I wonder how many people had their sexual awakening/BDSM discovery moment while watching Harry Houdini’s act. There was no way everyone went for only entertainment’s sake. Edwardian young man staring up at the stage aghast as a beautiful sinewy man struggles and contorts himself to escape his binds, his own face reddening and thinking “Good heavens, I AM a sodomite.”

My Biggest and Most Annoying Fictional Horse Pet Peeve
Big Horses are a Very New Thing and they Likely Didn’t Exist in your Historical and/or Fantasy Settings.
You’ve all seen it in every historical piece of media ever produced. Contrary to popular belief, a big black horse with long legs and long flowing mane is not a widespread or even a particularly old type of horse.
Tumblr media
THIS IS NOT A MEDIEVAL THING. THIS IS NOT EVEN A BAROQUE THING. THIS IS A NINETEENTH CENTURY CITY CARRIAGE HORSE.
All the love to fancy Friesian horses, but your Roman general or Medieval country heroine just really couldn’t, wouldn’t, and for the sake of my mental health shouldn’t have ridden one either.
Big warmblood horses are a Western European and British invention that started popping up somewhere around 1700s when agriculture and warfare changed, and when rich folks wanted Bigger Faster Stronger Thinner race horses. The modern warmblood and the big continental draught both had their first real rise to fame in the 1800s when people started driving Fancy Carriages everywhere, and having the Fanciest Carriage started to mean having the Tallest and Thinnest Horses in the town.
Before mechanised weaponry and heavy artillery all horses used to be small and hardy easy-feeders. Kinda like a donkey but easier to steer and with a back that’s not as nasty and straight to sit on.
SOME REAL MEDIEVAL, ROMAN, OTTOMAN, MONGOL, VIKING, GREEK and WHATEVER HISTORICALLY PLAUSIBLE HORSES FOR YOU:
“Primitive”, native breeds all over the globe tend to be only roughly 120-140 cm (12.0 - 13.3 hh) tall at the withers. They all also look a little something like this:
Mongolian native horse (Around 120-130 at the withers, and decendants of the first ever domesticated horses from central Asia. Still virtually unchanged from Chinggis Khan’s cavalry, ancestor to many Chinese, Japanese and Indian horses, and bred for speed racing and surviving outdoors without the help of humans.)
Tumblr media
Carpathian native horse / Romanian and Polish Hucul Pony (Around 120-150 at the withers, first mentioned in writing during the 400s as wild mountain ponies, depicted before that in Trajanian Roman sculptures, used by the Austro-Hungarian cavalry in the 19th century)
Tumblr media
Middle-Eastern native horse / Caspian Pony (Around 100-130 at the withers, ancestor of the Iranian Asil horse and its decendants, including the famous Arabian and Barb horses, likely been around since Darius I the Great, 5th century BC, and old Persian kings are often depicted riding these midgets)
Tumblr media
Baltic Sea native horse / Icelandic, Finnish, Estonian, Gotland and Nordland horses (Around 120-150 at the withers, descendant of Mongolian horses, used by viking traders in 700-900 AD and taken to Iceland. Later used by the Swedish cavalry in the 30 years war and by the Finnish army in the Second World War, nowadays harness racing and draught horses)
Tumblr media
Siberian native horse / Yakutian pony (Around 120-140 at the withers, related to Baltic and Mongolian horses and at least as old, as well-adapted to Siberian climate as woolly mammoths once were, the hairiest horse there is, used in draught work and herding)
Tumblr media
Mediterranean native horse / Skyros pony, Sardinian Giara, Monterufolino (Around 100-140 at the Withers, used and bred by ancient Greeks for cavalry use, influenced by African and Eastern breeds, further had its own influence on Celtic breeds via Roman Empire, still used by park ranger officers in Italy)
Tumblr media
British Isles’ native horse / various “Mountain & Moorland” pony breeds (Around 100-150 at the withers, brought over and mixed by Celts, Romans and Vikings, base for almost every modern sport pony and the deserving main pony of all your British Medieval settings. Some populations still live as feral herds in the British countryside, used as war mounts, draught horses, mine pit ponies, hunting help and race horses)
Tumblr media
So hey, now you know!

