Hydro Excavation Works for Buildings Too
Tumblr media
Many excavation tasks in or under buildings aren’t well-suited to conventional excavating techniques where the equipment you need is hard or impossible to deploy. Hydro excavation works by using a pressurized water jet to turn dirt and dust into a slurry that’s pumped into a truck using a vacuum pump. Most people in construction are familiar with the idea of using water jets or air jets and a vacuum system for things like utility trenches but water jet technology also has many uses under or inside buildings. A hydro excavation company can use its trucks to repair a foundation, tunnel under a foundation, and more. The excavated material, if free of glass, toxic chemicals, or other contaminants, can be taken away for reuse elsewhere.
Interior Hydro Excavation is Faster and Easier
Who wants to use buckets, shovels, and picks to do a job? No one does. But, if conventional excavating equipment is out of the question, hydro excavation is a good option. Being faster means you can save a little money on labor and put your people to work on other aspects of the project. The truck’s long and flexible hose offers access to spaces that are impossible to reach with heavy equipment. The hose and water jet system make it possible to work on tasks that are just hopelessly impractical with conventional equipment.
It Helps with a Variety of Tasks
Hydro excavation trucks vary in design so not all interior excavation work will be practical for all companies that use this technology. Outside of a building or on an undeveloped site, you can still use water jets and vacuum hoses to perform many of the tasks associated with regular construction equipment. However, some jobs in construction are impractical for excavators, backhoes, and drilling equipment. You need flexible and powerful technology to streamline projects like:
Repairing building foundations
Unearthing utility lines
Trenching for new sewer and power lines
Excavation in small spaces
Creating elevator shafts
Expanding basements and cellars
Tunneling under buildings
Elevator shaft repair
Foundation repair or modification work is a common application of hydro evacuation technology. Some common scenarios include buildings that need new concrete footers, retaining walls, or shafts. These projects are quite labor-intensive using simple hand tools or power tools.
Exposing the pipes in a basement is labor intensive without the right equipment. The hydraulic hoses make hydro excavation trucks useful for many of these underground “daylighting” jobs. If the material we remove is uncontaminated we can easily take it away for recycling or use it to fill pits, trenches, or holes that work on the site created.
Tunneling under a building’s foundation for any purpose pretty much demands hydro or air excavation technology. If you need to dig a tunnel for drainage or foundation repair, you want to have an experienced hydro excavation team on the job.
It is Green Technology
LoJac also operates a clean fill dumping site where we can leave the excavated material, assuming it is free of contaminants like glass particles, motor oil, and gasoline. That’s not the only environmental advantage of hydro excavation. The trucks are easier on the landscape than traditional construction equipment. So, in addition to saving money and time, and potentially making the site safer, hydro-excavating is better for the environment.

6 Reasons to Use Hydro Excavation on Your Job Site
Tumblr media
On construction jobs, you have an option when it comes to excavating, trenching, or digging. For those instances, you want to weigh the costs and benefits of conventional methods. Some excavation techniques can be intrusive, costly, or labor-intensive, which makes the work more expensive. Hydro excavation solves those problems by using a vacuum pump to extract material cut loose by a water jet. The technology tends to be faster, more precise, and cleaner, which is important for clean fill projects. Here are six benefits of using hydro excavation companies to remove debris:
1. Speed
Speed and efficiency are priorities when it comes to landscaping or construction jobs. When you need to level part of a landscape or dig a few small trenches, you can save time with hydro excavation. And time is money. The work will go faster and the debris will be easy to remove. In fact, the dirt and pebbles would have been sucked up and stored in a truck. This technology is not hindered by outdoor temperatures, so the risk of weather delays is minimal.
2. Labor Reduction
The excavation equipment saves on labor hours by streamlining debris removal. Because the trucks have a good deal of “reach”, you have more flexibility in where to set up and start digging. This is less true of conventional digging methods. A water and vacuum system is also going to be faster than using manual labor. Digging a trench for a sewage line is almost certainly going to take longer once you add the time taken to dispose of the dirt and rock.
3. Greater Precision
Careful digging means less disruption to the landscape and less waste to remove from the site. Using conventional techniques, you may have to go around plants and other features or just replace them after laying down the pipes or otherwise finishing up whatever excavation work the job requires. A hydro excavation system can be used in landscaping without causing any disruption in the surrounding ground.
4. Increased Sustainability
Material that’s removed from a site can be disposed of in a couple of ways. Uncontaminated material can be carried to a clean fill site for later reuse. This is a great choice where the material is free of glass, heavy metals, or hazardous chemicals. While we are at the site excavating, we can remove larger debris like concrete, bricks, and sand to reuse them on other sites.
5. Lower Cost
If you lack the right equipment for trenching or digging holes for large metal or wood posts for utility poles and outdoor lighting, it might be cheaper to hire a hydro excavation company. Otherwise, you have to hire a contractor. The obvious alternative is to use whatever people and equipment you have on hand. This simply won’t be an option for many jobs and costs quite a bit of time that could be used for other jobs. Because this technology is more precise and less intrusive, it reduces the risk of damaging in-ground pipes or wiring, and other features of the job site that are vulnerable.
6. Less Intrusive
Hydro excavators are less likely to damage underground wires and pipes. The truck’s pumping equipment isn’t likely to hurt the foundation the way other heavy equipment might. LoJac’s boom trucks can stand off from the trenching or potholing work, which is another way the process is less intrusive than other mechanical means of digging.

What Is Clean Fill?
Tumblr media
Any construction or landscaping project is going to generate debris that needs to be disposed of in some fashion. Some of this material — sand, gravel, soil, cement, and brick — can be taken away and used on another project. Some of that material will qualify as clean fill. But what is clean fill?
A variety of construction projects require extracting material and dumping it somewhere else. Some of this can be easily reused on another site because it doesn’t contain any hazardous materials. Dirt, sand, crushed brick, concrete fragments, and similar materials can be removed and stored safely for later use in landscaping and building projects in various ways. This transfer of non-hazardous materials to somewhere where they can be reused is called clean fill.
Construction companies generate clean fill in several ways. Excavating trenches for pipes and cables and digging to create a basement or level foundation will tend to produce lots of “clean” waste material. A clogged pipe may do likewise. If there is evidence of a serious blockage, LoJac can do a CCTV pipe inspection, clear the pipe with our hydro jetting system, and take the material away.
What Are the Benefits of Clean Fill?
If you fill in the ground with dirt that contains organic materials like leaves and wood pulp, it will decay. The ground will sag ever so slightly. This can be a real hazard for residential or commercial structures. True clean fill material avoids this risk to structural integrity. Keeping soil and groundwater free of toxic chemicals is important. If the fill material is contaminated by oil, solvents, and a range of industrial chemicals this is a hazard to water and soil quality. Clean fill material, by definition, has been screened and found to be non-toxic.
