In Los Angeles, Team Reclaims Key Part of Identity
Man, was it nice to see a first half the likes of which the 76ers put together Tuesday in Tinseltown.
Of course, the return of Joel Embiid was big, and welcomed. All he did was score 15 points in the first quarter, en route to racking up 19 by the break.
Then, there were the 76 points the Sixers exploded for through the first 24 minutes of play. The total was a season-high for the team in any half this season, and marked just the fourth time in 25 years the club registered that many points before intermission.
The numbers, though, that interested Brett Brown the most from the first half of the Sixers’ 119-113 victory over the LA Clippers was that his squad assisted on 20 of its 28 field goals, good for 71 percent.
Two days earlier, in a rough loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Sixers generated just 18 assists on 34 baskets, an uncharacteristically low rate for a group that tops the Eastern Conference in assist percentage (65.1).
That the Sixers bounced back quickly from the Portland game was obviously important, and refreshing. That they did so by reclaiming a crucial part of their identity seemed to hearten the head coach the most.
“What is most - by a mile - lately on my mind is the growth of a team, and the cohesion and the ability to share in somebody else’s success, the ability to communicate candidly, and coexist,” Brown told reporters following Tuesday’s win at STAPLES Center. “That’s all I care about that.”
Well, then. What metric is better suited to quantify the essence of a team’s continuity and togetherness than its effectiveness sharing the basketball?
The concept of the “pass is king,” which Brown so often references both internally with his players and publicly when speaking with the media, represents the aorta of his coaching philosophy.
He is especially vigilant of this tenet these days, as the Sixers, despite their overall success, work through an ongoing personnel reboot of sorts on the heels of the Jimmy Butler trade.
Brown takes a high assist percentage performance as further evidence of the roster coming together.
“You don’t just click your heels, throw Jimmy Butler in, and everybody’s going to be playing the same way and style. It doesn’t work like that,” he said. “My job is to grow a team. Playing together is always, by a longshot, what’s most on my mind.”
The parts, the Sixers feel, are there. It’s just a matter of smoothing certain things out.
“That’s why the 20 passes was king,” Brown said. “That’s what interests me - playing together, sharing the ball, acknowledging an assist, lifting somebody off the floor, sharing in somebody else’s success. That’s what makes coaching enjoyable also.”
As Brown put it Tuesday in Los Angeles, in the coaching profession, the fight for the “soul” of a team is real, and constant.
Sure, moving the ball is critical to the design of the Sixers’ offensive style of play, but the significance Brown attaches to passing clearly goes way deeper than that.
It’s a cultural pillar he’s clung to since his earliest days with the franchise, and believes it will continue to serve the Sixers’ best interests.
“We’ve come from great depths to arrive here,” Brown said, alluding to the Sixers’ ascent the past three seasons, “and we want more. We do not want to disrespect the effort and work that many people have shared in trying to grow something.”

The Linc - Eagles listed among teams that could potentially trade for Jadeveon Clowney
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Five potential trade partners for the Texans if they move Jadeveon Clowney - The Athletic The chances that the Eagles will land Clowney are very low, but they’re not zero. The big issue that the Eagles — and many other teams — face would be finding the money to sign Clowney to a lucrative extension. That’s an especially tall task in Philadelphia, where the team is going to be building around a high-priced quarterback pretty soon in Carson Wentz. That said, Howie Roseman is not afraid to take big swings. And he views the defensive line as a premium position. Clowney would be a disruptive player who could line up in multiple spots in the Eagles’ scheme. That he’s only 26 has to be appealing to Roseman. A core up front of Fletcher Cox, Derek Barnett and Clowney would create issues for opposing offenses for years to come. If this were a year or two ago, and the Eagles had Wentz on his rookie contract, I could see Roseman making an aggressive push for Clowney. Now? The Eagles will likely kick around the idea internally and might even call. But given what it will take in terms of draft pick compensation and financial commitment, a deal seems highly unlikely. — Sheil Kapadia
The Mack Hollins mystery - BGN Hopefully we’ll see Hollins back out on the field sooner than later. If he can build on the potential he showed as a rookie, I think he can be a solid contributor for this team. It’s just hard to tell how realistic that is at this point. Even if Hollins does return soon, it’s fair to wonder how much his absence has stunted the 25-year-old’s development. (Not to mention going from No. 10 to No. 16 is a bad sign in terms of #JerseyNumberAnalytics.)
Organized Team Activities Progress Report - BGN Radio Michael Kist and Brandon Lee Gowton go over all the happenings from the Eagles’ Organized Team Activities! Wentz, Goedert, a new starter at RG(?), the defensive back configuration and much much more all discussed on this loaded show! Presented by SB Nation and Bleeding Green Nation.
Wentz Lives! - Iggles Blitz It is good to hear Rasul Douglas carried over the momentum from January to the OTAs. He finished the season strong. It sounds like he is ready to really compete for playing time. Interesting that Avonte Maddox was at CB. The Eagles need to find a home for him and let him develop. Maddox is a talented player. You want him on the field.
