“You know? I hate when you have a point...” Aloma couldn’t help the grin that formed on her face, shaking her head slightly. “As for if anyone is expecting me to be Hagrid? No idea, but I know everyone was used to him and the position has pretty big shoes to fill. But you have a point...” She took a deep breath, rubbing her face slightly as she really considered it, her eyes catching the movement of his hand before smiling again and looking back at him.
“Does it surprise you to hear that you being there actually still puts me at ease? Either way, you’ve convinced me...so what comes next?”

The snow this year seemed colder to Charlotte, her fingers stiff as she fumbled to draw her scarf tighter around herself. The snow crunching beneath her boots was unsatisfying and she restrained the urge to stomp her feet childishly like a child throwing a tantrum. Despite having the day to relax - a welcome relief after the chaos at the Department - Charlotte found herself restless and bitter. It seemed wrong that Christmas was coming around like usual again, that the children she passed on the way into the Leaky Cauldron still managed to be excited by the holiday cheer. Her usual anticipation for Christmas stemmed from being able to celebrate with Alfie, but now… What was there to look forward to? Her mother was eager to have a celebration just like any other year, but Charlotte couldn’t help but think it was pointless - nothing could erase the large gap where Alfie had been. It would just be painful. She sighed. I wonder what Christmas will be like this year, she thought, stepping through the pub.
“Wonder what Christmas will be like this year. . .” Charlotte stumbled, her foot catching the corner of the table as she looked around in surprise. It was a strange experience to have her thought’s spoken aloud by a stranger, though the tone behind them didn’t seem as melancholy as Charlotte’s.  Caught off guard, she gave a small smile at the woman sitting at the table. “Sorry - I was just thinking the same thing actually.” She paused awkwardly, eyes falling on the black and white images of the Daily Prophet on the table and wondering if she would seem creepy if she tried to start a conversation. “Seems kind of strange that Christmas is here after everything, don’t you think?”
Aloma jumped a bit when the other woman bumped into her table, looking up at her concerned. “Are you alright? You aren’t hurt are you?” Her face changed from concern to a soft smile, shaking her head a bit. “No you’re fine, just caught me off guard is all.” She followed her gaze down to the paper, scowling at it again slightly before turning to face the stranger. “Took the words right out of my mouth actually. It definitely won’t be like any Christmas I’ve had before, especially with no one being allowed to leave the UK.”
That was probably the part that hurt most of Aloma. With the travel ban in effect, knowing she’d spend the holidays without her parents made everything seem less colorful somehow. She shook her head a bit to break from the train of thought, glancing back up at her new conversation partner. “Sorry, got lost in thought...just remembered I need to send my parents an owl here in the next few days.”

Aloma looked back at Julian, sticking her tongue out just a bit before taking a sip of her coffee. “Because the timing just...never seems right Julian. And I know you didn’t, but I was never sure if teaching was something I wanted to do in the first place.” She sighed softly and set her cup down, glancing at the paper sitting on the table for a moment before looking up at him. “However...maybe now is the closest I’m going to get to the perfect time. I don’t know...do you think anyone will take me seriously as a professor? I mean, I’m nothing like Hagrid...”
She’d have been lying if she said that she wasn’t scared or nervous about becoming a professor, but she knew the school needed her, more so now than the last time Julian had brought it up. Granted she was excited about the prospect of seeing Julian more often, something she hadn’t been able to do since their time at school. There were days that she missed being a student, when she only had to worry about making it to class on time and things we simpler, if she could call them that. Granted her relationship with Julian had never quite been simple, Aloma had known that from day one. “Alright fine, maybe now is the best time to consider a job at Hogwarts...there’s now way I’ll be able to live up to Hagrid, but I can at least try.”

