These duties however, were nothing new for Maddy. They had long been the expendable product for their cousin and grandmother.
It's part of why when Yzla first became a part of the Overgrowth, she was relieved. It had lessened their duties to the family.
The history of the Overgrowth has always been a messy one.
As they were growing their influence, there would be deals made to other factions or possessions that would be temporarily sold. And in the beginning, they didn't even have a good way to test their products.
This all, of course, fell onto Maddy before stretching to the younger cousins until the Overgrowth finally acquired workers who fulfilled these purposes.

more than anything
Here is angst. Of course it where Harriet is. That's her spotlight.
Sammy sat alone in the cabin, double checking inventory counts and crew reports. The words ever so slightly swimming. It was going on 48 hours with no rest in sight for him. Not when Harriet had disappeared again.
She will be back, she always is. Her bloodshot blown out eyes, ever so slightly slurred words, and bruises marking her skin will always confirm to him where she was. As if Diego disappearing at the same time hadn’t already. He always followed her after all.
Until then he’ll pick up the slack. He always did. One day she’ll pay him back.
The door creaked open.
There she is. She looks like a wreck, hair mussed up, stains against her shirt, bruises scattered around her neck. She looked exactly as he thought she would.
“What the fuck are you doing, Sammy? Get away from my desk.” She sneered, stumbling towards him.
“I’m doing your job. Like I’m supposed to do. A first mate is supposed to step up when the captain can’t. That’s why you made me your first mate. Or are you too drunk and high to remember that?”
“Fuck You.” She spat, not having a good rebuttal for his accurate accusations.
He simply stared at her, unamused, before standing up. He is nothing compared to her, five foot three and wiry to her 5 '11 and pure muscle, yet he was just as much of a force of nature as she was. Turning, Sammy forced her into the chair, giving her a pointed glare before grabbing a waterskin.
“Drink. Lord knows you need it.”
“Oh please. There’s no god here that cares.”
All he did was look at her before forcing the waterskin into her hand and up to her mouth, wrestling her until he could tilt her head back and pinch her nose shut, forcing her to drink. When he was satisfied that she had drunk enough he relented, taking a step back to avoid the spitting and the swings coming for his face. She glared at him with all her might.
“Why you little-”
“Careful Harriet, you’re beginning to sound like your father.”
She stopped. Chest heaving. She froze, reevaluating her life. That was her worst fear and he knew it. Which is why she decided to hit back just as hard.
If he was gonna play dirty why couldn’t she?
“Like you’re much better. You’re in here, cleaning up my mess. Making everything to MY preference. When was the last time you did anything that wasn’t for me, huh Sammy? How’s Marya? Or your precious little brothers? How can you protect anyone if you are always here? Catering to. My. Every, Need.”
“That’s it. It’s time for bed Harriet.”
He grabbed her, his grip bruising on her arm, dragging her to her bedroom. Slamming the door open, not caring how loud he was. It’s not like anyone heard, and if they did they know better than to question the noises coming from Harriet’s quarters. He shoved her towards the bed, taking her sword off her in the same motion. It was easy considering just how much practice he’s had doing so.
She started stalking towards him before tripping on a loose board. Taking his chance, Sammy strong armed her into bed.
“Now sleep. I don’t want to have to break out the restraints again. I’m sure you wouldn’t like that either.”
Harriet gave one last glare before turning and curling into herself. She knew that he would, Sammy always stuck to his threats. Besides, she was feeling tired. She was doing this on her accord you see. Saammy could never force her to do anything she didn’t want to do, she lied to herself.
Sammy, seeing that she was going to listen for once, returned to the office. The reports are even messier than they were earlier. His work now was going to take even longer. It was going to be another all-nighter getting all of these finished. Pushing Harriet’s words out of his head, he returned to writing.
There was no room for emotion or doubt when he needed to create some form of stability for the crew.
He had work to do.

