[Star Wars] also gained a deeper love from fans that already exist, i.e. people of color and women. There is a huge [group of them]. Geeky, comic-book-loving people aren’t just white males. I think there’s a bigger level of respect among black female nerds [for those films], because they’re like, “Finally!” Like, “We read them, too! We’re obsessed with them, too!” I think that’s the exciting thing.

Shelly, you are a miracle worker. And a Goddess send from heaven. I’m a waitress in a diner. I’ve never been compared to a goddess before. Well, Shelly, you just don’t know your own value.

lol John Logan literally referred to Vanessa Ives as a “Maltese Falcon” in response to the question of why she was barely seen in the series finale of a show about her
This is what happened when men write for women.  We become symbols, icons, martyrs.  We are not allowed to be flawed but real people, the way men are allowed to be flawed but real people.  Vanessa was never a “human” character to him.  While Ethan, Malcolm, and Victor were allowed to have their antihero struggles and allowed to make it out alive, that was never going to happen for Vanessa.  She was an archetype, the doomed Gothic heroine who would rather sacrifice herself–rather inexplicably, as she’d just surrendered to Dracula last we saw her–than fight and live.  It doesn’t matter that this didn’t make sense after two seasons of struggle.  It doesn’t matter that she’d been given a confidante, a female confidante, this seasons–or that she’d finally sought psychological help.  Vanessa’s choices weren’t supposed to make sense, they were supposed to further John Logan’s almost fetishistic interpretation of the sad but sexy dark heroine, the “Mother of Evil” that LITERALLY all the men who met her on this show coveted at some point, in some way or the other.  What did Patti Lupone say?  All the men on the show want to fuck her or kill her?
(For Ethan, Dracula, Lucifer, Dorian, the man the Creature was–she was a romantic object or a sex object, a woman to be corrupted or saved.  For Malcolm she was a second daughter.  For Victor, she was a surrogate sister, his one confidante and let’s be honest, at times a titillation in her possessed form in season one.  For The Creature, she was the only person who ~understood~ him.  Even the man that murdered Joan Clayton sexually threatened her.)
Really, this is all not too surprising when you remember that this show was made for Eva Green.  Logan last wrote for her as Vesper Lynd in “Casino Royale”.  There too she was the tragic femme fatale, the woman the male lead loved and hated and loved again, ultimately.  He tried to save her, but she was doomed from the start.
It just leaves you with a really bad taste in your mouth.

‘Aren’t you afraid of my darkness, my dear?’ Hades asked with mischief in his eyes.
‘No,‘ Persephone replied, ‘You haven’t even seen mine yet.’

“Being a hero is not turning the other way when you see suffering. You’re a hero if you stand up for a kid being bullied at school. You’re a hero if you pick up litter on the beach. And you’re a hero if you give someone a kind ear and an open heart. It might sound simplistic or cheesy but I honestly believe it.” Deborah Ann Woll for ‘The Laterals’ May 2016.

You’re unhappy. You’re isolated. You think you’re the cause of this unhappiness and are unworthy of affection so you’ve few friends. Recently you lost something you think very important. Your lover, your faith, your family, or all three. You blame yourself for this, so it makes you neurotic, and you don’t sleep and don’t eat, anything healthy anyway. You used to take care of your appearance, but you’ve lost interest in that, so you avoid mirrors. Sunlight bothers you, so you avoid that too, about which you’re guilty because you think it’s unhealthy and even immoral not to like the sun. You’re not a woman of convention or you wouldn’t be here, but you like to pretend you are so people don’t notice you. But you sometimes like that as well and can dress to draw the eye. But then you think the men who look at you are fools, or worse, to be taken in by such an obvious outward show. So instead, you’re drawn to dark, complicated, impossible men, assuring your own unhappiness and isolation because, after all, you’re happiest alone. But not even then, because you can’t stop thinking about what you’ve lost, again for which you blame yourself. So the cycle goes on, the snake eating its own tail.
