Where To Eat This New York City Restaurant Week - Forbes
Outside The Russian Tea Room Photographer: Daniel Barry/Bloomberg News.BLOOMBERG NEWS
New York City Restaurant Week returns on January 21, offering two-course lunches for $26 and three-course dinners for $42 at hundreds of restaurants across the city. Running through February 8, the twice-yearly stretch of specials not only allows diners to grab a seat at an otherwise prohibitively expensive eatery, but also brings out some creative seasonal specials from kitchens eager to celebrate Restaurant Week. Yes, the ingredients featured on the prix-fixe menus are occasionally lower in price than standard menu items, but the quality and technique with which they are prepared is identical to the standard any diner should expect. Book a table at one of these New York City restaurants for a great deal this winter.
The Russian Tea Room
Restaurant Week is as good an excuse as any to check out an iconic Manhattan spot. This Midtown West restaurant will offer both lunch and dinner specials, highlighting their Eastern European favorites, like the famous Tea Room Red Borscht, Goat Cheese and Wild Mushroom Blinchik, Boeuf a la Stroganoff and more.
Strip House
A steak dinner in Manhattan doesn't often come cheap, but both the downtown and midtown Strip House locations will be offering lunch and dinner, with a dry aged 8 oz New York Strip served at each meal, as well as other options like braised short rib gnocchi, salmon carpaccio, a wagyu burger and more.
21 Club
Another classic spot to check off the list, this historic speakeasy will host lunch and dinner in its bar room, with menu items including the signature 21 Caesar salad, coq au vin and New York cheesecake with spiced strawberry compote and almond streusel for dessert.
Outside the historic 21 ClubGetty
Kingside
Dinner at this midtown bistro during Restaurant Week is the perfect pre-Broadway option or after work treat. Menu options will include sunchoke bisque, kampachi crudo, winter leaves salad, braised short rib with soft polenta, a sushi platter and pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.
Irvington
Just above Union Square, Irvington will serve both lunch and dinner menus. Starters will include options like burrata with citrus and fennel salad or mushroom bisque with spiced goat cheese, with mains like house-made tagliatelle in kale and walnut pesto and pan-roasted salmon with farro.
Tavern On The Green
Warm up after a brisk walk through Central Park at Tavern On The Green, where the fireplace will be roaring and winter restaurant week specials will include pan roasted monkfish medallions in minestrone sauce, grilled skirt steak milanese and "our roasted carrot entree" composed of rosemary roasted carrots, carrot ginger purée and watercress pesto.
Nobu Downtown
The famous celebrity-backed Japanese restaurant has selected menu favorites for its restaurant week lunch, served in the bar and lounge. Options will include tuna sashimi salad with Matsuhisa dressing , yellowtail sashimi, black cod with eggplant miso, rock shrimp tempura in creamy spicy sauce, as well as more signature dishes.

