It hasn’t always been like that; and that’s what made it so hard.
So hard to – think. “Think, Katara, think,” she kept telling herself as she stared holes into the wall.
It felt as if there were two Kataras in her head: the real one, and one as imagined by Aang. And neither was able to fucking think.

For twelve years, they've been almost-lovers that met in the gloom of the palace now and again, making 'almost' be enough - until three years ago.
A Zutara story, surrounded by intense political drama and post-war struggles.

no because it actually is so funny how sokka is unrealistically smart like just. inhumanly intelligent so they had to counteract that by nerfing him in one million different ways. no he can’t bend no his sister never listens to him no he isn’t charismatic or convincing yes he has one million different mental illnesses. every single mental illness known to man, in fact. and that somehow balances out the fact that he is a genius the likes of which the world may see like. once in a century. because does it even matter if he just keeps taking L after L and is so fucking miserable and constantly self-sabotages due to being too insane and neurotic to even function half the time and his highest aspiration in life is literally to be murdered. no, seriously, does it??? incidentally, this it is also the central tension of a little show called . “malcolm in the mildle.”

ATLA Modern Setting Au with them playing Twister and Zuko accidentally saying something like "open your leg" or "come closer to me" or "yeah, just like this" to Katara meaning ways for her to touch the right circle and she absolutely thinking Hot Things® and losing because her legs couldn't hold her and Zuko being totally oblivious about it
100% would work the other way too, Zuko is a dork who absolutely would get flustered hearing things while they are so close together

“When I am lonely,” Zuko said, “I sometimes just hold a flame in my palm.” He made a small ball of fire appear. “It is warm, and alive, and flutters like a little heart, and it gives me solace. When I am afraid, I feel the presence of every candle flame, every lick of fire around me, and I feel protected by them. I feel fire just beneath my skin, crackling with life, and it gives me courage. I can’t imagine a world without it. He’s been living it for twelve years. It is no wonder that he is losing his mind.” He pulled his palm into a fist, making the little flame disappear. “You want to defend Aang, I get it. You are in a relationship; that’s what you are supposed to do when you are together. But… if you put that aside… what would you have done in Aang’s place?”
Post-canon Zutara slow-burn 12 years after the finale. Some unforeseen events bring Katara and Zuko closer together again, and amidst hope, fear and grief they are forced to reflect on the last 12 years of their relationship.