“What would it be like to work at Hogwarts?” Aloma mumbled quietly to herself as she sat at a small table in the Leaky Cauldron. The thought had crossed her mind several times, working as a Care of Magical Creatures professor, though she always found a reason to put it off. She sighed as she glanced over the Daily Prophet, scowling when she saw Rita Skeeter’s name on the front page. Didn’t she have anything better to do with her time than stir up panic and emotions that, publicly at least, had been dead nearly thirty years?
She rolled her eyes a bit and laid the paper down, taking a sip of her drink before glancing about. Her eyes were drawn to the view outside the window, several of the storefronts and small shops were covered in a thin layer of snow as if nature itself was trying to send the reminder “It’s almost Christmas, be happy!” Though Almoa knew happiness would be hard to find this year. Between the travel ban and her own crazy work schedule, visiting her parents for the holidays was out of the question, she knew that. Her thoughts wandered the longer she sat staring out the window, her focus not completely on her surroundings or the people in them as her mind continued to return to thinking of the upcoming holiday. “Wonder what Christmas will be like this year…”
“I don’t see why you keep waiting to work at Hogwarts…” Julian rolled his eyes playfully, his hand drumming against the back of the chair across Aloma. Truth be told, Julian didn’t expect that his career trajectory would revolve around making sure the school didn’t implode on itself – or at least having the students evacuate before all of that happened. “… I certainly didn’t wait very long.”
He had been under McGonagall’s wing since he consistently received top marks in Transfiguration since his fourth year. Whatever potential he had after finishing his NEWTs was something he didn’t think should be wasted on the Ministry, and having looked up to Professor McGonagall for so long he was more than floored that she had offered to keep him as teaching assistant after he voiced his concerns about the kind of work the Ministry had to offer.
“Now that Hagrid had passed, Care of Magical Creatures has been… well, it actually hasn’t been. It’s been a struggle to find a substitute on such short notice, especially dealing with the more temperamental animals.”
The two had been friends, though their busy schedules meant that they were typically unable to meet regularly. It just so happened that Julian was making his way through to do his own shopping, having stayed in London as he recovered from the attack. St. Mungo’s finally let him go – though it may have been his brother’s frightening demeanor that convinced them rather than his actual state of wellness.
“It would make a great gift for the school to have you on board.” He was being blunt about the matter now, though he expected her to decline again. This wouldn’t be the first time he had made this suggestion – though Julian never really made the prospect that enticing to begin with and he just wasn’t ever sure how to talk to Aloma anymore, having her as an ex and now as a friend he only saw occasionally. Now circumstances were different, more urgent, more serious than before.

It was a busy time of year for James. If you were part of the Weasley-Potter family then you knew that the Christmas holiday meant presents for everyone, dinner at The Burrow, and craziness on top of craziness. Plus add the travel ban and all of the other stuff driving the British world insane and you have yourself one hell of a Christmas holiday.
He decided to stop by the Leaky Cauldren to take a break. He was trying to find his mother the perfect gift this year. In the middle of waiting for his order and writing a list of places to go, he heard someone thinking out loud. Something he found himself doing quite often. “Purely chaotic. That’s my opinion of course. Even though it’s my favorite holiday of the year after my birthday.” He tried to explain to the stranger. “Do you have any big plans?”
Aloma jumped a bit when the stranger’s voice broke her from her daydream, following the source to its owner. “Christmas is always chaotic, whether in a good or bad way. Though I do believe most people favor their birthday over Christmas.” She smiled a bit and shook her head. “Not my usual ones no...I would if it weren’t for the travel ban though. My parents live in Ireland and I normally visit for the holidays. What about you stranger?”

Aloma: A History
Early Years
Aloma was born in Cork, but raised near Ballincollig, Ireland to Anthony and Iris Goldstein. She grew up loved and cherished by her parents and her uncle Ernie, who called her “Little Dove”, listening to stories about her parents’ and uncle’s time at Hogwarts. Early on she developed a love for magical creatures and confidently told her parents that she wanted to be a magizoologist when she grew up. Due to her family’s close ties with Justin Finch-Fletchley, it surprised no one when she and Justin’s child became close friends years prior to attending Hogwarts in 2015. Aloma had her first interaction with a magical beast at 8 when she was wandering outside her family home and stumbled upon an orphaned Aethonan foal which she promptly brought to her parents. After hours of begging her father to help the creature, he agreed and started making the preparations to build a stable and register the animal with the Ministry. From that moment on Aloma and Star Stepper, as she named him, became practically inseparable until it was time for the former to attend school.
School Years
Aloma started her education at Hogwarts in 2015, surprising only her father when she was sorted into Hufflepuff. She very quickly showed a talent for herbology and transfiguration, though she struggled through her potions and astronomy classes her first year at Hogwarts, leading her to dislike both. As soon as she was able, she started taking Care of Magical Creatures, which remained a constant through the rest of her time at school. She attempted to branch out slightly with taking Alchemy during her sixth year but dropped the class before taking her N.E.W.T exams. She accepted the position as one of Hufflepuff’s prefects at the start of her fifth year after talking the decision over with her parents, though she did later turn down the position of Head Girl. Despite her cheerful nature and overall positive time at Hogwarts things did not always stay that way, during her fourth year she started dating another student and though things seemed to be going well they broke up shortly before the end of her fifth year.
Present Day
Shortly after graduating from Hogwarts, Aloma spent some time at home with her family before heading to London. She got a small flat near Diagon Alley, working in the Magical Menagerie for a few months before she finally got her job as a Magizoologist. She worked hard for several years until she had the money saved up to buy a house outside of London, with more than enough space for Star Stepper to leave her parents’ home and be with her again. As of November of 2027 Aloma has had a very successful career in her field, leading her to consider applying for a position as the Care of Magical Creatures professor at Hogwarts, though she still feels like she isn’t quite ready for that. She is worried about everything going on around her, the ever-increasing tension between pureblooded families and half-blood or even muggle-born wizards and witches that is starting to emerge again, and the recent attack on Hogwarts. She’s determined to do what she can to help, whatever that may be in hopes of restoring the peace her parents and their friends fought so hard for nearly thirty years before.
