““Speak to the Gods. Ancient prayers are good. So are contemporary prayers written by priests and devotees. So are your own words that express the yearnings of your heart. Calling Them by names, titles, and epithets [… But] remember the principle of reciprocity: if you expect to receive, you should expect to give. Be careful what you offer. If you say “I’ll do whatever you want me to do” They may take you up on it in ways you never considered.”

Expanded Moon Phase Cheat Sheet
This is a much longer version of my original Moon Phase Cheat Sheet - with more phases, terms, and definitions for your quick and easy magical reference!
WAXING: These are the phases when the Moon appears to be growing. This period is divided into the First Quarter and Second Quarter, and takes about 14 days.
Good For: Drawing things towards you, increasing
New Moon: This is when the moon is just a sliver in the sky. From here, the Moon takes about 14 days to reach Full. (First Quarter)
Good For: New beginnings, potential, starts
Crescent Moon: When the Moon is a visible crescent in the sky - “The Moon of Continuing Dedication”. (First Quarter)
Good For: Treated magically like the New Moon.
Waxing Half-Moon: When the moon is half full, and growing. Occurs about a week after the New Moon. (Second Quarter)
Good For: Progressing from verbal to thought magic, plans forming into actualities.
Gibbous Moon: The last slip-thread before the Moon is full. (Second Quarter)
Good For: Deep love spells, relationships, peak emotions.
FULL MOON: This one’s self-explanatory! The Moon  remains looking Full for about 2 to 3 days, though purists choose to work magick only on the peak day. It is considered part of the Second Quarter by some.
Good For: The Full Moon is considered the most powerful Moon, due to it shining at full brightness. Many Witches choose to commemorate the occasion with a ritual or Esbat, and even more use this moon for their main spellcraft.
WANING: The phases when the Moon appears to be dissapearing. This period is divided into the Third and Fourth Quarters, and includes the Dark Moon. The Moon takes another 14 or so days to complete its cycle.
Good For: Removing, drawing away, banishing, and cleansing
Third Quarter: The waning quarter after the Full Moon. (Third Quarter)
Good For: Dissolving problems, letting go, endings, and detoxifying
Disseminating Moon: The beginning of the Moon dissappearing. (Third Quarter)
Good For:  Breaking bad habits, legal matters, cleansing
Waning Half-Moon: When the Moon is half light and half dark in the circle, and getting darker. (Fourth Quarter)
Good For: Reflection, meditative thought, ridding self of unwanted things
Waning Crescent Moon: The last slip of moon before it grows fully dark. (Fourth Quarter)
Good For: Serious issues, quitting something, understanding unfathomed elements
Dark Moon: The period of time when the Moon is completely invisible in the sky. For our course, this is considered the last part of the Moon’s cycle (some traditions count it as the first – neither is wrong). (Fourth Quarter)
Good For: Protection, wisdom, self-honoring rituals, purificaton, banishing
Apply in accordance with your magical intent, and use the lunar tides to your advantage. :>

Reworking Gendered Energies
Tumblr media
When getting started with magic, especially magic influenced by Wicca, nearly everything is immediately split into a gender binary. To many people, this system is reductive, exclusionary, and sorely outdated. Here’s how we can rework it and make it useful.
Projective vs. Receptive
When a spell ingredient is listed as masculine or feminine, it rarely has anything to do with actual gender. Reducing the idea to its root, we find that gendering an ingredient is shorthand for depicting the way its energy moves, projective or receptive.
Projective energies, formerly deemed masculine, work their magic by going out from the source and changing things. They banish, they influence, they alter.
Receptive energies, the feminine, draw things in. They work their magic by serving as a beacon/sponge. They attract, they collect, and they accumulate.
With this in mind, we can swap out gender for these meanings and have an extra layer of nuance to our spells. If our spell is focused on, say, drawing in wealth (receptive,) we can use ingredients that focus on bringing the outside in. If we’re sending out influence to convince somebody to give us that new job (projective,) then we can focus on ingredients that reach out. Maybe your spell wants to cast out and bring in, and you can use a balance.
This can also work for deciding the type of spell you’re doing. Think of how candles and wands are typically “masculine” and cups/chalices are “feminine.” To me, that sounds a lot like typical candle spells are projective and jar spells are receptive.
Traditional, binary ideas of gender have a shrinking place in modern day witchcraft. That said, if we can take the gendering that’s already been done and rework it to something more inclusive and more useful, then we can all benefit. What’s nice is that the past few decades of aggressively gendering everything means half the work of deciding which-herb-is-which is already done for us; all we have to do is change our vocabulary.

"Hestia and Hermes are not husband and woman, nor brother and sister, nor mother and son either. They are neighbors, or better: friends. Where Hermes loiters is Hestia never far. Where Hestia stays, Hermes can appear at any moment."

I'm sorry to burst some people's bubble, but Samhain isn't a secular holiday.
It was mainstreamed in witch circles by Wiccans, and before that it was (and still is) a neo-druid holiday. Druidry is a spirituality, religion, and lifestyle.
You can celebrate Samhain, but please don't erase where it came from.
Also, it's pronounced Saa-wn.

The simple message of Chaos Magic is that, what is fundamental to magic is the actual doing of it—that like sex, no amount of theorising and intellectualisation can substitute for the actual experience.
