Yeah ok you went to Harvard or some shit but have you ever taken a community college class? That’s where the baby shit ends and the real education begins. Pull up your big boy pants, sit down next to an ex-con, a retired mom of 3 adult kids, and a new high school graduate who works two jobs yet still worries about creasing his sneakers, and do a lesson in a decrepit room they can’t remodel for “asbestos reasons” while a guy with a maters or a PhD who dropped out of college the first time he went and still tours with his metal and/or folk band when he can intersperse lesson material with crazy life stories about how his father remarried a woman younger than he is and occasionally offers to, idk, light something on fire or something like that.
Watch a woman in her 30s with a job harass berate yell at and verbally abuse your favorite (genuinely incredible) professor so bad a different professor offers to walk her to and from her classes in case she felt unsafe because that woman literally chased her out of the hall and back into the classroom screaming at her and accusing her of awful shit, and all because the make up time the professor was offering her so she could re-take a test she missed didn’t work for her. Get invited to the military retirement party of an older woman vet in your class who you barely know who’s around 4’10 and always wears bright pink lipstick. Listen to a bright young guy in his 20s explain how he missed last class because his lung collapsed and he had to go to the hospital.
Take a film class where the professor doesn’t give clear instructions, lessons on even the most basic basics of film making, cameras, equipment, or anything at all, he just sends you and your group project teammates you're stick with for the whole semester out around campus with only your phones to “film something” for the assignments, so you have the guy who does latte art at his barista job man the “camera” (phone) because he has the steadiest hands. He does good work so we respect when he drifts off and silently eats beans off of random bushes on campus that he swears are edible. Take a class with a stoner surfer dude TA who refers to all the students as “earthlings” and only talks about Hawaii. Take a class with a professor so life changingly good it totally reshapes your entire perspective on compassion and education and your own capabilities. Pass a few classes. Fail a few classes. That’s a real education.

“I hope you live without the need to dominate, and without the need to be dominated. I hope you are never victims, but I hope you have no power over other people. And when you fail, and are defeated, and in pain, and in the dark, then I hope you will remember that darkness is your country, where you live, where no wars are fought and no wars are won, but where the future is. Our roots are in the dark; the earth is our country. Why did we look up for blessing — instead of around, and down? What hope we have lies there. Not in the sky full of orbiting spy-eyes and weaponry, but in the earth we have looked down upon. Not from above, but from below. Not in the light that blinds, but in the dark that nourishes, where human beings grow human souls.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, “A Left-Handed Commencement Address” (Mills College, 1983)

Epistemicide can be broadly defined as the destruction of knowledge systems and the knowledge that they generate. The Latin American sociologist Ramón Grosfoguel explains how epistemicide played a crucial role in Europe's colonization of the rest of the world, including the settler colonization of the Americas. It granted European philosophy an “epistemic privilege,” allowing it to become the “new foundation of knowledge in the modern/colonial world.”
In other words, it created a world in which only knowledge produced by European colonists and settlers was deemed legitimate, while colonized societies were compelled to construct new systems from scratch — often mirroring those of their colonizers — because their own systems had been destroyed. As a result, the structural conditions of knowledge production that facilitated the mechanisms of their colonialization also imposed constraints on their liberation.