Carson Wentz brings energy to Eagles practice, along with hope that history won’t repeat itself - CBS Sports Wentz looked spry and agile as he booted out to his right and delivered powerful passes to the sideline off his signature hop-step. He unleashed some perfect deep fades in one-on-one will drills. Things were not nearly as smooth in seven-on-seven and full team drills – “X’s and O’s-wise, things weren’t perfect,” he conceded – though that’s not what this return was really about. This was about just being able to do the same things that all of his healthy teammates could, with no restrictions.
Eagles rookie JJ Arcega-Whiteside and his guardian angels - ESPN When the camera cut to Stanford Cardinal wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside during the 2019 NFL draft, he was sitting on the couch hip-to-hip with his mother, Valorie, in their South Carolina home, friends and family all around them. Valorie intended to burst off the couch and break into a celebratory dance when her boy was selected. But when the call came from the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round that Friday night in April, JJ unexpectedly broke down -- so his mom did, too. ”There’s been a few times I’ve seen JJ cry. That was when my mom died, when I found out I had cancer, and one other time -- he had a little brother that passed during childbirth,” Valorie said. “That’s the three times in my life that I have seen him cry. So when he got emotional and cried, my happy celebration turned ... I just went from laughing and screaming to crying right there with him. ”It was a feeling of so many emotions all at once. How can you be happy and crying and ecstatic and nostalgic and all of these things all at the same time? That’s what it was like, just a big kaleidoscope of emotions.”
Fired-up Tim Jernigan brimming with confidence, motivation and swagger - NBCSP “You gotta listen to what I just said,” Jernigan said, pointing out how obvious it was to him. “It speaks for itself, bro. You’ll see the difference in September then. Ask any coach in here, ask any player in here, what Timmy Jernigan look like? I ain’t gotta brag on myself, I ain’t gotta talk on myself. Ask them. I ain’t gotta say one word. It’s on.” Even when he’s getting ticked off by questions, there’s just something about Jernigan’s energy, his swagger, that separates him. It’s something the Eagles feel when they’re on the field too. It’s why late last season, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz stressed how important Jernigan was to the spirit of their defense.
While cast in Aaron Donald’s shadow, Fletcher Cox will go down as one of the best to ever do it - PFF Among the 125 interior defensive linemen with 500 or more pass-rush snaps since 2015, Donald ranks first in pass-rush grade (95.9), total pressures (375) and pass-rush win percentage (22.1%). Cox ranks second behind Donald in all three metrics. And the trend continues, as Donald led all at his position in pass-rush grade in each of the past four seasons (2015-18). Cox ranked second two of the years (2017 & 2018) and third in another (2015). The five best single-season pass-rush win rates in the PFF era (2006-18) all belong to Donald and Cox. Donald owns the three best (2016, 2017 &2018) and the fifth-best (2015), while Cox owns the fourth-best (2018).
In Year 2, Dallas Goedert is poised for a season to remember - PE.com “You have to get used to the speed of things, for sure,” Goedert said. “It takes some time. As soon as you get here, you’re on the move. It’s tough to catch up sometimes. But if you keep your head down and keep grinding, understanding that it’s your job now, things slow down. I feel like it’s all slowed down for me. I can go out there and just play football and not think. That makes me a better football player. I’m pretty happy with where I’m at, continuing to work, continuing to enjoy this.”
Eagles tight end Zach Ertz ready to build on his record-breaking season - Daily News “On paper, we’ve got an explosive, explosive offense,’’ Ertz said Tuesday after the Eagles finished the first of their 10 spring OTA practice sessions at the NovaCare Complex. “We just have to fine-tune everything and be on point. ”Bringing in a guy like Jordan Howard is going to help us immensely. A guy that you can give the ball to behind five really good offensive linemen and say, ‘Go to work.’ “And DeSean coming back is going to be big for us. He’s just so fast. The first play of the Tampa Bay game last year, he goes 70 yards [for a touchdown] on us. We haven’t had that since he left, honestly. [Jeremy] Maclin had it a little bit. But D-Jac is just another animal.’’ The addition of Jackson is intriguing in two respects. He not only gives quarterback Carson Wentz the most dangerous vertical threat he’s ever had, but Jackson’s speed also should open things up underneath for Ertz and the Eagles’ other two tight ends, Dallas Goedert and Richard Rodgers.
Mike Freeman’s 10-Point Stance: Russell Wilson Is Exactly What the NFL Needs Now - B/R Philadelphia defensive lineman Chris Long retired this past week. Though he’ll be remembered as a talented player who helped the Eagles win their first Super Bowl, his impact has gone far beyond the field. When Colin Kaepernick started taking a knee to protest social justice issues, it set off a chain of events that impacted the sport, and society, forever. One of the more striking aspects of the protests, even after Kaepernick was no longer on the field, was the small number of white players who joined their teammates. Long proudly joined those players voicing their concerns over social injustice. He also funded scholarships in his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, in hopes of promoting educational equity and opportunity. I cannot emphasize enough how much a number of black players appreciated Long’s actions. Long will be missed. Not just for his good play but also for what he meant to black players during one of the most important times in league history.
