“When Romy [Schneider] established herself as “Romy”, I said to myself that she’s a must-have for this role. But I needed an equally good, renowned actress, someone even more dramatic than Romy. It had to be Lilli Palmer. With Lilli Palmer, we had already made “Devil in Silk”. We got along well and I persuaded her to take on the role. I have to say, they both put in a tremendous performance. In the story, the young one - the school girl - loved the teacher: in other words, Romy loved Palmer.
When you look at the film and if you had been on set, you’d have to admit that life seemed to imitate art. They were drawn to each other. Of course, they had to hide it. I have no idea if there was anything going on between the two, something serious or intimate. All I know is that the atmosphere suggested there was. One could sense that they were not just acting it, but lived it.”
Artur Brauner, producer of “Mädchen in Uniform” (1958)

“ ‘Don’t show me your talent’  became the leitmotif of my next two years. I loved showing my talent; I couldn’t wait to demonstrate how clever I was, how well worth my salary. I had to learn that a good actor, like an iceberg, reveals only a small part of his ability on the surface. You suggest; you don’t serve a platter. You hold back. You don’t expose it all to view. That’s the way to put the audience’s imagination to work. ”
Lilli Palmer (May 24th, 1914 - January 27th, 1986)
