Cal Head Canons
A thousand and one (and a million more) thank-yous to @waterdeeply for our feral conversations about Cal. This list would not exist without her!!

Prior to Elturel’s Descent, Cal ran deliveries for a general goods shop. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to necessarily do for a living, but was happy so long as his family had a roof over their heads and food on the table.
His favorite place in Elturel was The Garden—a large park/wooded area that ran through the center of the city. He managed to harvest some of the seeds from the place with the intention of growing them in the garden that he and his mother tended.
When Elturel descended into Avernus, Cal didn’t subscribe to the idea of everyone fending for themselves. He and Lia wanted to help protect their neighbors who couldn’t defend themselves. This led to disagreements with Rolan, and those arguments definitely carried over into the events of BG3. While the player character saw one such disagreement, it is actually a regular point of contention for the three.
However, because he and Lia wanted to help people (and Rolan came along to keep them safe), there did come a point where Cal was almost killed by the Companion’s lightning strike. He was pushed out of the way in time, but the smell of electricity makes him feel sick to his stomach now.
Avernus stinks of sulfur too, so that smell also makes him sick now.
Is terrified of the undead after seeing them skulk the streets of Elturel.
He didn’t have any weapons training prior to Elturel’s descent—he learned out of necessity.
Prior to the Descent, he loved stories about valiant warriors protecting those in need and where everything is set to rights and everyone lives happily ever after. Afterwards, he becomes embittered to those stories, because when all was said and done and Elturel was restored to the material plane, the tieflings were exiled. He knew that the world was cruel and unfair, but those tales almost seemed like a mockery of what he and his family went through.
Should the player character choose to help the tiefling refugees, Cal begins to think that there was a small grain of truth to those tales.
He would rather talk things over than resort to violence.
Most of the tiefling children view him as an older brother.
Though the ones who run with Mol might think he is a little gullible (though his heart is in the right place, and only they are allowed to mess with him).
After being imprisoned in Moonrise Tower’s dungeon, he hates cellars and prefers to stay in rooms/buildings with windows that look outside.
While most people don't enjoy the smell of rotting meat, being so close to decomposing bodies while imprisoned in Moonrise makes it so Cal genuinely cannot be near decomposing meat/rot without getting physically ill.
He is clumsy and will knock things over if he doesn’t pay attention/gets too excited.
After so many nights of sleeping in tents and near his siblings and the other Elturelian refugees, the first night in the tower, alone in his own room, is disquieting. He hasn’t slept in total silence for months, and most certainly not without one of his siblings in arm’s reach.
Most people who grew up in Elturel are described as “having been raised in a saddle,” which leads me to think that Cal knows how to ride a horse very well and likely helped care for the animals that the refugees took with them when they left the city.
Definitely tried to pick up the owlbear cub during the tiefling party. He did not succeed. If anything, he might have thrown out his back.
Is a giggly, affectionate drunk
He would find a job in the Gate that involves helping people. That might be apprenticing at Bonecloaks’ or running relief efforts.
I think he does most of the patching up/first aid for his siblings
Beer/ale drinker over wine
Prefers hearty meals with potatoes
Loves growing flowers and vegetables
The sort of person who will carry all of the groceries/shopping bags.
Romantic
It is VERY obvious that he has a crush. He wears his heart on his sleeve and wants to be as genuine as possible with you.
If he develops feelings for you, he goes out of his way to do small favors/help you where he can. This is anything from helping you carry packages to making sure that you eat.
On the topic of food: he loves cooking for you. It is one of his favorite ways to show his affection, especially after Avernus made everything edible go bad--cooking something delicious now holds new meaning and a significant amount of value to him.
He is the type to become a flustered/stuttering/tripping-over-himself mess whenever he is around you but hasn't yet confessed his feelings. He was clumsy before, but now he is practically falling over himself.
Rolan and Lia do tease him. Relentlessly.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Rolan would watch an interaction between you and Cal, watch Cal laugh/flounder/fall over himself, and then, once you had left, he would look at him and say, "Performance issues, Cal?"
He is the partner who will brag about you to anyone who listens. Will look for excuses to talk about you.
It's because he likes bragging about you that, if you were trying to keep your relationship on the DL (for whatever reason), he would immediately give the two of you away. Rolan and Lia would notice that he seems to be talking about you an awful lot more than before, and he is daydreaming A LOT.
Also the kind of partner who is content to listen to you talk about anything and everything.
The way to his heart is to also give him the space to talk when he needs to. Like other head canon posts have noted, Cal has been the mediator for his siblings for a very long time, so having the chance to express his thoughts/feelings is something he genuinely appreciates.
While in a relationship, he dotes. So much.
Makes small noises when he kisses you.
Super affectionate and will hold hands in any setting.
Looks for any excuse to be physically affectionate.
Big spoon who cuddles relentlessly.
He's VERY ticklish. Like, he probably enjoys being kissed on the neck, but he will start to laugh and squirm. His sides are definitely ticklish, too.
Loves holding you while you're straddling his lap with your legs wrapped around his center. He'll just press his face into your neck and stay like that.
This isn't to say that he doesn't tease you. He'll tug on loose strands of hair coming off the top of your head (closer to your hair part) while you're focusing on a task.
If you're holding food in your hand (think street food), if you look away, he will take a bite when you're distracted.
Also the partner who will come up to hug you from behind.

Yesterday was a little spicy so I needed a lost and sad Rolan as a palate cleanser.
Practicing speed painting, so I forced myself to only spend an hour on it. Honestly I'm struggling with my Minthara big paint, but I'm not giving up, I just need to not dwell on small detail rendering!