Brandon Lee Gowton Talks Eagles - 94WIP From Bleeding Green Nation, Brandon Lee Gowton calls in to talk Eagles’ OTAs and Carson Wentz.
Falcons DE Steven Means will miss 2019 season with torn Achilles - The Falcoholic It’s hard, hard news for Means, a journeyman who found a home in Atlanta and was being primed for a bigger role in the team’s defensive end rotation. He signed a one-year extension in February and was one of the team’s only moves at the position this offseason. The move puts Atlanta in a bit of a bind. Means projected to be a key player in the team’s base defense, a role he grew into in 2018. Right now, the Falcons don’t have ton of depth at the position, and his loss puts the onus on rookie edge John Cominsky to play a bigger role in the rotation. Cominsky came into the University of Charleston as a quarterback, and needs development as an NFL defensive end.
Looks like things are on track for Cowboys to make Ezekiel Elliott highest-paid RB in NFL history - Blogging The Boys Pelissero notes that Elliott’s camp and the Cowboys have been in communication despite ongoing contract talks between the team and representatives for Prescott and Cooper. He also mentions that it seems like everyone involved feels that Zeke will soon be the highest-paid running back in NFL history. Read it again. The highest-paid running back in NFL history. Of course, the barometer for running back salary in the NFL is Todd Gurley of the Los Angeles Rams. He got his long-term extension after his third year (that’s where Zeke is now) last offseason, a huge contract to the tune of four years for $60M. [BLG Note: Good luck, Dallas.]
The 2019 NFL Contract-Year All-Stars - The Ringer Players like Bobby Wagner, Michael Thomas, Dak Prescott, and A.J. Green have contract negotiations on the horizon. If they go into the season on the last year of their deals, their performances could make or break their bank account next offseason.
Why I’m glad the NFL didn’t change its ‘unfair’ overtime system - SB Nation Retired NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz gives his thoughts about the current OT system, the potential PI replay tweaks, and the elimination of certain drills.

Take time to get to know your cat
This post was submitted by Project MEOW, the West Philly-based volunteer-run cat rescue organization.
Cats are often generalized as mysterious or capricious animals. While humans have lived with cats for thousands of years, sometimes the communication methods or body language of cats can seem strange. Knowing what a cat is saying with its tail, eyes, and ears is instrumental to any interaction you have with them, whether its coaxing a stray out of hiding, handling a scared or distressed cat, or simply hanging out with your pet at home. Like any other relationship, communication is key to bonding and building trust.
When dealing with an unfamiliar or anxious cat, knowing its warning signs is crucial to help meet the needs of the cat, and make sure no one gets hurt in the exchange. A scared or anxious cat will often flatten its ears back and its tail may either thump up and down or stand straight up, Halloween style. When a cat is sending these signals, along with hissing or growling, stay away! Prolonged direct eye contact also means that cat is sizing you up. While eye contact may be a sign of intimacy and connection for humans, its probably best not to stare directly at an unhappy cat. The best way to calm down an aggressive cat is to simply leave it alone. Turn the lights off and provide a safe space for the cat to relax and feel safe before you try to interact again. If you are trying to build a bond with an unfamiliar cat, this may take some patience!
Despite having a standoffish reputation, cats can be incredibly loving and affectionate and they do show it. Nuzzling, headbutting, and kneading are all ways cats show physical affection, but some less touchy cats may show their love just by hanging out near you, even if they are not touching you. And if your cat looks at you and slowly blinks, it’s a definite sign of trust. (You can blink back!)
Of course, like any other animal or person, personalities within cats vary widely. Interactions and communications with cats will depend on the individual animal. My own cat, whenever he is brought to a new place, disappears immediately and usually takes about three days to re-emerge from hiding whenever we change locations. My friend’s cat however, is an intrepid explorer and hops right out of her carrier to start investigating her new location immediately!
Take time to get to know your cat, and work with them so the two of you can have the best relationship possible.
Thinking of adopting your own cat? You can find a list of all the cats we have up for adoption on our website. Every cat we adopt out is spayed/neutered, vaccinated for FVRC/P, rabies, tested for FELV/FIV and free of worms and or fleas. Each cat has been quarantined for a minimum of two weeks. We would love to find all these former strays a loving home! If you’re unable to have your own pet we are also always looking for volunteers at Project MEOW.

On Thanksgiving Day: Overbrook High beat West Philadelphia High, 12-6, in the 2018 Orange Crush Alumni Football Classic
Even though there was no Turkey Bowl game played on Thanksgiving Day, that didn™t stop a bunch of folks from putting together a football game that would symbolize the tough rivalry that has existed for 95 years between Overbrook High and West Philadelphia High School.
