Rayla hugging Amaya was honestly such a lovely scene. Rayla was so hesitant, but she desperately needed a parents love right then, and all four of the elves who could claim that title are lost to her right now. And here’s Amaya, Callum and Ezran’s Amaya. General Amaya, who tried to kill her when they first met. Who thought the worst of her. Here’s Amaya, saying she reminds her of her. Trying to help her. The fact it’s Amaya who initiated this, is choosing to reach out to Rayla, choosing to take this moment to apologise. Amaya who is seeing this young elf, not as a monster like she did all those years ago, but as a young woman who’s lost. Who needs some guidance and a reassuring touch. A nudge in the right direction. The fact that Rayla wants this hug; the fact that Amaya is willing to give it. It’s such a lovely little scene, for both characters

Excellent review! I have to say I agree with pretty much every point you make. I don't know if this counts as a downside, but after probably 50 hours and beyond, I always had a surpluss of money and ether that I didn't have any use for. And I with the chain attack animations were skippable, especially with the new challenge mode in the DLC. Chain attacks take up time, but you're not allowed to skip any of it and you don't even get to see the timer while you're in a chain attack. I love the animations, but they do get repetitive after awhile and consume a lot of time.

My other little nitpick is the lack of clothing customization. You unlock all these different classes and cool new outfits but the character's base clothing always stays the same and you often only get a piece of the new outfit. It wish the tops, bottoms, and shoes were all separate pieces you could mix and match, and that the base underclothing was optional. Confession: I always played with Barbies as a kid and I really like dressing up characters and trying different outfits. At least Xenoblade 3's options were better than having NO options in Xenoblade 2.

Other than those nitpicks and everything else you mentioned, I adore this game! I've spent over 200 hours playing it and I haven't even touched New Game + or finished all the side quests 😅

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Review: The Best of Both Worlds

Monolith Soft knows a lot about ambition. From their early days as a game developer, they’ve always strived for more. With ambition however, there’s often compromise. For co-founder Testuya Takahashi, his vision has often been unfulfilled despite his best efforts. From Xenogears’ infamous second disc, to Xenosaga being cancelled partway through the six planned entries, and even with Nintendo’s own Xenoblade franchise there have been issues that held the games back. Xenoblade Chronicles wasn’t initially localized outside of Japan, Xenoblade Chronicles X was both on the ill-fated Wii U, but also had re-writes that severely impacted the story, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was made with a skeleton crew, as Monolith Soft was also assisting with two major Nintendo games (Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2) that would launch in the same year. Despite all the hardship, Xenoblade has become a bona-fide franchise and with the latest release, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, we might be getting a look at Monolith Soft when the shackles can finally release and they can complete their vision without compromise.

I haven't seen any tdp content besides the 3 seasons on netflix, what is this through the moon thing I'm seeing and how do I access it?

Hello, welcome, and thanks for the follow! TDP keeps its core stuff in the TV show, so anything else is a fun bonus to help fuel speculation for the fandom and worldbuilding expansions in small ways (food, climate, some slight cultural stuff, etc).

That said, TDP does have a lot of extra material running around, all of which are canon (or close enough in the case of the novelizations).

Tales of Xadia, a full-fledged RRPG that is probably the biggest lore drop we've had so far. Canon and with a lot of those fun details I was alluding to earlier, like little folklore stories in each of the kingdoms, other types of dragons, stuff like that.

Book One: Moon and Book Two: Sky novelizations. Some character details are changed (a couple of wonky ages, Moonshadow elves being vegetarians) or scenes, but generally canon.

Callum's Spellbook, a sweet silly version of his sketch/spellbook from the show, featuring little character profiles and notes from each of the characters, and so much gushing about Rayla, bless his soul.

However, what you're talking about is Through the Moon, a canon graphic novel and probably the most important canon supplement we've got so far. It's set about a month after S3 and focuses primarily on Rayla's declining mental health as she mourns her parents and becomes worried that perhaps Viren survived, as well as her relationship with Callum. I've compiled the most important / plot relevant pages here (which is largely just the last two pages of the graphic novel itself, and earlier pages included for context). The graphic novel largely just shows the lead-up to why Rayla is not in the first episode of S4, but I trust the show will explain that on its own terms, as 4x01 just establishes the fact she's absent so far, not why.

The other prominent graphic novel came out just this past July (so almost a month ago!) and is called Bloodmoon Huntress. It's a prequel focusing on young Rayla and how she, Ethari, and Runaan became a family. There's a character here who may appear later on in the series, but we don't know if it'll be in the show or in some other way.

The graphic novels are available on Amazon, Kindle (that's what I have bc it's cheaper and I wanted to edit / screencap them accordingly), and most book sites for online or in-person purchase. I also think there's a copy floating around online, but I haven't had to go looking, so I'm not sure!