Harassed by Steve Croman? Checks in the mail
We sent the notorious landlord Steven Croman to jail for breaking the law. Now, his tenants are also getting the restitution they deserve after enduring years of harassment. The first round of payments from our unprecedented $8M settlement are in the mail. https://t.co/9EjRwLi1DK pic.twitter.com/r4KBiRxNLt
— NY AG Underwood (@NewYorkStateAG) December 13, 2018
New York AG Barbara Underwood announced yesterday that the first checks are in the mail to eligible current or former tenants of buildings owned by Steve Croman who submitted claims to the Croman Tenant Restitution Fund.
The restitution fund is part of the settlement that arose out of an investigation and lawsuit filed by the AG against Croman for — among other things — harassment, coercion and fraud, to force rent-regulated tenants out of their apartments.
Here's more from the AG's press office:
The consent decree requires Croman to pay $8 million into a Tenant Restitution Fund – the largest-ever monetary settlement with an individual landlord. The $8 million will be divided equally among eligible claimants and distributed to tenants in installments over a 38 to 42-month period. This first round of restitution payments follows Croman’s initial $2 million payment to the fund.
To be eligible for restitution, tenants had to have lived in a rent-stabilized or rent-controlled apartment owned by Croman between July 1, 2011 and December 20, 2017, not including tenants who received a buyout of more than $20,000 (not including any amount that purported to cover rent or arrears).
Following last year’s historic consent decree, in August 2018, the claims administrator hired by the Attorney General mailed claim notices and application forms to current and former rent-stabilized and rent-controlled tenants in Croman’s buildings. Nearly 800 households filed applications for restitution funds. Eligible households will begin receiving checks for $2,425 each, as early as next week, in this first installment from the Croman Tenant Restitution Fund.
In addition to this $8 million Tenant Restitution Fund, the settlement required that a new, independent management company run Croman's residential properties for five years. In June, the AG's office selected Michael Besen’s New York City Management to oversee Croman's real-estate empire, which includes 47 buildings with 617 units in the East Village.
Croman was released from the Manhattan Correctional Facility on June 1 after serving eight months of a one-year jail sentence and paid a $5 million tax settlement following separate criminal charges brought by the AG's office for fraudulent refinancing of loans and tax fraud.

Paulaner’s Former Bowery Brewery Can be Yours for $50K per Month
The only brewery on the Bowery remains dry and desperate for investors. But only if you have deep pockets.
Over a year since its high-profile failure, the former Paulaner Brauhaus at 265 Bowery is again on the market. Requisite real estate listings want you to know that the German beer company dropped $2 million on building out the premises. The 4,500 square-foot brewery is now going for a whopping $50,400 per month in rent.
The placement of a German microbrewery in this spot – formerly the iconic Sammy’s Bowery Follies – seemed a hefty gamble upon announcement in 2012. It replaced Attias Oven Corp./Cannon Co. restaurant suppliers (building owners), which relocated to Brooklyn. From the get-go, many in the community questioned its financial viability. No more was that evident than four months into operations (circa April 2014) when the enormous establishment suddenly shuttered for unspecified “refurbishments.”
It hobbled on, but the initial closure was ultimately a bellwether for the future here…

Cardi B hands out free winter coats in New York City - CBS News
NEW YORK -- Hundreds of people lined up in New York City as rapper Cardi B handed out free winter coats. The Bronx-born rapper met with residents and fans on Thursday evening at the Marlboro Houses in Brooklyn during brisk fall weather.
The 26-year-old also was given balloons and a cake to celebrate her recent birthday. Cardi B said she cares a lot about kids and the community and feels it's important to set a good example.
"Sometimes people think that we just do the messed up things but we really… care for the kids and our community and everything," she said.
Cardi B, born Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, later got a gift of her own in the form of a symbolic key to the Marlboro Houses, CBS New York reported.
On Oct. 1, she got a summons in connection with a melee at a New York strip club. Her lawyer says the star didn't cause any harm.
About three weeks earlier, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj were involved in an altercation at a New York Fashion Week party.

After another seizure, Desi Galli returns to service tonight on Avenue B
Tumblr media
Several EVG readers were alarmed — once again here — yesterday to find a "seized" sticker from the State of New York on the front door at Desi Galli.
This happened in late February as well, though the quick-serve spot selling Indian street food was back open at 172 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street the following night.
In a quick email exchange, owner PriaVanda Chouhan said that she just got out of court, and the restaurant would be back open tonight. When asked if she has worked out a deal with the landlord so this won't happen again, she responded: "Yes — he finally lowered my rent!"
The sibling of the well-regarded Desi Galli on Lexington Avenue and East 27th Street opened here in April 2016.