In an effort to keep this neighborhood football rivalry going, members of the Overbrook High School Alumni Association joined forces with the West Philadelphia High School Alumni Association.
Together, they gathered up a bunch of former high school football players and invited them to play in the 2018 Orange Crush Alumni Flag Football Classic. This game was played on a cold morning on Thanksgiving Day. Players, no matter what their ages, put on their football cleats and slapped on their football shirts as they gathered with the other players on the football field. Once the teams had the rules explained to them, they were more than ready to play some football. Of course, this was a flag football game. Players were not allowed to get physical and tackle each other. However, players were allowed to grab an opponent™s flag from their waist. That would indicate that a tackle was made on that player. At that moment, that player would know to stop running with the football.
Both teams played this game on West Philadelphia High™s football field. The game kicked off at 11 a.m. sharp. When this game got started, West Philadelphia High had possession of the football. In less than three minutes, the Overbrook Panthers made a big interception. The Panther player ran the football back. Then, he dashed into the end zone for a touchdown. It was that quick, Overbrook took advantage of its opponent™s mistake. The Panthers led the game, 6-0.
As the temperature was getting colder, both teams were having problems making plays. As a result, both teams were playing tough defense and not allowing too much to happen on the field. The West Philadelphia Speedboys didn™t have any problems moving the football, but they had problems once they got in the red zone. Each time the Speedboys moved the football into the red zone, something wrong would happened which would force them to turn the football back over to the Overbrook Panthers. Meantime, Overbrook had bigger problems to deal with. The Panthers had a hard time running the football. That forced Overbrook to start throwing the football. But by the time their offense started clicking, the first half came to an end. Folks, the scoreboard never changed. Overbrook led the game at halftime, 6-0.
During the halftime intermission, Overbrook High School had a deejay kicking out the music near the stands. He kept the fans dancing on their feet. However, the crowd was small due to lack of promotion and hardly any advertising done for this event. Everything was done on short notice. It was a a while ago when this year™s Turkey Bowl Game was canceled by School District Athletic Director Jimmy Lynch. Lynch canceled the game due to a fight that erupted in the stands at West Philadelphia High™s football field. That game was played between West Philadelphia High and Olney High back on Friday, October 12. After that game, an Olney High football player had jumped into the stands and came to the defense of his mother who was in an argument with a parent of a West Philadelphia High player. The Olney player allegedly took off his cleats and began beating the West Philadelphia parent in her face. He attacked the parent as players from both teams started fighting each other in the stands. That parent was taken to a hospital to receive medical treatment. Meantime, a police investigation was conducted, but there were never any criminal charges filed by the West Philadelphia parent.
In an attempt to keep this year™s rivalry going, this Alumni flag football game was created for the fans of both teams to enjoy. When both teams returned from their lockers to start the second half, Overbrook had received the football. Despite having the football, Overbrook couldn™t score any points. The same thing happened to the West Philadelphia Speedboys during their time with the football.
Neither team could get themselves on track. However late in the third quarter, 38-year-old David Watson, a tight end for the West Philadelphia Speedboys, found himself wide open for a touchdown as he caught a 10-yard pass in the end zone. Watson™s touchdown tied up the game at 6-6. Watson was enjoying his game because it marked the first time he was playing football with his two brothers. Darryl Watson and Darren Watson were also graduates of West Philadelphia High. Both brothers also played high school football for the West Philadelphia High football team.
For much of the fourth quarter, both teams had chances to score touchdowns. However, broken up plays and bad penalties prevented both teams from breaking the tie in this tough football game. This game remained tied, 6-6, until the final seconds of the game. With the football sitting on the 5-yard line, Overbrook was driving towards the end zone. With no timeouts left, there was five seconds left in the game. On the last play of the game, Overbrook wide receiver Mikyeil El-Mekki made a cut from right side of the end zone and Overbrook quarterback Clarence Richardson threw the pass and hit El-Mekki while he was running in stride. It was a solid pass to a good receiver. El-Mekki scored the game-winning touchdown as the game clock expired. Overbrook won the football game, 12-6.
Overbrook wide receiver Mikyeil El-Mekki and West Philadelphia High tight end David Watson met up after the game and shook hands with each other. Both players congratulated each other for playing a great Thanksgiving game.
œI think it™s a great thing to have this Alumni game,” said Mikyeil EL-Mekki who graduated from Overbrook High School in 1990. œI think it™s great thing to keep this going. The competition is so fierce. Just like in basketball, the Overbrook and West Philadelphia High rivalry is full of energy. The games are full of intensity. I think games like these are great for the community and it™s even great for this city. We should have this Alumni game every year for our two schools.”
David Watson, who graduated from West Philadelphia High in 1998, feels the same way.
