Hi all, I realize that it's very early days for Apple Silicon. However, I've followed the recommendations for using the Miniforge version of Conda, and while I'm able to install Jupyter, start a notebook server, and open a new notebook I. 🛠️Set up our environment - Create a Jupyter Notebook

To set up your environment, you can either use a combination of WSL and VS Code, or Windows 10 with VS Code. I am using the former - Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on Windows plus VS Code. Read this guide why I use WSL.

We will set up our Jupyter environment by creating a new Jupyter Notebook. If you have followed my WSL guide, you would have seen Ubuntu terminal by now. Let us create a Jupyter notebook. Open VS Code integrated terminal. Here is the quickest way to open VS Code integrated terminal inside Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). This will automatically open the Remote WSL. The view should look like this:

Now, press CNTRL+SHIFT+P button simultaneously using your keyboard. This will bring up a dropdown view in the VS Code Editor view. Enter Python: Create New Blank Jupyter Notebook and select it from the dropdown. Clicking on it should load Python extension if not loaded before.

Once connected, the first view should look like this:

The top right of the VS Code UI says 'Jupyter server: Not started'. This means Jupyter library is currently not installed inside WSL. You will also get two pops, one of which says, 'Data science libraries notebook and jupyter not installed'. Click on 'Install'. It will install Jupyter. Let it first install automatically.

Next, click on 'Yes' prompt where it says 'Data Science library ipykernel is not installed. Install?'.

One thing is to note that, you may see a pop up saying 'Error: 'Kernelspec' module not installed in the selected interpreter ((0)). Please re-install or update 'jupyter' '.

Many people have reported this. Here is a fix taken from official VS Code Python extension. In the integrated VS Code terminal, run both the commands one by one:

python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip

python3 -m pip install jupyter

Restart VS Code editor, and you should not see the pop up now. Let me know in the comments if the issue still persists. We will fix it together.

Congrats! You have set up the Jupyter library in VS Code inside the Windows Subsystem for Linux. I have written something in my Note. The final view should look like this.

⚙️ Work with code cells in the Notebook Editor

In the view, you should see M with a down arrow. Just below this, you will find cells to type in your code. Copy and paste these lines:

print(hello)

To run this code, click on the green run icon next to the cell. This will run the code cell.

The output of the code cell will appear just below the code cell.

Now, we will save our Jupyter notebook in our desired directory. I will save it in 'hello_python' folder. Press CNTRL+S button simultaneously using your keyboard.

Note the format of the file once you save it, it will be .ipynb format.

Save the .ipynb file as python script. Click on the 'convert and save to a Python script' option located at the top of the Editor view.

Once you click on the 'convert and save to a Python script', VS code editor will open up a new file. Here is the view of the Untitled-1 file. The format of the file is .py

Save this file and rename it whatever you like it to. Make sure the file extension is .py. My file name is PythonScript. Click on OK.

Once you rename the file, the view will look like this:

You will get three options in this view - Run Cell, Run Above, and Debug Cell. Click on the options to see the results.

Now, in the Python extension's settings, we need to tick the Data Science: Debug Just My Code option. To do this, press CTRL+, button simultaneously using your keyboard. This will open up the Settings box. In the search box, paste this: Data Science: Debug Just My Code. Select this Option. Since I am using Windows Subsystem for Linux environment, I have first clicked on Remote (WSL:Ubuntu-18.04) and then checked the Debug Just My Code.

Now, close the Settings option. Let us get the Ipython Interactive view. In the file PythonScript.py file, click on any cell and press SHIFT+Enter keyboard button. This command opens up the Python Interactive window with the output of the code cell you just ran. It will have three sections: Python Script file code view, IPython Interactive, and a Console to run command.

Click on any code cell in the PythonScript window and press SHIFT+Enter keyboard button to get the output in the IPython Interactive window.

One of the key features of the IPython Interactive is the Console window in which you can run any code and get the output of that single code. Just enter your code and press SHIFT+Enter keyboard button.

The quickest method for trying the Jupyter Notebook is by going to http://try.jupyter.org . This connects to a notebook out in the internet. The files do not exist on your computer, they’re on some random computer you don’t have control of. If you close the window, the files go away. It is meant as a temporary space to try out the notebook for yourself. If you click “New” at the upper-right and select “Python 2” it will create a new notebook. When you’re done, you can click File-> Download As -> IPython Notebook (.ipynb) to save it to your computer.

To actually install Python on your own computer, follow the instructions below. This is not the only one, but it’s the easiest one that I have found.

Install the Anaconda Python Distribution

Which one? 2.7 or 3.5? For now, do 2.7.

