i'm actually very okay with "there was no other way this could end" endings. if they gotta die, let them die. if they gotta break up or go the wrong way or lose something important, let'em. so long as it completes the story. only thing i dislike more than a forced happy ending is a forced bad ending

Legend of Korra S3 thoughts
I literally just finished it but god it was good.
Spoilers ahead for s3

I heard this was the best season and heard about some of the stuff that happened but it was still a really good time. I went in semi-blind. I knew about certain things but not everything so I think that made it better.
I feel like this season learned from the last 2. A lot of the problems I had with the first two seasons was the pacing. S1 and s2 had a lot of issues with not giving us time to get to know the world and the characters. And also with s2 pivoting to a whole new plot.
I think the fact the season builds itself off of the previous 2 seasons also makes it stronger. It feels like the jumbled pieces of s1 and s2 came together really nicely in this season.
The bulls up to zaheer and the red lotus was really good. All the elements came together and that scene where they have korra is so intense. Like I know korra is going to get out but you feel the weight and tension since they are able to balance it with the other elements of the story.
I like that it also ties into korras fears and anxieties while also tying it to her arc through the previous seasons is so good. The fact the the main antagonist appear in her hallucinations as manifestations of her anxiety about the world not needing her is good. It gives them more weight as they were able to build on the arc of korra finding her place as the avatar in a more complicated world with more advanced people and problems.
Also I think the fact that the read lotus’ plan was hinted at and how korra would end up by the end of the season through the paralytic dart is so good.
I think the ending is so crushing since we see korra struggle with her purpose as the avatar. We see her needing guidance and not being able to get it bcuz of her severed connection. We see how she’s matured but still has that action first think later mentality. And it all culminating in her feeling like she’s lost her place even more as ppl step up to in her mind take her place.
I’m also really glad we got to see the other kingdoms. We got to see how shitty the queen is and how shitty the president of republic city is. Bcuz that puts in your mind that maybe zaheer has a point in a way but the way he’s going about it will make the world a worse place.
I like how calm and patient zaheer is. The way he’s able to mobilize his team and move them into the places they need to be to move forward with his plan. Like the way he sits and talks contrasts with korra and the way he gets to far in his plsn as you see it play out is really good.
The only critique I have is that the other members of the red lotus don’t have much character really. I do like them and their bending styles are really cool. But I think as a whole they feel more like an extension of zaheer which works in a way. I guess with p’li who was supposed to be zaheer s lover and his only attachment. I didn’t really feel like that. They had a few scenes and that’s it’s. Not bad but kinda meh I guesss.
On the plus side we did get more with the main cast. I feel like I’m actually getting to know them as characters. I’m especially glad we got to see more asami. She was always sorta there but she feels more apart of the team and I’m glad we got more interaction with her and the other characters.
I’m glad that they were able to balance episodes focusing on the characters and actually building an arc for them and the main plot. They feel more like character with actual relationships rather than like kinda friendly coworkers. I think them stopping with the dumb love triangle helps especially since korra and mako and asami and mako had no chemistry lol.
Overall this season was really good. I feel like with this season they found their footing with the formatting of korra.
Excited for the next season even if it’s not as good.
Would rate s3 a 9/10

Legend of Korra S2 thoughts
Literally just finished s2 and wanted to jot down my thoughts here real quick.
Spoilers for season 2

So I didn’t hate s2. Weirdly I liked it a little better than s1, but I do have issues with it.
Honestly I thought it was pretty good in the first half. The build up to the civil war was a bit fast, but I thought it was interesting. I think the way Unalaq manipulates by using spirituality is pretty interesting. It’s very similar to the way colonizers used christianity to further control and colonize native lands.
I thought Korea’s arc of having to figure out her role in this conflict was interesting too. I think the season long arc of korra finding her place in conflict as the avatar especially as someone who is more used to using force than diplomatic skills is good especially since it parallels aang who did everything more diplomatically. I think the way unalaq also knew how to manipulate that was also good.
I feel like I’m this season we were able to get more of a feel for the characters than in the previous season. There’s still some characters who you don’t really get to know or who are kinda there (asami hopefully we get a character arc and more interactions with her >_<)
I also really like varrick. The way he plays the bumbling idiot but actually plays that to his advantage is so interesting. He is able to take advantage of a situation because he has different cards to play depending on what pops up.
I really think it falls flat when they introduce raava and avatar wan. It kinda comes out of nowhere. Like they have the statue of wan but that’s really it. I think from there a lot of the more interesting aspects of the season get derailed.
Like it takes the building tension we had from finding out varrick was double crossing everyone to benefit himself, from building tension between the north and south, from korra trying to help and being unsure to just the story of wan.
I don’t think the story with wan is bad. I liked it but it moved the story in a less interesting direction. Also it makes spirits less interesting in that they’re now divided into clean good and evil.
Personally I think the stuff with wan should have been it’s own separate short story if they wanted to have it but at that point it just gets thrown in and then mixed in kinda messily with the more interesting story.
I think the focus should have been on korras arc of “what is the role of the avatar in these more complex conflicts and by extension world?”
If they wanted to keep raava and vaatu in the story than rather it be an external conflict save the world type story than I feel like it should have been an internal turned external battle tied to korras arc.
The avatars were always a collective of people who worked hard to help the world in the ways that they could. Not always perfectly but they worked to make the world a better place. But in a sense they don’t have a purpose when there is no chaos in the world.
I feel like I’m wans story he should have fused with both raava and vaatu. It can represent the ways the avatar can both bring peace and chaos into the world. How in order for them to exist there needs to be chaos in the world so that they can bring peace. Rather than it being a more black and white, evil vs good it can be more complex.
Then the conflict can be korra not having a place and the world responding to her need for a place. Iroh says something along the lines of how korras emotions/energy can affect not only the spirit world but also the physical world. So it could be more the world responding for her need for a purpose that she could believe that only she can save the world on her own with force rather than solving it diplomatically or trying to maintain the peace that was already there.
If they wanna keep the big kaiju fight at the end then it could be more symbolic of even physical or the need for chaos and peace within korra fighting. I think that would also tie in more and actually show that raava and vaatu can’t really exist without the other rather than just saying it and never feeling like it’s true because vaatu is just evil.
I don’t know if any of that makes sense lol. Overall this season was ok. I’d give it a 5/10. Maybe it would be worse if I went in blind and had no idea about anything but cest la vie.