œIt™s a great feeling to share the same field with my two brothers today,” said David Watson. œWhile I was in high school, I was never able to play on the same team with my two brothers. Today, it was kind of bitter sweet to think how great that would had been. But today, I played with my two brothers and that™s a great feeling to have. I hope this Alumni game continues because I want to share more moments like this with my brothers. Maybe after the Turkey Bowl Game next year, we can play another year of the Alumni game. I think that would be really great.”

Eagles snap counts: Rookie gets 1st action at new position
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Avonte Maddox played the first 20 defensive snaps of his NFL career Sunday afternoon. And he played them at a new position.
Having never played safety before this weekend, Maddox was the extra DB on the field when the Eagles went to their dime package. He was on the field for 28 percent of defensive snaps as their centerfielder.
Maddox, who hadn’t played on defense in the first three games, had an up-and-down game. He had his first career interception but also gave up the game-winning touchdown in the 26-23 overtime loss to the Titans.
The Eagles obviously missed Rodney McLeod, who had knee surgery and was put on IR. Corey Graham played all 71 defensive snaps in his absence. This is going to be his normal workload going forward.
Other defensive snap count notes
• Derek Barnett played the most snaps of the defensive ends for the second consecutive game. That’s even more impressive because, unlike Michael Bennett and Brandon Graham, Barnett doesn’t slide inside on passing downs. Barnett played 54 snaps (76 percent), followed by Graham (41 snaps, 58 percent), Michael Bennett (36 snaps, 51 percent) and Chris Long (29 snaps, 41 percent).
• Corey Graham, Jalen Mills and Jordan Hicks played all 71 snaps, while Malcolm Jenkins and Ronald Darby played 70. Jordan Hicks is the only guy to play every defensive snap so far this season (258).
• Fletcher Cox played 60 snaps and continues to play a really high percentage of defensive snaps. He came into the game at 87 percent and played 85 percent in this game.
• After Destiny Vaeao played more snaps than Haloti Ngata in the opener, Ngata has clearly overtaken him on the depth chart. On Sunday, Ngata played a season-high 37 snaps, while Vaeao had 21. Ngata picked up his first sack of the year.
Offensive snap count notes
• I was wondering how much Alshon Jeffery would play in his 2018 debut. Not only because of the shoulder injury, but because he had a nasty virus during the week. But Jeffery played 65 snaps (83 percent) and had his first 100-yard game as an Eagle. He was one of the few bright spots from the loss.
• Without Corey Clement (quad) and Darren Sproles (hamstring), Jay Ajayi led the way for the running backs with 41 snaps, followed by Wendell Smallwood (36) and Josh Adams (1). Ajayi and Smallwood had pretty good games and they probably weren’t used enough in the run game.
• It looks like Jordan Matthews has clearly overtaken Kamar Aiken on the depth chart. Aside form Matthews’ 56-yard touchdown, he was also on the field much more Sunday. Matthews played 47 snaps (60 percent), while Aiken played just 9. But before you think the Eagles are going to cut Aiken, it’s important to note that he played 16 special teams snaps. Meanwhile, Shelton Gibson got just three offensive snaps, but is also a big special teams contributor.
• Dallas Goedert had just two catches for 13 yards, but at least he played more than Josh Perkins in this game. Goedert played 31 snaps (40 percent), while Perkins played just eight. Zach Ertz barely leaves the field anymore. He played 97 percent of the snaps (76).
• Carson Wentz and the starting OL (aside from Brandon Brooks, who missed one snap) played every down. That’s impressive because Jason Kelce is clearly hobbled by something and Jason Peters left the field to get checked out, but ran back out there before missing a play.
Here’s a full look at snap counts from Sunday:
Offense
Lane Johnson: 78 snaps (100 percent)
Stefen Wisniewski: 78 (100)
Jason Kelce: 78 (100)
Jason Peters: 78 (100)
Carson Wentz: 78 (100)
Brandon Brooks: 77 (99)
Zach Ertz: 76 (97)

We’re Launching a Podcast! Meet City Rising
Pssst. We have a secret that’s out of the bag.
If you follow us on Instagram, you may have seen pics of us in the studio or teasing our new project.
Meet City Rising, a podcast that compares how different cities are approaching sustainability and climate solutions. City Rising is co-hosted by me, Julie Hancher, and my friend Brady Halligan, formerly of the GREEN Program. It totally made sense to partner with Brady on this series – this is just one reason:
Together, we take turns interviewing guests from various cities to discuss how our environment is connecting people, planet and creates future opportunities. We each explore one topic (for example, green buildings) for two episodes, interviewing two guests from two different cities working on the issue. In each episode, you’ll hear one of those interviews along with practical tips to become a little more sustainable.
We’ve been in the studio over the summer working on the podcast, so have season one ready for you.
Season 1 topics of city rising include:
How are cities combatting carbon? Join us for Office of Sustainability comparisons with Philadelphia’s Director of Sustainability Christine Knapp and Orlando’s Director of Sustainability Chris Castro.
