Written per suggestion of my dear friend ~
Your eyes met from across the parlor car of the express; barely awake and just emerging from the other side each.
An awkward smile creeps across your face, and you raise your hand to give a tender wave. The other stares for two seconds before acknowledging you with a curt nod and then retreats back into the car.
You flinch slightly when the door closes with a bang.
A sigh makes its way past your lips as you walk through the parlor car, greeting Welt, Himeko and Pom-Pom in the process, before entering the train car through which the other has just left.
The only thing that greets you here is silence - well, at least from the front. The back part is slightly noisy as March blasts music and sings along to it; all while holding a conversation.
An involuntary smile tugs at the corner of your mouth at the thought of the cheery girl jumping around her room in her pink onesie.
Your thoughts wander a little; reminiscing about your first encounter with her and him. A warm feeling bubbles up in your chest at the thought of how you first met them.
Him urging March to do CPR, only to get disappointed by the cheeky pink-haired girl saying she doesn't know how to do it.
And then you came to with a hot guy all in your face, about to lock lips..... only to get shoved away when, the then unknown March, saw your eyes opening.
"Oh, hey y/n! What brings you here?" Said girl suddenly pokes her head out of her room and grins. "Sorry, was I too loud?"
You quickly shake your head, eyes a bit wide. "No, no! You're good! I, uh, came to visit Dan Heng-"
"Oh, he's with me! I can get him if you wan-"
"March, who is it?" Dan Heng questions from inside the room, sounding as aloof as always. Goosebumps cover your skin, and you adamantly shake your head at March before quickly leaving their car.
As you speedwalk back to the other car to try and get back to your room, the door through which you just left opens and just as hurried steps follow after you.
The parlor car is empty, so you just sprint back to your room and throw the door closed. A series of loud knocks hit the wood that you're leaning against, and your heart feels like it might beat out of your throat.
"W-What is it?" You ask, voice shaking unintentionally and giving your nervousness away.
"Y/n?? Are you alright?" March's concerned voice sounded dampened from the door between you. "Can you let me in?"
You sigh and slide open the door, facing her with a tinge of pain in your eyes. "Come on in"
She enters the room and takes a seat on your beanbag as you close the door again, flop down on your bed and sigh deeply. "You heard us talking nonetheless, didn't you?" She breaks the thick silence first.
A quiet hum is all you need to reply and the girl's eyes soften; even though you can't see it. "How much did you hear?"
"I heard him saying that he has plans to leave the express and return to the Xianzhou Luofu soon. I didn't know that Himeko and him had some sort of pact... I thought he was here to stay...." You trail off at the end, air getting caught in your throat at the thought of going about your daily life without him there.
"I don't know too much about it either, but he mentioned that Himeko said he was free to stay until he found his own way or something like that..." She explains and leans back into the beanbag some more. "It's kind of a weird thought, you know? Going on missions without Dan Heng and his smartypants' solutions to everything, or-"
"I don't want him to go."
She remains silent for a while, not finishing her sentence. The two of you remain like this, just staring at the ceiling before the girl gets up.
"You two need to talk. Under four eyes. I'm getting him, and don't you dare run away." She points her finger at you before leaving quickly, not bothering to close the door.
You sit up, growing more anxious by the second. The anxiety spikes when you hear footsteps approaching; light and calculated.
A head of black hair enters your field of vision as Dan Heng stands there in the doorway, like he doesn't know what to do now.
"Come in.." You mumble as you observe his every move - how he enters, closes the door, but doesn't step any closer to you.
"March said we should talk." He states bluntly and straight to the point. The icyness of his voice sends shivers down your spine and goosebumps to once again rise on your skin.
A simple nod is all you can muster, but neither of you finds the ability to start this heavy conversation...
"Why are you leaving?"
He flinches ever so slightly at the vulnerability in your voice, the lack of eye contact and your lowered head.
"I..." He's at a loss for words; physically at least. Mentally he's yelling, thrashing, grabbing your shoulders and shaking you. "Don't you fucking get it?!!"
Dan Heng steps back suddenly once he realized you've risen from your position on the bed and are now face to face with him. "I can tell that there's something you want to get off your chest. Please just talk to me.."
He lowers his gaze, eyes landing on your hands; mostly covered by those black, fingerless gloves he's grown so used to seeing. "I'm... not sure where to start...."
Your eyes soften and you lightly place a hand upon his shoulder. "No matter what it is, I promise it'll be okay. We're a team after all."
His shoulders loosen up slightly, the tension leaving his body thanks to your reassurance. "Have you ever.... thought about our first encounter?"
A blush coats his ears in a red hue, and you feel your own face burn up at the thought of it. Oh, sometimes you'd wished that March hadn't interfered...
Dan Heng notices the direction of where your thoughts are going, and he quickly continues. "I-I see, you do."
"Haha...... uhm, yeah... what exactly are we talking about here?" You begin fumbling with your hands, pulling at your gloves and avoiding his eyes.
".....the cpr." He replies bluntly, but the deeping red color on his ears only intensifies.
"Ohh... yeah, that, uhm..." Your eyes widen and meet his. It's hard not to get lost in them.
"The reason I want to return to the Xianzhou Luofu is...." He pauses for a second, choosing his next words carefully. "Because I like you. More than a trailblaze companion should."
He feels a sense of relief upon finally getting his feelings out of the way. Now, he can leave with no regrets since you're going to reject him anywa-
"I feel the same.."
"Wait- You what?"
The two of you stare at each other in silence, not expecting either reply. But neither of you need to repeat yourself, because everything that needs to be said is exchanged via gazes.
You step forward, getting into his personal space and don't break the deep eye contact. "Are you really going to leave? After this?"
Dan Heng's resolve started wavering the second he saw you before going to March's room. He was so sure of it right until he entered your room.
He tenderly places a hand on the spot where your neck and shoulder are joined, slender fingers gently stroking the back of your neck. "I'm not sure if it's worth it anymore..."
You fight the urge to lean more into his comforting touch, and instead grab hold of his lower arm, keeping it in place. "Then stay."
Dan Heng sighs deeply. "Do you... want me to stay?" His other hand gently plants itself on your waist, its grip comforting.
Instinctively, both of your hands find their way to his shoulders. "Maybe I do..."
The smallest of smiles shows up on his face, and you can't help but do the same.
"Then don't mind if I do." He mumbles, and you didn't even realize how close you both had gotten until his breath hit your lips.
You're just happy that he feels the same way you do - and so you close the gap, lips meeting in the middle and you taste the residue of a mint candy.
