"I am Yaegir, the guardian of the sea, the Harbinger of Storms. Though I am gentle as the ocean currents, I can and will bring total nihility to those who dare threaten the ocean realm." -"I am Yaegir, the mother of all those who live(and breed) in the sea. And here, I am awaiting the arrival of my child, whom I will entrust my reign to when i shall pass." "I am Yaegir, the great Dragon who does not require sacrifices to be appeased. Though I am taller than the mightiest waves and can easily place Washington underwater, I don't get so furious easily and can easily be placated with light novels and sake."

Xenophyophore mermaids are bizarre creatures PAR EXCELLENCE. What may appear as lumps of ill-defined flesh with biolumeniscent eyes are in fact, single-celled entities, clearly visible to the casual observer. Xenophyophore mermaids are, by design, simple. Usually reproducing by division, occasionally they may congregate together to form mobile families of a sort, constantly exchanging genetic material. Clearly being giant cells, xenophyophore mermaids are quite fragile and often construct a crude skeleton out of discarded debris for protection and more efficient mobility. This particular xenophyophore colony has inhabited a torn up Tesla-Chan robot with a added boat propeller. When interacting with xenophyophore mermaids, they're quite ambivalent. Not complex enough to show any higher emotions, these giant cells' general demeanor is to accept with indifference the limitations imposed upon them by more complex, multicellular organisms.

Goblin shark mermaids are elusive mermaids whose biology is little known about other than the occasional individual caught as bycatch(then later dumped back into the sea because of their personality is as ghoulish as their appearance). What is known however is that goblin shark mermaids can protrude and disclocate their jaws to snap up smaller mermaids in the abyss. It is said that goblin shark mermaids turn the souls of whom they've eaten into their personal ghost servants, but no one has yet to affirm this. Little is known about goblin shark mermaids' pregnancy habits either but from what little evidence we can gather, it seems that goblin shark mermaids enjoy growing their children inside their wombs, but quickly lose interest once they are born.

Larvacean mermaids are the most vertebrate of invertebrates...or is it invertebrate of vertebrates? Whatever the case, larvacean mermaids are odd because the real creature you see here is the tadpole-like individual snug comfortably inside a transparent "mother." The "mother" provides food and shelter just like any other during the prenatal period; it just so happens to specialize in food gathering. The outer body, the "torso," filters out larger particles so the smaller bits fall down to the "womb" where the larvacean can feed . The larvacean mermaid also breeds inside the "womb", should things get overcrowded with numerous tadpoles, they just burst free from their abode and and swim off so they can construct new "mothers" of their own. Larvacean mermaids are a strange yet overlooked creature of benefit because their discarded homes provide valuable meals to other deep-sea folk like giant isopods.

Giant isopod-mermaids are crustaceanoids who live on the bottom of great depths beyond the reach of sunlight. With food being so scarce, giant isopod-mermaids can go by with little to eat...until a dead mermaid from the sunlit waters falls below. Similarly, baby isopod-mermaids are a delicacy for other creatures in the deep sea, so their parents churn out hundreds to compensate for the predation, despite isopod-mermaids' hard shells and ability to roll into a ball. Human observers have considered giant isopod-mermaids quite cute-precisely because of their unusual mask-like face and their relationship to terrestrial pillbug-folk. Overall, giant isopod-mermaids are vital undertakers in the deep ocean, consuming carcasses and recycling nutrients back into the back to the surface, effectively feeding coral reef biomes above. See? Death isn't purely the end, it feeds new life.

Not angel, ANGLER. Anglerfish mermaids are fearsome residents of the dark depths inspiring the fear of both seafolk and humans alike. They say you should fear darkness, but in the sea...you should fear the LIGHT. This anglerfish mermaids belly isn't just swollen from her latest meal(these abyssal merfolk can swallow mermaids as large as they are), she is carrying a massive egg mass that she will later spew out which will later float to the surface above. In terms of personality, anglerfish mermaids are quite charming and devoted, loving a good dating session...as long as you consent with melting unto her body and devolving into little more than a pair of male gonads.