Reimagining the way we design our urban built environment with Philadelphia’s Green Building United Alex Dews and Pittsburgh’s Green Building Alliance Angelica Ciranni.
Stay tuned for more exciting upcoming topics and guests!
When does the first episode of City Rising come out?
Episodes will drop weekly on Wednesdays starting October 3rd.

Meltkraft, Reading Terminal’s Grilled Cheese Stand, Will Close
News
The sandwich spot and cheese shop owned by Valley Shepherd Creamery will be out of the market by midsummer.
Meltkraft, the grilled cheese stand and regional cheese shop in Reading Terminal Market owned by New Jersey-based Valley Shepherd Creamery, will close this summer.
Carla Norelli, manager of the Reading Terminal location, confirmed that Valley Shepherd’s lease, which is up at the end of June, was not being renewed. “As to why, I’m not really sure,” she said. “That goes through the owner, not through me.”
A manager at the farm in Long Valley confirmed the closure but was unable to give an exact date service would cease, saying they’re taking things “week by week” for now. The company plans to move the operation to New York’s Essex Street Market, first with a retail cheese counter, then adding in grilled cheese sandwiches.
“I’d chalk it up to just not being the right fit for either organization at this time,” said Anuj Gupta, Reading Terminal’s general manager.
Gupta said there aren’t yet plans for what will occupy the space along the east wall of the market after Meltkraft is out. But he did note that the market is currently accepting proposals for new fresh food concepts selling groceries, produce, meat, cheese, and other ingredients for home cooking, one of which may prove to be a good fit. Proposals are due by this Friday, May 17th.
Meltkraft’s Reading Terminal location, which opened in 2013, was forced to close temporarily back in April for health code violations. A second Philly location at 17th and Chestnut opened in 2015 but closed in late 2017.

In lawsuit filing, Media Mobilizing Project calls for more diversity in media ownership
In a reply brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Washington D.C.-based nonprofit Free Press and allies like Philly’s Media Mobilizing Project called on the Federal Communications Commission to advocate for more diverse ownership in radio and TV stations.
“The FCC tries to have it both ways — claiming it has addressed race [and] gender ownership diversity yet insisting it cannot,” the groups say in the brief, filed on Friday. “Neither is true: The FCC must heed its obligation to at minimum do no harm to race [and] gender diversity by apprising itself of knowable facts.”
The document, a joint statement that was also undersigned by the Common Cause, the Communications Workers of America, the Prometheus Radio Project and the United Church of Christ Office of Communication, Inc., was introduced as part of a lawsuit that challenges the federal agency’s repeal of several broadcast-ownership rules that limit media consolidation.
Across the U.S., hundreds of local TV stations are in the hands of just two large broadcast groups: Sinclair and Nexstar. Critics of the FCC’s move repeal of the rules say it further hinders station ownership diversity at a time when partisanship among Americans is at its highest level in decades.
“The FCC has repeatedly failed to foster a media system that reflects our nation’s diversity,” said Free Press Policy Manager Dana Floberg. “On several occasions, the court has told the agency that it can’t bless further media consolidation without first examining how such consolidation impacts ownership opportunities for women and people of color. The FCC responded by further weakening its rules with zero concern about the appalling lack of diversity in ownership.”
The FCC did not immediately respond a request for comment on the group’s filing.
With a rapidly growing number of Americans getting their news from social media, how relevant is the discussion around radio and TV ownership? Extraordinarily so, and especially in Philadelphia, says Hannah Sassaman, policy director at Media Mobilizing Project.
“Most Americans still get their news from TV — with local TV being the most popular source,” Sassaman said. “In a city like Philadelphia, where broadband access is the second worst of any big city in the United States, TV reliance is even heavier — so diverse news sources are essential to try to change and fight deep problems of poverty and racial injustice.”
According to Pew Research Center data, 22% of TV viewers access television news via digital mechanisms, like websites or social media, which Sassaman says is evidence of traditional media outlet presence even among people who say they get their news online.
A spokesperson for Free Press said the oral arguments for the lawsuit have concluded, and a decision could be expected as early as the end of summer.

Woman Charged For Stealing Laundry, Including US Postal Worker’s Uniforms, At Apartment Complex, Police Say
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) — Police in Washington Township say a woman has turned herself in following a laundry room theft at an apartment complex. Police say 50-year-old Dona Tighe is currently in custody.
According to police, Tighe turned herself in after seeing social media posts of herself stealing laundry from Washington Way Apartments on Friday. Police say United States Postal uniforms were stolen and they are working to retrieve that and other clothing.
Stealing USPS worker’s clothing could be a federal charge.
“They’re federal employees and it could potentially lead to some issues if someone gets their hands on them, that would decide to wear the uniform out and about,” Washington Township Police Capt. Christopher Pelosi said.
Tighe has been charged with theft of moveable property.

