"We are so chauvinistic and so brainwashed to humans being superior to all other forms that the ignorance this causes has become something close to horrific. The bullshit--certainly the most appropriate word--about manifest destiny and how we have dominion over all other creatures has caused such terrors as vivisection, cosmetic testing, use of animals (particularly beagles, for some reason) in aerospace testing, and I think ultimately led to such monstrosities as death camps and genocide, which are really nothing more than an insanely rabid expression of one race thinking they are superior to another." ~ Gary Paulsen, "Puppies, Dogs, and Blue Northers"

The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Tumblr media
I know I'm in a lot of pretty small Fandoms, but I'm pretty sure the Gary Paulsen Hatchet/Brian series has literally no following whatsoever. My brothers and I have loved those books for many years, and I feel like everyone has read the hatchet at some point in childhood and then forgot about it. The books are so intriguing in both story and writing style. I've grown to love Brian as a character.

Posting this for the people who think that Tolkien's world-building was something complete and entire and finished before he started to write.

Do you ever think about how Hamlet starts after the king’s death - after Hamlet has fallen into depression - therefore, we have no idea of knowing what Hamlet was like before all of it went down?
Do you ever wonder what Hamlet was like before tragedy struck? Who was the man Horatio and Ophelia were in love with? Who was the man that the people of Denmark adored?
Because I do. All the time.

reasons why I should never be allowed to direct a production of Hamlet
I am not qualified in any way
I would make Rosencrantz and Guildenstern be making out all the time. Like it would be the running gag. Every moment they were on stage they’d be making out and when one of them had a line they’d have to disentangle while all the other characters impatiently waited. Yes this includes them walking on or off stage.
Ophelia is a pastel goth
Polonius has to nod aggressively at everything Claudius or Gertrude ever says to the point where he looks like a bobble head. This is what gives him away behind the curtain, he’s nodding so hard Hamlet can see it
Hamlet is a fucking tease and almost gives Horatio a blowjob while convincing him to spy on Claudius during the play (trust me, the dialogue works for this, it’d be hilarious) But like it would be an intense moment while they’re hidden away in the “backstage” of the play that’s about to be put on and Hamlet is like literally on his knees begging for help in a sexy kind of way, yknow?
Surprise musical number during the intermission and if you have to pee that’s just too bad and you’ve missed it
The play actually starts with the last part of the last scene. yeah the one where everyone’s already dead and Fortinbras and Horatio are saying they need to haul the bodies up to show to people and tell the story of what happened here. So its like you, the audience, are the people of Denmark. You, the audience, witnessed a tragedy. And now, the characters are going to tell you the story of how things came to be this way. So actually the story never ends, its a cycle of people making bad decisions and dying and others trying to warn you about it but its too late because they’re already making those bad decisions again. And you, the audience, are complicit in this.

making Hamlet fanart in 2024, slapping Juicy (main hero of Fat Ham, a modern play, Hamlet version, played by black fat queer person) on char design i saw in old b&w film while listening MCR playlist was an experience
highly recommend. also pls watch/read Fat Ham upd: image description added! (in alt text, but also under the cut)
(Image Description: List of sketches with 3 drawings. The textures used here are elegant looks-like photo silk (for clothes), soft shades and gradients. Shapes are sinking in each other depth. No color, black and white
It's fanart depicting Hamlet character being combination of different versions of him from different media: fat black queer masculine person being elegant, wearing mascara and lipstick (took from modern play Fat Ham) wearing vintage royal clothes (took from old classic film). The narrative of sketches also mixed of modern play (Fat Ham) and classic one
There are 3 sketches:
First one. It's the character described above (TC in text further) sitting in side view. His eyes is closed and face has melancholic emotion. TC is holding a scull. There is a simple-shaped silhouette of crown above his head. This image represent classic play melancholic vibes of character fused with modern play appearance
Second sketch. It's TC singing, while holding white pigeon in hands. It had previous classic-modern fusion vibes + a little vibe of disney princess song (because of bird and emotion expression similar to disney musicals). By left side of this sketch is stylized speech babble with music notes symbols and deformed text, visualization of singing. The text saying: "I want a perfect body", quoting singing of TC from modern play. By the right side of sketch there is arrow pointing at character with text "has most perfect body ever".
Sketch Three. It's dynamic sketch of TC in a duel (opponent is out of the frame), waving a thin sword (idk how it in eng, in my first it's шпага, a sword but specific type of it). From the chest of TC it's going steam, like character is heated mechanism pushed to limits. The face of TC is strong and determined, with mouth wide open trying to catch breath. Near this sketch is text: (text starts here) "He is fat and scant of breath" - original play quote. i know Fat Ham message. this one [the sketch with duel] here for slay jpeg reason (text ends here).
End of Image description)

AITA for acting crazy to expose my uncle for being an asshole?
My (age unimportant) father recently passed away. It hasn't been very long since he's died, and my mother (40+F) has married my uncle (?M), aka my dad's brother.
The other day, when I was hanging out with my friend H, I came upon some evidence suggesting my father's passing was correlated with something my uncle did. For some reason, I thought it best to act as if I'd lost my mind to prevent my family from figuring out that I'd found some suspicious information.
Apparently, the way I was behaving really freaked out my girlfriend, O, and she ended up calling her dad and my uncle, who are friends with each other.
So at this point, I've got no one on my side. My mom literally asked two of my old friends to hang out with me in order to figure out what I was hiding (controlling much???).
When I went to go talk to her about it, I accidentally ended up hurting my girlfriend's dad (i thought he was my uncle), and I got kicked out of the house.
I'm currently writing this post on a pirate ship on my way back to Denmark after I may have condoned those two childhood friends of mine to get beheaded by the king of England.
So, would I be or not be the asshole? That is the question.
What are these acronyms?

A modernization of hamlet that takes place in a bakery called “the danish king” and its kinda slapstick kinda not and hamlet is cleaning up the bakery, knocks a bag of flour, and the cloud of flour becomes his dads ghost and as their conversation ends he’s just looking at his reflection in the bakery window covered in flour and he wonders if he’s going mad

Ok but consider: A production of Hamlet that starts with the last scene and then Horatio has to play his role in the rest of the play, but he’s still completely dissolved in tears. Everyone else is oblivious and he has to keep it together for the sake of storytelling, but his voice cracks as he says “I think I saw him yesternight”, regret filling his tone, and he frantically holds on to Hamlet as he begs him not to follow the ghost; he practically chokes on his words as he shouts, “Be rul’d!” And he knows it’s no use, but he’s so reluctant to play his part in this and he can barely keep his emotions at bay. And then the end of the story draws nearer. He takes longer and longer to say his lines. He hesitates, tries to stretch out the little time he’s got left with Hamlet. He doesn’t want to be in this narrative, but he is. Until finally, as Hamlet decides to duel Laertes, Horatio simply gives up. Reluctantly, but knowingly, he accepts the fact that there’s nothing he can do but play his part and relive it all, just to honor Hamlet’s legacy and story. And Hamlet dies in his arms a second time.