There are also the recent short stories (under tdp shorts) set during the timeskip between S3 and S4, with Callum's taking place after Rayla's departure in Through the Moon. You can read each of them here in order of release:

Patience: Aaravos focused

The Queen's Soul: Janai focused

Inheritance: Callum focused

The Royal Council: Ezran focused

Just a reaffirmation that none of this is required reading, but the Rayllum and Ruthari fandoms, respectively, talk quite a bit about Through The Moon and Bloodmoon Huntress for obvious reasons.

GOODBYE SCENE WITH GREN:

[Puts her finger on Gren’s lips, shushing him]

“I trust you, you’ve been my voice. Now you will become my hands to save the boys.”

[General Amaya is standing atop the wall, watching the border through a monocular. She narrows her eyes, and turns to the solider standing behind her.]

“I see elves at the border.” [points in the direction of the border]

Soldier: “General Amaya, we’ve searched everywhere and there’s been no sign of the elves. I think it’s safe to conclude that the outpost on the Xadian side remains secret.” [Points] There, look! The signal! The outpost is secure.”

[Amaya turns & looks again through the monocular. She narrows her eyes, and turns back to the soldier.]

“No, something’s wrong. Set up a search party.”

AMBUSH SCENE AT THE OUTPOST

[The outpost soldier subtly signs “danger” to warn Amaya.]

S2: EP 5

THE PREPARATION SCENE BEFORE GOING TO KILL THE MAGMA TITAN

[Amaya nudges Sarai] “Haha that’s signing, get it?” [Sarai laughs in response]

This is in reference to Harrow’s hand gestures. Harrow is not using sign language, but Amaya was making the joke to Sarai that Harrow was “signing” because he was gesturing a lot, & perhaps also bc sometimes hand gestures can be mistaken for sign language.

(Tbh this brought to mind multiple instances where I thought I saw someone signing at a glance, but it turned out that they were just using hand gestures while talking.)

EDIT: It’s been brought to my attention that there are some people who think that this joke was in fact a dirty one such as the “that’s what she said” type. I would like to clarify.

Honestly, if you do not know ASL then I would ask for you to please refrain from making assumptions. What she signed in that particular scene is a bit difficult to translate to English. It’s important to remember that ASL is a separate language with its own linguistic rules. ASL can’t really be translated to English perfectly– it’s meant to be a visual language, not written/spoken. Amaya’s exact signing was this: [nudges Sarai] “ha ha, that[’s] sign[ing]” Then here she uses a hand sign that means “oh I see” (typically used to show that you’re paying attention/listening), but could also convey “ah! oh i see” (picture a light bulb turning on, like you’ve understood something), etc. The emotion that is conveyed via that hand sign depends on the facial expressions used.

So: “ha ha, that[’s] sign[ing] oh-i-see”.

For it to make sense in English, I put down “get it?”.

In other words, it’s like she jokingly said “Haha, I see he’s signing!”.

It’s clear that she was making a joke about Harrow gesticulating. Amaya, as a Deaf person, is very visual. She relies on her eyes (and her hands) all the time. So naturally, Harrow using large hand gestures would stand out to her.

S2: EP 6

SCENE AFTER THE MAGMA TITAN‘S DEFEAT

[Sarai rushes to Amaya & catches her before she falls to the ground.]

A: “How do I look?” [points at the new scar on her face] {alternatively: “How does my face look?”}

S: “Not great, but you should see the other guy.”

AMAYA & GREN REUNION SCENE AT THE BREACH

[Gren shows up. Amaya & Gren are reunited; she runs to greet Gren and spins him into a hug. She then examines his face, tilting his chin slightly. She strokes her chin, and points at his beard.] Gren: [laughs] “We have a lot to talk about.” [The soldier interrupts their reunion and asks about the reinforcements]

Gren: “There will be no reinforcements. Lord Viren has been captured for treason.”

Amaya: [Rolls her eyes] “Wow.”

S3: E8

AMAYA & CALLUM REUNION SCENE

Callum: [glances at Amaya & Janai] “Uh, looks like you have an elf friend now, too?”

Janai: [crosses her arms] “We are not… friends. She is my prisoner.”

Amaya: [smirks] “She thinks I’m cute. She just doesn’t admit it yet.”

**{Alternative translation: “She doesn’t want to admit it yet”. I went with the above because Amaya did not sign DON’T-WANT, and so the above translation remains the most similar to her signing. Another option is “She’s just not admitting it”, which would have worked too.}**

S3: E9

BATTLE SCENE [Mutated!Kasef grabs Amaya by the throat and throws her at Janai. She crashes into her, and Janai catches her as they both fall.] Amaya: [Glances up at Janai] “I’m okay.”

[Janai hands her to Soren. Soren slings her arm across his shoulder to support her as they both walk away.]