Guard Shoots Man Trying to Get Into Fox Station in DC
A security guard shot a man who broke through two doors and entered the lobby of WTTG, the local Fox station in Washington, D.C., Monday afternoon.
The suspect, 38-year-old George Odemns, said he wanted Fox 5 to make contact with President Donald Trump, sources told News4. D.C. Police Commander Melvin Gresham said at a press conference that he could not confirm that possible motive.
D.C. police said Odemns was trying to get into the building on Wisconsin Avenue NW at Harrison Street. He kicked out the glass of two doors and was able to enter the lobby.
A female security guard told Odemns to stop as he continued into the main building, according to police reports. When he didn't stop, she fired.
Sources also told News4 that the guard tried to subdue Odemns with pepper spray.
Odemns was not armed, Gresham said. No one else was injured.
Odemns was taken to George Washington University Hospital with a wound to the upper body. He remains in stable but critical condition.
Police say he was charged with second-degree burglary, which carries a sentence of two to 15 years if a conviction is made.
Odemns is homeless and has a history of contacting local news stations, including Fox 5, WUSA and News4, in long, rambling emails. In August, he was charged with assault on a police officer who was attempting to break up a verbal argument, according to police documents.
Fox 5 staffers wrote about the incident on Twitter as it unfolded.
"Everyone is okay," anchor Jim Lokay tweeted. "Sources tell us suspect tried to get into our secure building. Security guards opened fire."
"Man was conscious as he was transported into ambulance a few minutes ago. Surreal to be reporting on this," wrote reporter Lindsay Watts about 3:30 p.m.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she met with police chief Peter Newsham to discuss the situation.
Police said the call for the shooting was made about 3 p.m. They are checking surveillance cameras in the area for more information.
No further information was released immediately on the intruder's motive. Police did not identify the security guard or specify her whereabouts.
Stay with NBC4 and NBCWashington.com for more on this developing story.

Johnsson Has 1St-Period Hat Trick, Maple Leafs Rout Flyers
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
TORONTO (AP) – Andreas Johnsson had a hat trick midway through the first period and the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 on Saturday night.
John Tavares, Patrick Marleau and Josh Leivo also scored, and backup goalie Garret Sparks made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season and the second of his career. Mitch Marner added two assists.
Neither team was assessed a penalty for the second consecutive game at Scotiabank Arena. The NHL’s last penalty-free game before this week came in March 2017.
Calvin Pickard, who was claimed by the Flyers on waivers from Toronto before the start of the season, allowed four goals on six shots for Philadelphia (10-11-2) before being pulled. Anthony Stolarz allowed two goals on 34 shots in relief.
Coming off back-to-back road losses, including a 4-2 decision at Columbus on Friday night, the Leafs built a 4-0 lead after just 12:20 thanks in large part to the first hat trick of Johnsson’s career.
The speedy winger got things going at 4:45 when he faked a slap shot off the rush before sliding the puck between Pickard’s pads for his third goal of the season. Johnsson made it 2-0 just 1:34 later when he blocked a point shot from defenseman Christian Folin and raced in alone and beat Pickard through the five-hole for a second time.
Marleau got in on the action at 7:44 when he fired his fifth into an open net off a scramble after a poor Philadelphia clearing attempt. A teammate of Pickard’s with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League last season, Johnsson completed his hat trick – the 24-year-old had just four goals in 27 career NHL games before Saturday – on another shot between the pads from in tight after stealing the puck from a Flyers defender.
That ended the night for Pickard, who was coming off a 31-save shutout in Philadelphia’s 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday afternoon that snapped the Flyers’ four-game skid (0-3-1).
NOTES: Flyers winger James van Riemsdyk returned to face the Leafs for the first time. He played six seasons in blue and white before signing a five-year, $35 million contract with Philadelphia on July 1. He was honored with a first-period video tribute. … Johnsson is the eighth Leafs player to score a first-period hat trick and the first since Wendel Clark on Oct. 11, 1986.

These 10 companies made it to WeWork’s second Veterans in Residence program
Adam Nelson, northeast experience director for veteran entrepreneurship nonprofit Bunker Labs, says there’s a common trait among people who start their business after serving in the military.
“[They] have the ability to keep pushing forward no matter what hardships come down the pike,” said Nelson, an Iraq war veteran and himself an entrepreneur. “In the military, missions have to be completed no matter what. That same mentality is applied in the business world. You want to be successful no matter what so you can support your family.”
That attitude drives much of the programming for the upcoming WeWork Veterans in Residence program, powered by Bunker Labs, which kicks off next week. The four-month sprint will connect 10 Philly-area founders — all veterans or veteran spouses — to mentorship and programming around branding, scaling operations, raising capital and marketing.
(Here’s a look at the inaugural class of companies, which kicked things off last year.)
There’s no universal outcome to the program, Nelson said: Each company sets its own goals and works towards them.