You’ve mentioned in a couple of posts that you headcanon Rolan as having depression/a panic disorder. What other headcanons about his mental health do you have?
Anon, I have so many yet so little thoughts about this very topic! I'll try to be as cohesive as I can because my mind can be pretty jumbled. Thank you for your patience!
Disclaimer: I am not a mental health professional! Just someone who also has mental health issues and can relate.
CW: Mentions of Self-harm (Scratching and picking)
Besides those two, I also believe he has a nightmare disorder! These are chronic, vivid nightmares that can either appear briefly or multiple times a night. They can be frightening, upsetting, and disturbing. Usually, his nightmares involve his mother Cal and Lia's mother, and after Lorroakan's abuse, start to involve him as well.
It absolutely does not help hat he usually remembers every detail as he sits there, heart pounding erratically and sweat soaking his night shirt. Sometimes they're so bad it sends him into a panic attack. In a weak attempt to stay grounded, he scratches at himself, sometimes bleeding since his nails are pretty sharp. He may end up vomiting as well depending of the contents of the dream. (Panic attacks can be extremely overwhelming for the body!)
He usually can't fall back asleep afterwards, so he'll work on a scroll, study the weave, or check inventory at Sorcerous Sundries depending on the time of night. Some nights he does nothing, just staring at the wall for hours while picking at his skin, especially around his nails.
When he has someone with him, it's easier to ground himself since they're quick to action when he can't function. Weighted blankets or his partner laying on top of him is great; even a crushing bear hug from Cal and Lia helps.
Before Tav, before a partner, right at the beginning of moving into the tower, he randomly got graphic nightmares of Cal and Lia dying. This made him scramble to their rooms to check on them and make sure they were still breathing, much to their sleepy confusion.
Things do get better with time! Natural medicine and breaking bad habits with the help of his family improve his way of living. While these issues may stick with him for the rest of his life, they become much more manageable with his support system.

Disclaimer: If you think differently than what I write here that is totally okay! These are just opinions!
First and foremost, I believe he's a switch! It can also depend on his partners preference, but he doesn't mind doing one or the other. I will say that he can have trouble bottoming/submitting super early on because it can be a very vulnerable experience, and he may get overwhelmed quickly. Will he admit that? Of course not, he's too prideful and his communication skills are horrid.
There's a lot of talk about with whether Rolan is a virgin or had a couple flings in the past during his time in Elturel, and I like either one! The most important thing is that he's definitely inexperienced. He doesn't know what he likes or dislikes yet, and would like to explore that with his partner once he's comfortable.
Bite him! Mark him! Give him hickies! Gods he goes absolutely insane for them, especially when he's on the receiving end. He would prefer all of it to be under the collar, but one of his favorite places is that tender spot right between the jaw and ear. It's one of the many ways to get him mewling. He'll definitely bite back if his partner likes it.
I would say he's pretty vanilla in general, but is open to trying something new if his partner is kinkier. It's something he would have to work up to as it can be intimidating, but with enough reassurances he's willing to try anything once. Besides, if he doesn't like it, he's pretty vocal about it and they know not to try again.
He wouldn't like being heavily restrained or gagged (at least at the same time), it feels too demeaning for him. I think he would like the idea of him being blindfolded, but would request that his partner keeps a hand on him at all times so he knows that they're still there. This would be a once in a while type of deal as it can get overwhelming quickly.
Speaking of dislikes: deliberate pain is a turnoff. Anything that would intentionally hurt he's not into. So things like whipping, harsh choking, smacking around, or any kind of pain infliction, he can't do it whether it's giving or receiving. (But he would still be into marking like I said earlier!) I don't think he would outright dislike degradation but those kinds of nights are on the rare side.
Now for the likes: Praise!!! For the love of the gods, praise this man, he loves it and his cock throbs when he's receiving it. It's the best way to get him worked up as well. Ordering him around is also good, he's very obedient and an incredible listener.
The act of intimacy is private for him, so public sex is definitely a big no. He wants everything to be private and only with his partner. He doesn't want to be anxious about getting caught while in the middle of things, it ruins his mood. Besides, his partner wants to keep his whines, moans, whimpers, and begging to themselves. He tends to feel guilty whenever he's not in the mood or has to stop anything they're doing, it's instinctive and frustrates him. He knows he has no reason to feel guilty, his partner reassures that all the time, but sometimes that guilt crawls into the back of his mind. His depression and panic disorder cause him to have low libido, so he's not in the mood for intimacy most days. Though he's still just as satisfied with purely focusing on his partner and not himself. (When he works on himself and finds solutions to help him with his mental health, his libido increases!)
King of Oral Sex. After learning about his partner's body and practicing for a few sessions, he's incredible at it. It ends up being one of his favorite things to do, some nights he evens pleads for it, begging to taste them.
The best way his partner will find out he's horny is the way the base of his tail arches upward. That tail has a mind of its own, and he can't quite control it. He uses his tail a lot, using to either hold their thighs apart or wrap around their torso desperately. (Or if his partner is a tiefling/dragonborn, wrap around their tail!)
His more sensitive areas besides his neck are the insides of thighs and his pelvic area. If you play with his chest enough though, that becomes sensitive as well.
He definitely starts bringing in magic bedroom as soon as he gets comfortable. Imagine what they could do with some of these spells! Mage hand (or multiple of them), disguise self, entangle, maybe fly as well...ah, telekinesis is also a good one! How about enhance ability? If either him or his partner can't use words, they'll both gently cast detect thoughts to check in.
Aftercare is extremely important to him, whether he's giving or receiving it. He and his partner switch depending on who wants to do it that night. Though being on the receiving end of it, it makes him feel so loved. It won't take long for him to start purring, falling asleep in their arms. When it's his turn, he takes his time and is incredibly tender. He'll get anything they ask for and more.