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

Petrified iron ladder, somewhere in France. The ladder most likely underwent the process of calcification. Being laid on the limestone surroundings known to contain calcium carbonate, when the rainwater poured over, it dissolved the carbonate compounds contained in limestone and subsequently soaked the surface of the ladder in calcium and magnesium ions.

I've seen so many takes on how both Hakuba and Kaito deal with the aftermath of Nightmare and the Dark Knight heist.
Chronologically, this actually takes place after they've both appeared in Detective Conan cases, so that means Kaito's dealt with at least two cases in which murders have taken place already. That said, this is different; someone's tried to take advantage of him as Kid/used Jii against him, and when he was figuring out how to get out of the situation the man's son (shown above) distracts him and causes him to fall.
The big thing here is that Kaito is directly responsible for having tried and failed to save someone on one of his heists, and he was clearly distressed when having to make the call to shoot the mask off the man's face so that his son wouldn't realise his father was the bad guy he'd been chasing.
And since Kaito isn't a criminal detective like all the other Gosho boys are, it hits him. Hard. It wasn't even his fault, but I can see him blaming himself - and I've seen people have Hakuba being sympathetic to him after this, because as shown in the panels above, he knows what likely happened, and that as much as Kaitou Kid is a criminal, he never wanted anyone to die.
It's honestly one of the big reasons I'm salty that Hakuba's not in Japan much after his first main appearances, because having him continue to attend school with Kaito and there be this thin line between "detective who wants to catch him and put him in jail" and "friend, who happens to know/has figured out his secret identity and who because of that knows when something is off with him and will give him shit for it or give him space when he needs" is SUCH a good dynamic that they miss out on by having him be absent.

it is so jarring and weird when a fantasy book is like “ok let’s go around the circle and have each character talk about which lgbt umbrella category they identify with” like ok your fantasy world doesn’t have to be feudal europe but can it not be 2023 twitter please

The way you change your immediate reactions to things is that you catch yourself having an uncharitable/bigoted/overly judgmental thought and you catch it and replace it and then you do that a hundred times a day for your whole life and eventually one day like five years later you realize that you think differently now and you’ll always be working on something but that’s how life goes and that’s fine.

Has anyone written an MK fic based on the "Help, I've been turned into a marketable plushie" meme but it's Kaito who got turned into one by Akako and it's either Hakuba or Aoko who finds him like that? Who then takes him around with them through their day because they don't know it's him but they do find it funny to take a Kaitou Kid plushie around with them.
Kid-Plushie getting handcuffed, dragged around, and otherwise manhandled, and Akako trying to get him back from whoever has him but they do NOT want to let go.
For once, Kaito really would like Akako to rescue him, but at the same time he's not sure, because hey at least Hakuba and Aoko just want him arrested, they don't want him "bound to them for eternity as their slave" or whatever it is Akako actually wants at this point.
Tbh now I'm thinking that Hakuba and Aoko are just... sharing him. Trading him off. Hakuba's the one who makes the tiny plushie-size handcuffs. Aoko gets mud over his white suit, and leaves him sat leaning against something and not realising she's left Kaito, the one with a phobia of fish, looking at fish (Hakuba hears about this, and winces; at the same time, he thinks to himself that if Kaito wasn't kid he wouldn't have a plush version of himself anywhere near the things he detests).
Akako taking pity on him and eventually turning him back (sans handcuffs)... only for him to still be with Hakuba at the time, and the very logical-minded detective has to deal with "my classmate who happens to be Kaitou Kid just magically appeared from a... plushie of himself. That I was carrying around with me."
They share a look that suggests neither of them are going to want to speak of this again, and Kaito poofs away.
Aoko asks Hakuba what happened to Kaito-plushie next time they meet, and Hakuba doesn't really know how to tell her even a slightest bit of what he saw, so he just says that it was lost, or confiscated, or something. Anything other than "actually that WAS Kaitou Kid somehow, and your friend here presumably saw various things he was not meant to and had no intention of seeing."
Aoko is disappointed in the loss. She's also angry at Kaito for missing several days off school.
She gets them both to somehow get her a replacement, so that she can vent her anger on it (Kaito is thankful she never did that when it was him in the plush body).

Because I circulated a call to action about it here that got some traction: to those of you who contacted Maine legislators when it counted, thank you— it worked. Maine just passed sanctuary-state-level protection for trans rights.