more than anything
This is the Hurt/Comfort version, the second one will becoming soon, but both are Canon. They both happen often for him, afterall.
Sammy looked up, blinking spots out of his eyes, before he saw it. The mop of white hair. One of his brothers, shaking, dried tears on his cheeks.
“Silas? What’s wrong?” His voice was soft, a tone reserved only for his brothers.
Silas’s face twisted, hands wringing together before he rushed forward at a nod from Sammy.
His voice was quiet, nearly silent and cracking as the words stumbled out. “I saw her again. Saw it again.”
Sammy’s face fell, sadness creeping into his eyes at the reminder, before opening his arms, waiting for his brother to enter them before squeezing him tight. It was always hard to remember their mother. The bittersweet of the last person who had protected them. It didn’t help that the anniversary was coming up. The twins had it worse, having been what she was defending when she was killed. He hadn’t been there to protect them, had failed at the thing their mother had drilled into him since before they were even born. Even after all these years, his mother still haunted him. Whispers of pride and disgust mixing in his ears.
Silas clinged to him, tears returning to his eyes, a sob breaking free now that he felt safe.
He pulled the younger into his lap, whispering sweet nothings. “It’s okay. You’re not there anymore. I’m here now.”
His younger brother hid his face and shrunk into him, as if trying to disappear from the world.
“Would you like to stay while I finish these reports?” Feeling a nod against his neck, Sammy returned to his work.
He pored over everything, moving quickly yet effectively. His brother is a great motivator for finishing. Checking over the last of his notes, he tucked everything away according to Harriet’s system. She’ll end up “checking over it” later before implementing the necessary changes. It’s what they always did. She’s the captain afterall, the crew can’t know how much Sammy’s pulling the strings. They would mutiny, the blood too tempting for the sharks that walk across their planks.
Satisfied, Sammy stood up, making sure his now sleeping brother was secure in his arms as he walked towards his quarters where Sebastian currently slept. Well, where he assumed he was sleeping, because when he entered the room sleepy eyes blinked open.
“Sammy? Is that- is that you? Where’s Silas?”
“Shh, We are both right here Seb. It’s okay. Go back to sleep, okay?”
Watery eyes stared into his as he set Silas down. A hand reaching out for him.
“Stay. Don’t go. Please. I- I miss you.”
His heart broke a little. He had been so stressed out due to Harriet, he had neglected his brothers. He was no better than his father.
“I’m not leaving. I’ll be right here all night.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Sebastian’s hand retracted as Sammy laid beside his brothers, reaching over Silas to touch the youngest of them all, reassuring them both. Harriet may return at any moment, yet even she would understand that they came first. Family always came first.

Overgrowth
Face: Madailéin ‘Mad Maddy’ Mim
Second: Maeve Mim
Assorted Members: Leighton Rourke, Yzla, Zevon, Reza of Agrabah, Malvina Mim
The Overgrowth runs the forested area not already claimed by the Crimson Army. They don’t get many territory disputes due to their control over illicit substances and their willingness to cut off anyone who crosses them.
The Overgrowth, while not having that much power, is seen as a necessity. They are the only ones with the knowledge of how to cook drugs and make alcohol. If anyone seems to be gaining said knowledge, they either quickly forget, disappear, or join the Overgrowth itself.

Leader: Malady ‘Mal’
Second in Command: Jahlil ‘Jay’ of Agrabah
Assorted Members: Carlos de Vil, Evangelina ‘Evie’ Metternich
The Dragon’s Blood controls the marketplace, making them one of the most dangerous gangs in terms of goods control. Despite being the smallest gang, they regularly defend their territory and are the most common to steal territory from other gangs.

First Commander: Rosa Hearts
Known Assorted Members: Hou Jia, Zhu Rong, Vladivoj Hearts, Jared Hearts, Kazimíra Hearts, Mečislav(a) Hearts
The Crimson Army runs all the territory that the Huns and the Queen of Hearts live in.
Not much is known about the Crimson Army’s inner workings or members, with the only known members being the Heart Siblings or messengers. It is safe to assume that all Huns are associated with the gang. They most likely have the most members of any of the gangs, making their neutrality incredibly valuable amongst other gangs.
Do Not Interfere. The Crimson Army is content to rule their own and will not participate in any gang disputes unless provoked.
