Grand Canyon trip
So, this one is a bit different. Happened a little before class actually started. But it’s so cool, I really wanted to share.
So My whole life I’d wanted to see the Canyon, (yeah Vegas is cool too) but from a young age I’ve been fascinated by the American South West. I love deserts, or anywhere dry for that matter. I’m stuck in Florida because my Beautiful partner, Rachel works for the National Guard, doing hero stuff all the time. So, being sympathetic to my plight, while on a training event in Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, she basically planned out this whole vacation for us, and all I had to do was fly down. So hell yeah I did. Took a week off work and jumped on a plane.
Now, I’ve been to Nevada/SoCal before, on NTC rotations. But I’ve never been in the actual City (Vegas). Talk about culture shock, SO MUCH going on, people from EVERYWHERE all the time. But you can do like, whatever you want. But I hate crowds, so, not my scene. But I did cup David’s scrotum (his balls) at Casers Palace #winning.
Tumblr media
But my real treat was getting to see the Canyon. We went to Arizona, (which is BEAUTIFUL btw) and got to see one of the 7 wonders of the world. And folks, I can’t tell you how awesome it was. Like you know it’s big, but tv doesn’t do it justice. Books can only describe it’s vast presence. But to be there, was amazing.

So here’s some pics (threw in a couple of Hoover dam as well) hope you enjoy.

Did Somebody Say Savannah???
Okay so, Blogging part two of laying this out. (I wasn’t going to do this, But the Professor has been mad cool with us...and seeing how you (fellow student) and he are going to be the only ones reading these, I figured why not, let it all out there. So, me, the old lady and our mutual couple friends, Jami and Kevin decided to take on Savannah. See, we got these cool discounts at the hotel on the military base nearby and decided to spend the weekend for our friend Kevin’s birthday. Now, I’ve never been to Savannah mind you. And outside of Las Vegas I’ve not experienced a place where you can carry your drinks around and hop bar to bar (like literally hopping distance from each other. And the scenery was to die for, literally right by the water. Everything was within Uber distance from the base. If you wanna pay a little more, there’s spots right by the main strips at the water where you can stay and be walking distance from most of the bars. Below are some pics of us after a few dozen Jell-O shots and this really cool restaurant that serves a FABULOUS drink.(details below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall we had a blast! And I KNOW I was supposed to go there for this awesome restaurant the professor told us about for cool points right? But what happened was...like 15 shots later, I had forgotten why I was even there in the first place and ended up at this place (listed above) taking oyster shots. Like a Bloody Mary oyster combo that the Waitress kept buying for me and my beautiful lady. So, not a total loss I hope. Anyways, love Savannah, definitely going back and if you decide to go, try the oyster shots. 100% worth it.

Beach Vacay 2k19
So, I know this one’s a bit late arriving, but here it is. My blog from Panama City Beach. Well, it’s started back in June, my old lady hits me up with, “whatcha doin this weekend?” And I’m like, “Well, I was hoping you.” And she’s all like, “blehh blehh A-hole we’re going to Panama City” And my first thought was something like, uhhhh is there even a Beach left after the hurricane (Lol the answer is yes, but not a lot of anything else) anyways, we took off down there, got this super beautiful Condo for the weekend. Enjoyed
Tumblr media
Enjoyed some kick ass food, though to be honest I was kinda tipsy and everything tastes good when you’re buzzed. It was a beautiful weekend. Went to the local Walmart (which is still standing) and bought a pair of 10$ snorkel and masks (best investment ever) and she got to swim with Manta rays, completely made her weekend. I caught this crab, and uhhh he pinched the shit out of me lol
Tumblr media
But overall had a bad ass time. I’d 10/10 recommend to anyone wanting some beach time. Especially now since school started back, there will be ALOT less crowds and traffic near the beaches. I spent half of my Saturday drinking Corona, listening to Jimmy Buffet from my balcony. Was a total win in my book. I hope all of y’all had a beautiful Summer as well. Here some pics, hope y’all enjoy.(yes she flexes in EVERY pic 🙄😂)

