Now that Gorillaz is kinda playing with the whole "Murdoc feels sad the band might not need him anymore" thing, previous lore might actually have meaning. As far back as Strobelite maybe Murdoc let himself get sent to prison after seeing Noodle and 2D bonding. He started the whole #freemurdoc thing to see if fans still wanted him. Of course he would never just desert the band, so he sent Ace and we got the Now Now and 2D angst. Now Murdoc is back and they go on a boating trip without him and are making great music and a whole album without him and it's the best stuff they've had in years.