“At a high level we want them to grow,” the veteran said. “We want them to solve the problems they have and make strides toward building a client base that they’re proud of.”
Here’s the list of participating companies:
Concihairge — Provides contemporary, salon-quality hairstyling services in the convenience of clients’ homes or other on-site locations
CS Silhouette — Providers of beauty, skincare and non-invasive weight loss solutions
Delaware Regional Training Group — A security company developing real-time scenarios with role players to teach military and law enforcement members
EGA Associates — Healthcare consulting and clinical staffing firm
EZDispensing: — Assists medical practices in setting up and operating in-office dispensing programs
Phillyanthropy — A for-profit providing nonprofits “insights, knowledge and motivation” necessary for their day-to-day operations
Populouz — Organizational development consultancy focused on human capital and capacity
RTB Limited — Consulting, training and coaching firm, focusing on “People, Process and Profits”
ShuttleBee — Solving transportation issues for kids, providing drivers with “technology, insurance and logistics support needed to excel at their job”
Trend Lab — A digital marketing agency specifically geared toward social media advertising for local businesses

Eagles need to do the right thing and make Malcolm Jenkins happy
There’s no need to beat around the bush. The headline says it all:
The Eagles need to do the right thing and do what it takes to make Malcolm Jenkins happy.
Though Jenkins himself hasn’t explicitly voiced displeasure, there’s obviously evidence to suggest he’s not satisfied with his current contract situation. After all, he is not attending voluntarily OTAs for the first time in his entire career. The possibility he could skip June’s mandatory minicamp — which would incur an $80,000ish fine — also hasn’t been ruled out. And it’s probably not just a coincidence that Jenkins is posting Twitter videos that demonstrate his value to the team.
Jenkins isn’t wrong to believe he’s undervalued. He’s currently the league’s ninth highest paid safety in terms of annual value at $8.75 million. The final two years on his current contract contain base salaries of $8.1 million and $7.6 million with zero dollars in guaranteed salary (per Over The Cap).
One can only speculate what Jenkins is looking for in terms of compensation. Whatever the case, though, he’s worth it.
The Eagles MUST pay him.
Those reluctant for the Eagles to pay Jenkins will trot out the “honor the contract!” line. That’s a bad justification to not pay Jenkins because every single NFL team fails to honor contracts every offseason. Teams cutting players in order to clear cap space is an extremely common occurrence.
There are also those who will say paying a player with two years left on his deal sets a bad precedent. In a vacuum, I can understand that argument. As a team, you don’t want to have to keep giving guys even more money just a couple years into their long-term extensions.
In the specific case of Jenkins, though, I don’t think the bad precedent is rewarding a player who’s already under contract for two more seasons. Rather, the bad precedent would be the Eagles failing to reward a player who has gone so far above and beyond the call of duty.
You don’t need me to tell you how valuable Jenkins is to the Eagles ... but I’ll do it anyway.
Jenkins is a two-time Super Bowl champion, three-time Pro Bowl selection, and a one-time second-team All-Pro safety.
Jenkins is the Eagles’ heart and soul of the team as their defensive captain and most vocal locker room leader. He’s the kind of player who can help turn a season around. We just saw this in 2018 when Jenkins called on defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to simplify the team’s defense in a Week 12 win over the Giants. The Eagles were down 19-3 to New York and it was looking like their season might be over until Jenkins intercepted Eli Manning. That pick was a turning point for a team that came up just short of advancing to a second straight NFC Championship Game appearance.
Jenkins is an incredibly versatile player. During the Eagles’ Super Bowl season, for example, Jenkins played 42% of his snaps at linebacker, 30% at nickel cornerback, 24% at safety, and 4% at outside cornerback.
Jenkins is arguably the toughest and most durable son of a gun on the entire Eagles roster. He didn’t miss a single defensive snap last season. Here’s a breakdown of Jenkins’ snap counts since first signing with the Eagles:
2014 — 1,164 2015 — 1,204 2016 — 1,018 2017 — 1,151 2018 — 1,177
All of this doesn’t even include the outstanding work Jenkins does off the field. He won the Byron “Whizzer” White Community MVP award in 2017, which is the highest honor the NFLPA can bestow upon a player.
If paying Jenkins now means the Eagles are setting a precedent where they have to reward players who are similar to Jenkins in the future, that’s a great “problem” to have. As a team, you should want your young players to emulate this role model who majorly contributed to the franchise’s first ever Super Bowl victory.
With Jenkins missing OTAs and Rodney McLeod still recovering from ACL/MCL injuries, the Eagles are currently running with Andrew Sendejo and Tre Sullivan as their first team safeties. That’s just not going to cut it when September gets here.
It’s my belief the Eagles will do the right thing and reward Jenkins at some point. Maybe it’s something like what they did with Brandon Graham’s contract back in 2017. Maybe it’s something even more lucrative than that.
The bottom line is: the Eagles need to pay that man his money.