Windows: 64 bit or 32 bit? 64 bit (unless you try to install and it says it can’t)

Open Jupyter Notebook

Simple, but rigid method:

Windows: There will be a folder called “Anaconda2” under the start menu. Inside of that will be a shortcut called “Jupyter Notebook”

Mac: It should create a shortcut on your desktop called “Launcher”. Open that, and inside will be a shortcut to the Jupyter Notebook

Jupyter Notebook will open in your home folder. (C:Users<username> on Windows, /Users/<username> on Mac). You will have to save your notebook files there.

Slightly harder, but more flexible method:

Windows

Open Windows PowerShell (click on the Start Menu and search for “PowerShell”)

In PowerShell, type “cd ” (without the quotes)

Type the folder where your .ipynb files live (or where you want to create them). If you’re connected to the network drive, it would be R:Psy407_9Student_Data<yourduckid>, hit ENTER

Hint: if you start typing the path, you can hit the TAB key, and it will finish typing it for you!

Type “jupyter notebook” (without the quotes) and hit ENTER

Mac

Open the Terminal (click on the magnifying glass at the upper-right, search for “Terminal”, OR open Finder and go to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

In the terminal type “cd ” (without the quotes)

Type the folder where your .ipynb files to live. If you’re connected to the class drive, it would be: /Volumes/Psy407_9/Student_Data/<yourduckid>, hit ENTER

Hint: if you start typing the path, you can hit the TAB key, and it will finish typing it for you!

Type “jupyter notebook” (without the quotes) and hit ENTER

Create a new notebook

From the home page, click “New” at the upper-right, and select “Python 2”

Install packages

Anaconda comes with many useful packages for Python that allow it to do other stuff. BUT, it doesn’t come with everything. You will have to install some of the packages yourself (this is already done for you in class)

One of the packages is called “nibabel” for dealing with MRI data (http://nipy.org/nibabel/)

To install Python packages, we use a command-line tool called “pip”. Here’s how you use it:

Windows: Open PowerShell

Mac: Open Terminal

type “pip install nibabel” (without the quotes) and hit ENTER

It will display all kinds of fancy stuff on the screen. You can ignore most of it. Wait until it says “nibabel installed successfully”

After you install it, in your notebook, try to run this bit of code: “import nibabel” (without the quotes)

If you didn’t get an error, then it worked!

How to add and create stationery in Outlook?

A plain email message might be ignored, or make recipients hard to read in detail. Adding stationery will make your email message interesting and attractive. And here are some tricks to create custom stationery, and add / apply stationery in either all email messages or a single one easily.

Create new stationery for email messages

There is a stationery library in Outlook for your applying. However, you may not find out a fit one for your email message in some cases. And here we will show you how to create custom stationery in Microsoft Outlook.

Step 1: Create a new email message, and configure its formats.

Step 3: Insert cursor to email textbox editor, then press Ctrl-V (or Command-V if you're using Mac) - Make sure you enable WYSIWYG/Rich text format editor.

Step 2: Click the File > Save As.

Step 3: The Save As dialog box comes out, copy and paste the %appdata%microsoftstationeryin the address box, and press the Enter key. See the screen shot:

Step 4: Type a stationery name in the File name: box.

Step 5: In the drop down list of Save as type:, select the HTML (*.htm; *html).

Step 6: Click the Save button.

Close the message window. And stationery with the formats style that you configured in Step 1 has been created and saved. The new stationery is added into the stationery library, and you can apply it later.

Add and apply stationery for all email messages

This section is about how to add or apply stationery for all email messages, including all new email messages, replying messages, and formatting messages.

Step 1: Open the Outlook Options dialog box:

In Outlook 2010 / 2013, click the File > Options;

In Outlook 2007, click the Tools > Options.

Step 2: Click the Stationery and Fonts button.

In Outlook 2010 / 2013, click the Mail button in the left bar, and the Stationery and Fonts button stays in the Compose messages section.

In Outlook 2007, the Stationery and Fonts button is placed in the Stationery and Fonts section under the Mail Format tab.

Step 3: In the Signatures and Stationery dialog box, please select theme and font by clicking the Theme button and Font buttons.

Note: In the Theme or stationery for new HTML e-mail message section, if you select a theme, and select the Use theme’s font in the font box, the Font button in New mail message section is gray and invalid. So does the Font button in the Replying and forwarding messages section.

Step 4: Click OK button.

After you finish the setting, the selected stationery will be added and applied to all new email messages, replying messages, and forwarding messages.

Add and apply stationery for one email message

Occasionally, you may want to apply stationery for just one special message. And you can do it as following:

First of all, make sure the main outlook interface is in the Mail view. It will shift to the mail view by clicking the Mail button in the Navigation pane.

Step 1: Click the Home > New Items > E-mail Message Using > More Stationery in Outlook 2010 / 2013.

If you are using the Outlook 2007, please click the Actions > New Mail Message Using > More Stationery.

Step 2: In the Theme or Stationery dialog box, select stationery from the Choose a Theme: box, and click OK.

Step 3: A new message window opens, and selected stationery is applied in it. Just compose your email message and send it.