My Culture.
(Look Ma, my first blog!)
Okay, if you’re reading this you’re either my Professor, someone in my class or you’ve stumbled across the dark region of Tumblr and found my blog. Whatever your origin, welcome, I hope you enjoy the material.
Tumblr media
(Above illustrated: Me discovering Tumblr for the first time)
My childhood is a subject that I don’t share with everyone. It’s a dark and troubled past that I choose to not delve into often. However, your upbringing is what shapes you as a person so I will briefing describe my experience so you can understand how it shaped my culture.
I was raised by radical evangelicals. Extremists by the very definition of the word. It wasn’t enough to force their own opinions on you, the require complete and total belief from me. Not believe based off of experience or spiritual realization. They taught through fear, pressuring, and exile from the family and the church if you didn’t comply with their version of the “truth”.
I was homeschooled my whole life, so I wasn’t exposed much to the outside world until I got a job on weekends laying sod with family friends when I was 15. It was the first time I hadn’t been supervised by my parents forcing their beliefs on me. I saw people that weren’t part of our church, and who all shared different beliefs. They weren't shamed for their thoughts and feelings, it was celebrated. They could share their opinion without fear. And what stuck with me the most is that they all led HAPPY LIVES. I did not. When I would go home from those long days working, I would dream of this seemingly unattainable life and hunger for freedoms I was forced to think would cost me my soul. So what is freedom worth to you reader? Is it worth your soul? Your family? Your culture? I thought so. So at 17 I found my voice. I became my own person.
Needless to say I was no longer welcome. Taking my few belongings I could carry I went to live with my uncle. I hadn't been around him since I was a young child due to his differing views from my parents. I had finally done it. I was finally my own person. Free. I was discovering what the world was and the role I would play in it.
I knew myself well enough to know that I wouldn’t have been able to work a regular 9 to 5 job. I had little skill that I could monetize. What I did have was discipline, drive, and the desire to do the most badass thing I could think of at the time....Join the Marine Corps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those of you who don’t know, the Marines are kinda cult-like. They pride themselves in a 3 step program they use in boot camp.
Step 1: Take away your identity.
Step 2: Break you down.
Step 3: Build you up as a Marine.
The issue that I had with bootcamp, is that the same strategies they used there to brainwash a recruit into a Marine was what I had grown up with my whole life. I found myself in the same situation I had just escaped. I still did the job, and I did it well, but I never “drank the Kool-Aid”. It was too important for me to keep my individuality. The overall outcome what that I got to do some cool stuff, got a cool title, but I was still left wanting more. With the Marine Corps downsizing under a new political climate I was not able to do reenlist under the job I wanted. So I looked elsewhere. I reached out to the Army and in less than 3 months I was at Fort Benning training to become an Infantryman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Army I found what I was craving from the Marines. I found a close family-bond with my fellow soldiers, my brothers. To succeed all that was needed was “to show up at the right place, at the right time, with the right uniform, and to not be a fat piece of shit.” Regardless of you personal opinions or “Esprit de Corps” I could succeed as an individual. I got what I needed from the Army. I got to travel the world, hang out with my brothers, make lifelong memories all while being accepted and embraced for my own individuality and opinions. Basically, I came, saw, and conquered. I was ready to put roots down somewhere. I had moved every few years since I was 17, it was time to create a home for myself.
I settled down in Florida with my wonderful girlfriend Rachel. I applied to all sorts of jobs, all involving either security or law enforcement. I felt that these types of jobs would suit my skillset best. The Baker Correctional Institute contacted me first and I accepted the job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a year of working at a prison I realized this is not where I want to retire. I didn’t feel comfortable in an environment where control and isolation was the name of the game. The administration there was so used to controlling the inmates every living moment that they became comfortable with doing that to the officers as well. I began to feel like I was serving as much of a sentence as the inmates I was guarding.
My culture isn’t something that was handed down throughout the generations. It’s not some quaint tradition my family does on Christmas. It’s not my family background, the clothes I wear, or the sports I like. It’s something completely different that I carved out for myself. My culture is personal freedom. The Freedom to forge my own path. To voice my own opinion and see the world through my own eyes. My culture is the freedom of living, not just existing. That freedom was worth everything, my “family”, my life and even my own soul. But in the end, all it cost me was overcoming the fear of losing, and in return, I was rewarded with own culture. And to me, that’s everything.
What is your culture worth to you?