Tuesday’s Headlines: Where’s Bill Edition
I got into the business when Ed Koch was still mayor. Then I covered little bits of the Dinkins, Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations. All of those guys, in their own way, hated the press. But at least they took questions from reporters every single day. So I’m just going on notice that the next time Mayor de Blasio decides to hold a press avail — which isn’t today, by the way — I’m coming with a full notepad and lots of memos I’ve been writing on cocktail napkins for at least a week. One of them says, “Dyckman.” One of them says, “Morris Park Avenue.” One of them says, “Queens Boulevard.” Another says, “Marty Golden.” And there’s another I can’t really read, but it may simply be a reminder not to forget my mother’s birthday.
Here’s the news:
I have to say I was a bit confused by the headline on NPR’s story about scooters, “As E-Scooters Roll Into American Cities, So Do Safety Concerns.” You guys do understand that car drivers killed more than 37,000 people last year, right? Kinda puts the “scooter threat” in perspective a bit, dontcha think?
The Bike Snob goes after the Spandex set in his latest column. (Outside)
MTA announces a “haunted subway” for Halloween. What could go wrong? (Gothamist, amNY)
OK, so maybe I was a bit harsh on Senator Chuck Schumer yesterday, calling him out for not doing enough to fight Donald Trump’s right-wing assault on the judiciary, so today I want to thank our senior senator for his work on getting us some more legroom on airplanes.
Mayor de Blasio confirms that he’s going with the “Promen-nada!” plan for the BQE repairs. (Brooklyn Paper)
Car2Go comes to Queens — and naturally residents are concerned about what they consider their parking spaces. (QNS)
Some great car mayhem shots from the great Paul Martinka. (Brooklyn Paper)
If you see lots of bus shelters blocked off this week, it’s because one fell apart in Staten Island and JCDecaux is doing the “abundance of caution” thing. (Patch, amNY, WSJ)
City DOT unveils a “left turn calming” program on Staten Island. Cue the locals who fail to react calmly to it (though Beep Jimmy Oddo likes it!). (Staten Island Advance)
Some Williamsburgers are calling for the reopening of the old Hope Street underpass under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, which was closed in the 1990s because it was gross and everyone hated it. (Bklyner)
And, finally, wait, what?! Um, we have to do better, New York. This is an embarrassment. (NY Times)

History makers give history lesson at Annual Men’s Day Celebration
By Jackie Hampton
The Honorable Carlton Reeves, U. S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi, called on The Honorable Fred Banks, former Supreme Court Justice, to introduce guest speaker Derrick Johnson, president & CEO of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People.
However, before Banks introduced Johnson, Reeves, gave the worshippers a history lesson about Banks and encouraged them to learn more about this man who has spent a great deal of his legal career dedicated to civil rights and justice. He talked about his 52 year career as a lawyer going back to when Banks was a law student passing the bar when there were those who did not have to take the bar and he spoke of him as a former Mississippi Supreme Court Justice trial judge and legislator.
Reeves referenced the 1969 case, Alexander v Holmes, in which the court ordered immediate desegregation of public schools in the American South. This case, in which Banks played a part in suing the state of Mississippi, took place 15 years after the US Supreme Court had ruled that all children should be able to go to school together. Reeves noted that as a young lawyer he learned so much from Banks while he was on the bench. He  said, “Read about Fred Banks Jr. and understand what has made this man great.”
When Banks, who is now senior partner at Phelps Dunbar Law Firm, approached the podium to introduce Johnson, he assured the listeners that the NAACP is in great hands with Johnson being at the helm. He said the Tougaloo undergraduate student makes great decisions and has demonstrated remarkable skills in collaborating with others. Banks said, “Derrick has a clear vision in which direction the organization should go.”
Johnson, in his message, recalled the role that  College Hill played in the Civil Rights Movement at a time when few churches got involved. He also said there is something special about Mississippi and College Hill. “While other churches were afraid of retaliation for getting involved in the movement, College Hill and its members were not afraid and kept their doors open when needed,” said Johnson.
He spoke about the character of it’s members and reminded church goers of the legacy of civil rights workers like the late Deacon Sam Bailey and Rev. R.L.T. Smith who was the grandfather of District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith.
Johnson challenged the members to get involved in government. He said we need prayer and we need workers because the progress that has been made in the past 50 years is being rolled back. He said we need to elect officials that know how to govern and how to read bills, such as Senator Hillman Frazier, who was in the audience
Johnson spoke of this country being on the edge of the cliff where racial hate is increasing but that College Hill can be a beacon of light while sitting in the center of Mississippi. Johnson received numerous amens and applause throughout his message.
Pastor Michael T. Williams thanked Johnson and all participatants who worked hard to make the Men’s Day service a success.
He also congratulated Rev. Calvin Peoples who was recognized as Man of the Year of College Hill. Peoples, who has been a right hand to the pastor in the pulpit, during weekly Bible study, prayer service and other events at the church, was chosen by the membership of College Hill to be Man of the Year.
Peoples is admired and loved by the members of College Hill as expressed by Deacon Gregory Anderson who gave a tribute on his behalf. Peoples’ son, Tim, also gave a tribute but it was his wife, Sandra Peoples, who introduced her husband of 26 years as Man of the Year. Also in attendance was his daughter Denise and employees of Nissan where he has been employed for 15 years.
A special presentation was given to Peoples by Leon Williams, president of the Laymen’s Ministry.
Bernard Bridges, co-chair of the Men’s Day Committee, gave a presentation to the speaker Derrick Johnson.
Douglas Sanders, co-chair, gave the acknowledgements as many members beamed in pride because this was the first time College Hill members had seen him in a suit.
Members and visitors both stated Men’s Day, held on Father’s Day, was a great success.

