What she says: I’m fine
What she means: In Deaf West Spring Awakening they made a lot of very unique blocking and choreography choices that almost all had a deeper meaning to them that really increased the characters depth. Some of them have been explained by the cast but some have not been addressed and I am literally dying because I want to know exactly why they decided to do everything. A small example is why they decided to have Ernsts voice ride a bike around Hanschen during My Junk. But the one that intrigues me the most is that during The Dark I Know Well when all of the girls are on one side, sort of portraying the victims, and the boys are on the other sort of portraying the father or potential assaulters, Ernst runs over from the boys to the side of the girls and starts signing with them but he is still sort of separated from them by being on the stairs and I want to know what they meant by that. I have many theories but I would really like to know what their original intentions were.

do you ever think about how wendla and moritz were chosen to be deaf to symbolize how hearing people (Melchior) can easily manipulate deaf people? or how society doesn’t treat them the same because of their lack of hearing? that Ernst is also deaf but Hanschen treats him the same as a hearing person (asking about the sound of the bells) to show there is not isolation and that he loves him no matter what??? or if it’s the characters who need more support, the voices, to show the depth of emotions inside of them? I have so many questions and no answers

Every Spring Awakening Slime
When I was neck-deep in Spring Awakening a year or so ago, I ended up with a whole pile of slime tutorials, so I thought I’d make a master post. Not all of these versions are equal, but if you’re like I am and really love overanalyzing different versions of the same show, this is for you.
2006 version with the original three leads
2008 version, Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, Blake Bashoff
Deaf West, LA version
1st National Tour, Ben Fankhauser as Ernst & Andy Mientus as Hanschen
Syracuse Summer Theater version
Deaf West, Broadway version, subtitled. Act 1 & Act 2
2005 Lincoln Center workshop audio, including cut songs
Miami Stage Company version. Act 1 & Act 2
Another OBC recording, slightly lower quality
August 2008 version, Matt Doyle, Alexandra Socha, and Gerard Canonico
Broadway version with both Matt Doyle and Blake Bashoff
There are several other versions on YouTube (mostly college productions) but these are, in my opinion, the most notable at the time of my posting this. Enjoy!
