Can we just talk about the importance of this scene?
Amicia experiences an anxiety attack without knowing what one even is. At the end of the scene, she says “what’s happening to me?” As she views her shaking, sweaty palms.
As someone who has experienced anxiety and panic attacks themselves, the first time I played this scene I remember saying out loud “You’re having a panic attack babe.” I felt so much empathy for her. I just wanted to comfort her because I could relate so much to what she was going through. I felt like I was really in her shoes. The theme of anxiety is portrayed so well and accurately in the game.💔 Does anyone else suffer from anxiety and feel the same way?
Although Amicia is not aware of what is happening to her body, she acknowledges the physical symptoms she’s experiencing, including: sweaty palms, (Amicia mentions this in this scene) lightheadedness (Amicia says she’s ‘dizzy,’) shaking, (evidently shown with her hands shaking throughout multiple scenes) and shortness of breath.
Although she doesn’t truly understand the anxiety, it’s made clear during the barn scene when she says: “I’m tired of being afraid!” That she’s aware she’s experiencing extreme fear, for Hugo’s condition and fear or losing him. This is shown when she mentions multiple times throughout scenes: “We’re losing time.” Of course, Lucas was there to help her through it all and risked his own life to get the nightshade for her sake. You can tell he loves her that much and would do anything for her. 🥺💖
Adrenaline prepares you for a freeze, flight or flight response from a sense of ‘danger.’ Amicia’s response (true to character) was to fight, to kill the threat and to rescue Lucas after unwillingly putting him in danger. Hence, why she completely loses control and her own sanity out of suppressed fear in the barn fight.
I wish they explored Amicia’s anxiety further throughout the rest of the game as I feel it kind of just stops at the prison scene with Lucas. However, I understand the barn scene was the final climax from the build up of the anxiety. It was an extremely emotionally intense scene. The irrationality of Amicia's actions in her state was incredibly written. I’m also aware that anxiety can come and go out of nowhere. At the end of the day, it is a game that needed to be consistent paced, rolling along as it focuses on the main story of finding ‘the cure.’
PS: A bonus video for you guys. Lucas is the perfect companion and support system for Amicia. He really observes her, the fact he looks close enough he sees her shaking… 😭 if that ain’t love I don’t know what is.
Lucas cares so much for her well-being and knows she’s ‘troubled’ but doesn’t know exactly how to help but be by her side. In Amicia’s words from ‘Innocence’:“It warms the heart.”🥺💖

Lucas & Amicia (8 - 10 years later)
This drawing took longer than expected because I kept getting distracted. (by myself and every day life) and I’m also a bit rusty when it comes to drawing. Since finishing A Plague Tale: Requiem for the first time, I just kept thinking about Lucas and Amicia and how much I loved their interactions in the game. (I loved all interactions in that game, but those two stroke a cord with me). I kept thinking about how they would meet years later and go on an adventure together, searching for clues about the Macula and working on the common goal of informing future generations. And also falling in love, because OMG they are so cute :D
Also, Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays everybody! (for those who celebrate it) If not you, I hope you have a bit of a break from work/school and you can relax with some good foods and nice company. :-)