ROOSEVELT STREET, Seaport
While wandering around in the Seaport area under the spaghetti cluster of elevated roads that connect the Brooklyn Bridge to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, I spotted this unusual road emanating from South Street north of Dover. Following it west, it connects with Robert F. Wagner Senior Place, the road that runs along the south end of the Al Smith Houses, built in the 1940s.
A sign that something may be cooking as to an old street remnant is this very old, rusted octagonal light pole with a curved mast with a brace. These go back to the early 1950s–after that, the Department of Traffic (now Transportation) switched over to single masts with no braces (except on wide streets, where double masts were used).
Maps of this area made before the 1940s show a plethora of old streets that were subsequently wiped off the map when buildings like Police Plaza, the Al Smith Houses, and Bergtraum High School were built between the 1940s and 1970s. Roosevelt Street was one of these. It goes back to the late 18th or early 19th Centuries and has nothing to do with Teddy or FDR; the Roosevelts were a prominent NYC family from the late colonial era and owned property in lower Manhattan, and a street was laid out in those early days and named for the family.
The street we see here may be a remnant of Roosevelt Street, though it meets South Street directly beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. If you look closely at the map, the Bridge passes over South Street a bit south of Roosevelt Street. So, I can’t be sure. It does have the nifty rusting old streetlamp, though.

Worshipers celebrate Christmas at New York City churches amid heightened security - WABC-TV
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) --
The NYPD is stepping up patrols outside churches and around New York City Tuesday to everyone safe this Christmas.
Worshipers are being met with tight security for at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Officials say there are no credible threats, but they are beefing up security out of an abundance of caution.
Christmas Mass is a holiday tradition for many families, and most have grown accustomed to the sight of heavily-armed officers.
Hundreds packed into St. Patrick's to celebrate Midnight Mass, led by Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
Crowds stood in long security lines waiting to get inside, but the NYPD insists the goal is to keep the holiday about the holiday and that they treat all denominations equally.
Counter-terrorism officers and those with the Strategic Response Group will be stationed at house of worship all across the city.
"Every year, no matter what the denomination, we cover," NYPD Chief of Department Terrence Monahan said. "Christmas is a very big Christian holiday, obviously. Big Masses, Midnight Masses all over the city. Just like we do on Passover, we cover the synagogues, we cover the Catholic churches during this, and we cover everything wherever there's a large gathering of people."