Sea angel mermaids are enigmatic molluskfolk that inhabit darker, colder depths of the ocean. Small in stature, they are surprisingly frightening when they unleash their inner mouth tentacles to eat, but luckily sea angel mermaids just eat pteropod-mermaids, or "flying snails". Oh? Those orange snail-like creatures in the corner? Those are actually baby sea angel-mermaids. Born with shells, sea angel-mermaids cast them aside when they grow into adults. The parents obviously don't eat their own children, though mothers will explode when giving birth.

Humpback whale-mermaids are known for their haunting songs and impressive fins on a equally impressive body. Their songs are so acute that mothers can sing directly to their unborn calves in the womb. Reaching the end of her one year pregnancy, this humpback whale-mermaid named Rorqa is feeling contractions, and Miss Mutilator is here to cheer her on(and also for size perspective; the average adult human would be about as tall as Mutilator's humanoid upper body.) Breastfeeding does represent a problems when you live a completely oceanic existence but luckily the milk produced by cetaceanfolks' generous breasts are as thick as ice cream...and while ice cream made from whale mermaids' milk never melts , most people cannot swallow it.

Great white shark-mermaids are among the most feared creatures in the sea, despite the fact that these undoubtedly powerful merfolk rarely dismember sailors and divers.
Of course, great white shark-mermaids won't hesitate to put up a fight if brought unto a ship's deck. Because of the number of both humans and shark-merfolk who lost appendages were astronomical, laws were enforced to protect both parties.
Luckily, great white shark-mermaids are making a comeback, as evidenced by Miss Mutilator here awaiting any day now for the arrival of her first child.

Common dolphin-mermaids are cetacean-folk that are more mammal than fish, and live in pods surfing on the waves, leading complex social lives. MOST dolphin-mermaids are ambivalently friendly to humans, but one individual, named Wily, was kidnapped from her pod by Paul Cuckfarro, and to survive the cruelty and neglect inflicted upon her, went insane and killed off the humans who treated her so poorly. Though Wily has since escaped back into the open sea and became an advocate for CACF(Cruelty Against Cetacean-Folk), and is currently expecting a calf, interaction with her is unpredictable as she doesn't always participate in "catch-and-release".

Sardine mermaids are a common food source for many merfolk, as well as avians and humans. For defense, they cluster into one big ball to resemble a larger...banquet. Actually, yeah, their real protection against predators is to stain the entire ocean white with their eggs.

Gelatinous merfolk who drift in the ocean, spotted jellyfish-mermaids have simple bodies with simple personalities to match. What appears to be arms are also polyps that spew out mucus-enclosed...well. Okay, what appears to be Life-Containment-Liquid really does contain planulae. Scientists suspect that from these planula larvae that all other creatures developed from these simple blobs, making jellyfish-mermaids the progenitor of more complex species, from arthropods to piscines to us.

Reptilians that sail the open ocean, but every year or so return to the same exact beach they were born in to lay their own eggs. As seen here, a leatherback-turtle mermaid greets a salmon friend returning from spawning herself. Everyone knows reptilians are ectothermic (cold-blooded), unable to process their own body temperature. But it seems that despite a diet of almost exclusively jellyfish-mermaids, leatherback turtles can withstand colder environments that would turn other turtles into popsicles. And unlike other turtles, the shell of the leatherback turtle-mermaid isn't as bony, thus making her egg-filled womb much more obvious. Nomadic travelers, they are quite amiable to divers and other creatures, though they do wish beachgoers wouldn't disturb their egg laying. *It's time to head into the open sea. Waving goodbye to your friends in the shallows, you journey into depths and dangers unknown.

-Defenders of the reef ecosystem. Tiger shark-mermaids are as bold and powerful as their terrestrial namesakes, and are versatile in their tactics. Patrolling in open water? No problem. Playing with the local juvenile-mermaids? You got it! While tiger-shark mermaids do have a reputation for eating nearly just about any appropriately-sized prey, they rarely attack human swimmers and may, in fact, rescue drowning human children and guide them back to shore. Compared to other mermaids we've encountered thus far, like the sewer penguins from inland water facilities, tiger-shark mermaids give birth to twins at most. Yet those babies are large enough to hold their own against most reef-predators. Their signature stripes help too.