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

Legend of Korra S1 thoughts
So I literally just finished s1 of lok and wanted to like jot down my thoughts lol. This is just my current thoughts on s1 and idk how to feel about the entire series
Long post sorry
Spoilers for season 1

So I like it so far. I think it’s pretty interesting. Not the best season but I like it so far. I wish I went into it blind bcuz it might have been a little better but whatever.
The biggest critique I have of this season is the pacing or moreso how face paced it is. I feel like in alta we had episodes to get to know the characters and their relationships and the world while also building towards the plot. I know this series has less episodes per season than alta which is probably why the pacing feels off honestly.
I feel like I don’t really know much about republic city or any of the characters really. Like the characters have personality but I don’t really know their relationship with each other or any of their motivations or drives really. Things about them kinda get throw at you.
Like it doesn’t feel like any of them know each other since we don’t get a lot of time to see them interacting together outside of small moments. They don’t really feel like a team.
Also the romance is somehow worse than alta. Like the romance in alta was kinda meh not terrible but not for me, but here it feels sorta contrived. Like no one really has chemistry at all. A lot of the romance scenes between them feel sorta forced. Like it didn’t happen naturally. Also Mako is a little bit of a whore lol. Like he kinda sucks lol.
My conspiracy is that the writers knew ppl wanted zutara so they gave ppl korra x mako to make up for it. But that’s just a theory, a game theory.
I do like korra tho. I like how she is the opposite of aang and is trying to find out about the world and how to be the avatar. I like how she over compensates trying to be the avatar. I like that she does things with force and needs to learn to strategize.
I kinda wish her air bending had a better build up bcuz it sorta just happens. And a lot of her insecurities are just kinda sprung on you too. Also I kinda wish her losing her bending had more room to sit with you. I think it would give it more weight.
I also liked amon as an antagonist. I do think the equalists were interesting especially since exploring what it’s like to be a non bender in a more advanced bending world and how that disadvantages you is interesting. I do wish it had more room to build. Like I wish we could see how the equalist movement built over time. How non benders are disadvantaged. What it is actually like to be a non bender in their worlds society rather than hear ppl just talk about it. I think seeing korra actually see what it’s like would flesh her out more too.
Non benders in avatar are really cool. The way they developed their own fighting styles to go toe to toe to benders is really cool especially in a more technologically advanced setting.
The amon and counselor tarlock twist was alright. It kinda came out of nowhere. I kinda wish amon was just a non bender bcuz that would have been way more interesting and make him more intimidating. I also thought tarlock and amon were working together to systematically take power which would have been interesting to see but that wasn’t the case.
The ending scene with amon and tarlock was cool but kinda idk. Unsatisfying sorta? Like I don’t feel like we got enough time to really get a feel for their relationship. We kinda just hear about it then just see them interact in that final scene. I also feel like we don’t really get a real sense of amon’s goals too. Like just vaguely hear that it’s connected to Yakone. I think it would have been more interesting if he genuinely was an equalist.
I just wish we had an episodes to flesh out republic city and this new unfamiliar place. I wish we had episodes just focusing on the characters and their relationship with one another. Just an episode to breath and feel like we’re learning rather than having stuff be brought up. Just some episodes to breath and feel and learn about everything.
Overall, had a good time. Needs work. Would give it 6/10

I honestly and truly believe all good AUs should be a little “”””ooc”””” in the sense that good characterisation involves understanding that changes a characters backstory and circumstances will have an effect on how they respond to the world around them
Good characterisation isn’t about creating a perfect 1:1 canon replica it’s about understanding why a character is different in your work and about grounding the changes you do deliberately choose to make in canon character traits