America’s first World War I memorial sits in Battery Park, giving New Yorkers the time of day
Manhattan’s shoreline was for much of its history crowded with piers of various lengths and structural integrities.
The western side of the island had the largest, most elaborate piers to serve enormous steamships and shipping vessels, large sheds that could accommodate thousands of people and tons of freight.
Pier A, originally built for use by the docks department, is the last surviving example of this grand tradition and is a striking one.  It was built between 1884 and 1886 with the Statue of Liberty in mind; not only are there clear views of Lady Liberty from here, but its tower roof is painted green to emulate her oxidized body.
Below: The pier in 1903, before the clock was installed on the tower.
New York Landmark Conservancy
However it’s the bling on top—an elegant 1919 clock—that’s the most eye-catching. It was installed as a World War I memorial on January 25, 1919, the first such commemoration here or anywhere in the United States.
New York Herald
From the New York Times: “Rear Admiral Josiah S. McKean, Chief of the Bureau of Operations of the Untied States Navy, will at noon today present to the city the ships clock donated by Daniel G. Reid. The clock has been installed in the tower at the river end of Pier 1, North River.”
Who was this generous donor? Reid was known as the ‘Tinplate King’, a metal mogul who eventually owned every tinplate manufacturer in the country — these are the days before anti-trust — before being absorbed by J.P. Morgan as part of U.S. Steel. He eventually became that company’s director.
Courtesy Reid Health
Reid was a Fifth Avenue millionaire and lived in a lavish home off Central Park in 1919. (He lived there with his wife but filed for divorce just a few months after the clock was unveiled.) Today Reid’s carriage house on East 70th Street is a notable piece of Upper East Side architecture.
Below: The pier in 1936
Berenice Abbott/Library of Congress
According the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Reid’s gift was made to the city as a “memorial to those of our soldiers and sailors who have died in order that freedom might live.” One couple detail about the unveiling — According to the Eagle, “music was furnished by the band of the Street Cleaning Department.”
The organizers were aware then that this memorial was the first in the nation. It was installed over two and a half months after Armistice Day but several months before the Treaty of Versailles.
Below: The pier and clock tower in 1954
New York Landmarks Conservancy
“This clock and bell will say ‘Bon voyage’ to all of us when we leave and ‘Welcome’ on our return,” Admiral McKean said, as reported in the New York Herald. “It will through its ship’s bell remind all hearers that while the great railroads bring thousands of visitors and thousands of tons of freight to the city the great ships are equally important to the commercial success of New York, which means the commercial success of our whole country.”
After serving as a fireboat station for many decades, Pier A famously fell into disrepair, a hopeless ruin in Battery Park, its clock hands frozen in time. Today the pier — a New York City landmark since 1975 — has been marvelously restored, and the restaurant Pier A Harbor House calls it home.
Believe it or not, this picture was taken in 2008. Today Pier A has been marvelously refurbished.

