the difficulty of trying to stay away from the drink that used to be the only thing that could soothe him, and without Lily, Sebastian doubts he'd actually manage as well as he has been.
@lowerqualityrp doesn't have the privilege of a family to be better for. Honestly, Sebastian isn't even certain what he's been through since he started work for the federal government; he's never thought to ask, not when Leon came home so broken.
He sighs, reaching a hand out to where Leon lies on the floor. Just because he hadn't expected to be called to pick him up at a bar doesn't mean he'll just leave him there. And, with a low apology spoken to the bartender, he leads Leon back outside into the cool night air.
"They got you good, huh?" He's not talking about the alcohol Leon shouldn't have touched, choosing instead to acknowledge the blooming black eye and the bruising on his cheek. They can talk about Leon's sobriety-- or lack of thereof-- later. "Does it feel as bad as it looks?"

It's impossible not to melt into the delicate touch as Charles's deceivingly gentle fingers remove the strands from his features. As much as Drowsy wants more from the other, he knows he'll only get moments like this.
And, for now at least, it's all he needs.
"It's not without expectation," Drowsy admits in a hushed voice. Turning his face to look up at the other once more. "Though, it's an expectation that I'm more than certain won't pose a problem. My father expects that should you reveal anything, I bring it to him. I know you well enough to know that you'd never be so stupid as to reveal anything of import."
There's a soft glint in his eyes, admitting the I wouldn't be here if it meant you'd get hurt that he can't say out loud.
Charles opens his mouth, but thinks better of it as he takes in what he can see of Drowsy's expression. He's seen the man petulant and he's seen him unspeakably angry, but this is something else entirely.
The question he'd posed holds water, though, in that Charles isn't nearly as physically affectionate as Drowsy prefers (nothing he's said aloud, granted, but Charles isn't stupid). He's said many times that he can leave if he's dissatisfied with him-- what does it mean, then, that Drowsy never has?
The cigarette between his fingers is put out. Charles sighs, and uses his clean hand to brush Drowsy's fringe back from his forehead.
"Spending time with you like this is unprecedented in our world, that's all," he says. Truthful as always. "We aren't kids any more. And any hint of betrayal would...
"I don't know how it is with you, but Ba would have my head."

Drowsy can't help the slight huffed laugh that puffs out of his nostrils. "Would there be anything for him to know?" He all but bites back. Just getting time alone feels like pulling teeth, let alone getting any sort of genuine affection from the younger man.
His hand falls upon his chest as his head turns to stare at the wall opposite Charles, hoping the other doesn't notice the wounded turn of his expression.
"No. He doesn't about us." A beat. "I would never let him have that over you."
Drowsy nonchalantly takes the cigarette from the other and moves to lay his head on Charles's lap.
"Is that what you call this? Collecting intel?" he purrs as he stares at the glowing tip of the stick. "I know we might not have any labels or expectations, but I thought this was at least something more personable."
He takes one more drag from the cigarette, holding the smoke in his lungs as he offers it back before letting it out in a sigh.
"For the record, there is plenty that I do on my own. I may be a bastard, but there's a reason my father acknowledges me as his son. I'm quite capable of pulling my weight, you know."

@prebeat mistakenly said in a chat: drowsy doesnt wake up w charles at his bedside cos hes too busy but charles does arrive fifteen mins later breathless cos he ran thru the hospital
The world surrounding Drowsy is both blurry and blinding, and despite the strange numb sensation in his body, there is a visceral pain thrumming throughout his whole existence. He wants to scream as the agony begins to become more prominent, but the only sound that comes out is a pathetic whine.
The nurses come in and say something, but there's a high-pitched ringing in his ears that muffles the sounds of the world.
Eventually, whatever the hospital staff does to aid him helps him calm down, but he's clearly in no pleasant place. As he attempts to recall how he ended up in such a sorry state, bits and pieces begin to rise to the service until the flashes of Charles, masked fighters, Ka Spa, and an explosion become one cohesive memory.
And just like that, Drowsy's heart plummets as the realization that not only were most of his men brutally murdered, but so was his father.
He stares blankly at the ceiling above him, trying to figure out both how and why he's one of the only ones to make it out alive.
Did Charles even make it? He should be okay. He was far enough away. He has to be okay... right?

i'm stealing your "they were exes and charles' inability to be intimate had them breaking up" joke and making it a thing. i'm going to one-up it by saying that it was a forbidden, secret relationship kind of thing-- with maybe some childhood friendship having led up to it? drowsy would've been charles' first serious relationship and all.
i like the idea of, since their families are both societies, that they went to the same basic education together. and even if da sun and sleepy chan were bitter rivals, their sons going to the same school had them becoming friends despite it all.
in the present charles doesn't necessarily hate drowsy or anything. they're just "rivals" the same way kakashi and obito were rivals, and duty to his society requires him to be antagonistic towards him. but it's really not more than professional antagonism.
aaaaalso, i bolded toxic love because charles can't have any healthy relationships atm. drowsy's welcome to try and fix him though! he might actually have enough context to do it. LOL.

Outside, the typhoon rages on-- even in the confines of this little house in the suburbs, the chill of the wind and rain is unmistakable. It'll be a while until it passes.
"'In cases such as this'," he echoes, smoke drifting from between his lips with every word.
"Don't tell me you've never gone alone to get intel before."
Don't tell me you're talking about us and not work.

FORGED for a scene from my muse's past that they think made them stronger in the long run - for Sheva!
I think one of the most formative times in Sheva's life was when she managed to hide long enough/escape the massacre following the T-Virus outbreak in 1994, stemming from Umbrella No. 57 Plant. It certainly gave her a drive against Umbrella, and while she had always been strong and resilient, this incident absolutely was a factor into why Sheva joined the BSAA. This horrible tragedy set Sheva's life on a trajectory where she not only became physically stronger and faster, but she saw just how corrupt systems could be first hand. With this, she's actively trying to make the world a better and safer place for people who would otherwise be taken advantage of by those in power.

While he knows it's supposed to be a dig, Drowsy can't help the slight pang of sorrow in his chest as the other speaks of not needing permission or guards. Drowsy can't help but wonder if Charles will ever realize what he's had stolen from him by becoming not only the personal weapon of Big Sun, but the face of the organization.
He keeps his thoughts to himself, of course, knowing just as well that Charles wouldn't take too kindly to such an accusation.
"Only my father knows of my whereabouts in cases such as this. Fortunately, my father allows me to be open and honest with him about my private matters."
Hearing his given name makes Charles' stomach twist, and his lips press thinly together as he watches the cigarette light up with the smoke Drowsy pulls into his lungs.
"I'm the Red Pole's right hand," he says plainly. As he takes the cigarette back, their fingers brush together, but Charles' gaze refuses to leave Drowsy's own.
"There wouldn't be any speculation to begin with."
He taps excess ash into the tray, then takes his own breath of smoke to hold it in. Outside, the typhoon rages, water smashing into the windows and the winds continuing to howl.
"Unlike you, I can go where I please, do where I please. It's a real shame you always need permission to meet me without your guard."