BREAKING: Citi Bike To Triple Fleet Size And Double Zone as Lyft Coughs Up $100M
Citi Bike will triple its current fleet of 12,000 bikes — and double the system’s coverage area — as part of a five-year, $100-million investment from the company’s new owner, Lyft, to grow the largest bike share system in North America.
In a statement, Citi Bike said Lyft’s money would:
Raise the Citi Bike fleet size to nearly 40,000 bicycles and more than double the size of the current service area, which is limited to most of Manhattan and tiny slivers of Queens and Brooklyn. Citi Bike’s exclusive operating zone currently covers 30 square miles of New York. That would raise to 65 square miles — a zone that would include significant swaths of the boroughs.
Expand the deployment of pedal-assist e-bikes — though the company would not release a projected number.
Immediately” restore the existing system to its required fleet level of 12,000 bikes. The company went through a repair crisis this fall, which, at times, idled almost half its fleet within. The company said the fleet would be restored to full strength by “the end of February.”
Expand the existing “Reduced Fare Bike Share program,” which gives NYCHA residents and SNAP recipients memberships for $5 a month.
Continue to fund associated operating expenses “to improve and expand the system.”
“This is a commitment to equity and delivering on our promise of ‘Citi Bike for all,'” said Caroline Samponaro, head of Bike, Scooter & Pedestrian Policy for Lyft, which owns Citi Bike’s parent company, Motivate. “We have heard countless neighborhoods asking for Citi Bike. So this is about getting something that works into neighborhoods that have been left out. And that will mean more riders and more daily trips.”
Citi Bike currently has more than 147,000 annual members. That number would be expected to grow dramatically if Citi Bike expands into commuting-distance neighborhoods such as Sunnyside, Jackson Heights, Washington Heights, Hunts Point, Mott Haven Sunset Park, Crown Heights and elsewhere.
The expansion would be almost entirely docked. Citi Bike has experimented with dockless bikes with a pilot effort in The Bronx, but it has not enjoyed nearly the same level of ridership as the existing docked system.
“Citi Bike has been successful as a dock-based system and we want to build on that success,” spokeswoman Julie Wood told Streetsblog. “There may be some refinements as new technology becomes available, but we believe the docked model has proven very successful.”
Mayor de Blasio hailed the announcement in a statement Thursday, but it is unclear what, if anything, the city has done to precipitate Lyft’s huge expansion. Unlike other forms of mass transit, Citi Bike is not subsidized by the city.
“New York City is one of the world’s great biking cities – and it’s about to get even better,” Hizzoner said in a statement. “This expansion means tens of thousands more New Yorkers are going to have a fast and inexpensive way to get around their city. It also means much more reliable service for all the riders who already use Citi Bike. We welcome Lyft’s investment to make Citi Bike bigger and better. We are ready get to work with communities across the city to make this expansion a success.”

Samponaro said the city’s commitment would come in the form of “community outreach” to ensure that Citi Bike docks get properly cited in various neighborhoods. She praised the city as a “partner” in Lyft’s effort.
“The city should get tremendous credit,” she said. “They are doubling down on their commitment to create a more equitable system by expanding it into more neighborhoods.”
For all the good news for Citi Bike fans, there is some bad news for the company’s would-be competitors: Citi Bike will retain the exclusive right to operate bike share within its growing service area. The city will retain the right to undertake pilot bike share programs outside of the expanded zone — as it has done in Staten Island, the Rockaways and The Bronx — but the deal makes it clear that Citi Bike is de facto New York’s bike share company.
Naturally, Citi Bike competitors were annoyed.
“After 5 years of operating in wealthier NYC communities, Citi Bike is now asking for another five years to expand and is still not committing to serve all New Yorkers,” said Josh Gold, Senior Policy and Communications Manager at Uber, which owns JUMP, a pedal-assist company that is currently operating in a small pilot area in Staten Island. “The city should work with all parties to ensure access to everyone who wants to ride a bike to get around their communities — not one company which has long left outer-borough New Yorkers stranded.”
A spokesman for Lime — which also operates a pilot program — echoed that sentiment.
“New York’s transportation equity problem requires an immediate solution — and the best solution for New Yorkers is for multiple companies to compete, delivering the most options to every community,” said Lime spokesman Evan Thies. “Lime stands ready to deliver for New Yorkers right now.”

Get Ready For The Grand Central Holiday Fair 2018 Casting Call
Grand Central Holiday Fair Casting Call 2018
I feel like I’m just waking up from my post-holiday market hibernation! I’m sure our amazing market vendors are only just now thawing out themselves!
And now the Grand Central Holiday Fair is having its annual Casting Call on Monday, April 9th at 10AM in Vanderbilt Hall, where the holiday market actually takes place.
This year, the market is looking for vendors selling handmade products in these categories: men’s accessories, tabletop and home décor, children’s products, pottery, glassware, art, photography, and jewelry. Food products will not be evaluated at this time.
Get there early, as it’s a first-come-first-seen scenario, with no guarantee that the committee will be able to see everyone. Practice your pitch and go get ‘em!
