Ibrahim Sultan wins UAE men’s chess championship
Wafia Darwish Al Maamari rules women’s division; Dubai tops gold haul in UAE National Championships with four titles
International Master (IM) Ibrahim Sultan receives the champion’s cup after ruling this year’s UAE Men’s Chess Championship to capture his first major national men’s title.
International Master (IM) Ibrahim Sultan ruled this year’s UAE Men’s Chess Championship to capture his first major national men’s title.
A former junior standout from Dubai who reigned as the UAE’s under-20 champion last year, Sultan announced his entry into the big league as he finished ahead of veteran campaigners IM Omar Noaman and Fide Master (FM) Jasem Alhuwar, who both represented Sharjah and settled for the runner-up spots.
Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Wafia Darwish Al Maamari of Al Ain was crowned this year’s UAE women’s champion, finishing ahead of WCM Abeer Ali of Sharjah and Woman International Master (WIM) Amna Nouman of Dubai.
Players from Dubai walked away with the most titles at this year’s national championships, claiming four first-place finishes.
Apart from Sultan, other Dubai champions were Ali Abdulaziz, who succeeded Sultan as the UAE’s new under-20 champion, Mariam Essa in the girls’ under-18 and Hala Gamal Amin in the girls’ under-10.
Ibrahim Al Bannai, president of the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, said the solid performance of the Dubai players this year is a result of rigid training organised by the club throughout the year.
“However, our ambition is much greater, especially among the youth,” said Al Bannai, adding that the club aims to develop new talents who will represent the country in international competitions.
Abu Dhabi and Sharjah each won three titles during the competition. WCM Rouda Essa Alserkal ruled the girls’ under-20 to lead Abu Dhabi’s campaign, with FM Omran Al Hosani and Latifah Darmaki delivering the other gold medals in the under-16 open division and the girls’ under-12 respectively.
The winners from Sharjah were Hamad Essam (open under-14), Soud Jaber (open under-10) and Aisha Saif Al Ali (girls’ under-14).
Representatives from Al Ain picked up two tites courtesy of Al Maamari and Amal Fadel Alshamsi in the girls’ under-16.
Fujairah also won two titles with Candidate Master (CM) Khalifah Khaled topping the open under-12 and Salim Jasim Alblooshi ruling the open under-8. Hour Naser Al Nuaimi delivered Ras Al Khaimah’s only gold medal by winning the girls’ under-8 category.
Meanwhile, as competition in the UAE’s age-group categories heat up, Al Bannai also announced that Dubai is recruiting two new coaches to train up-and-coming Emirati youth players.
The new coaches will work under the supervision of Najeeb Saleh, the club’s technical director who oversees Dubai’s youth chess training programme, and will join other coaches at the Dubai Chess Academy.

Aretha Franklin Didn't Have A Will
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/aretha-franklin-didnt-have-a-will/
Aretha Franklin Didn't Have A Will
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aretha Franklin was so hard-nosed in her business dealings that she demanded to be paid in cash before performing. Her heirs won’t have it so simple.
Though she lived to 76 and was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer, the Queen of Soul died without a will.
As her four sons and other family members move on from Friday’s funeral in Detroit, they’re left with the potentially tall task of finding out how many millions she was worth, and divvying it up, a process that could take years and is likely to play out in public.

A woman holds a program from Aretha Franklin’s funeral at the Greater Grace Temple on Friday in Detroit, Michigan.
Estate law experts expressed surprise but not shock that a wealthy person like Franklin would put off making a will until it was too late. At least one of the singer’s attorneys says he urged her repeatedly over the years to draft one.
“I tried to convince her that she should do not just a will but a trust while she was still alive,” says Don Wilson, a Los Angeles lawyer who worked on entertainment matters for Franklin for nearly 30 years. “She never told me, ‘No, I don’t want to do one.’ She understood the need. It just didn’t seem to be something she got around to.”
Laura Zwicker, an attorney who specializes in estate planning but is not affiliated with the Franklin estate, says she sees it happen all too often in her work.
“People don’t like to face their own mortality,” Zwicker says. “I had a client who had a $70 million real estate portfolio who had had end-stage diabetes. He had plenty of conversations with me about estate planning but would not sign the documents.”

Edward Franklin, one of Franklin’s four sons, sings at her funeral service on Friday in Detroit.
Papers filed in Michigan’s Oakland County court last week by David J. Bennett, the lawyer who worked most closely with Franklin, lay out the few known basics:
She was not married and left four sons, ages 48 to 63: Clarence Franklin, Edward Franklin, Kecalf Franklin and Ted White Jr. Clarence, Aretha’s eldest, is incapacitated and is represented by a guardian. And a niece of hers has accepted the role of executor.
Under Michigan law, as in most states, the sons will equally divide their mother’s assets in the absence of a will, and so far no signs of conflict have emerged among family members. Bennett did not respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.
Aretha Franklin’s friend Ron Moten, a Michigan businessman, gave the four sons some guidance in his speech at Friday’s funeral.
“Remember your family, and friends that have been with you for years,” Moten told the men. “Because you are about to meet a lot of people who will now want to be your new best friend. You will also meet some people that will have the best investments in the world for you. My advice? Go slow, be careful and be smart.”
The documents make no mention of the value of Franklin’s estate. The figure almost certainly runs into the tens of millions, but there will probably be widely varying estimates as her attorneys seek to downplay her wealth for tax purposes and the IRS tries to maximize the amount for its own reasons.
Franklin maintained ownership of the songs she wrote and did well by them, Wilson says, though of her major hits, “Think” is the only one that’s her own composition. She also wrote some lesser hits, such as “Rock Steady.”
Though her records were played millions of times, she earned little in radio royalties from smashes like 1967′s “Respect” because such payments go overwhelmingly to the song’s author, not the performer. In the case of “Respect,” the royalties go to the estate of Otis Redding, even though the song owes nearly all its popularity to Franklin.
“I would imagine she probably felt she was entitled to more, but probably received more than a lot of artists from the time, especially African-American artists,” Wilson says.

Franklin performs at Radio City Music Hall in April 2017.
Among Franklin’s more tangible assets are several pieces of property in the Detroit area that according to tax assessors’ estimates are worth at least $2 million, with a market value that could easily be twice that.
Once the value is established — a process that could take years — the IRS will take any back taxes Franklin owed, then will tax her estate at 40 percent for any assets beyond $11.2 million.
Kenneth Abdo, an attorney who specializes in probate law and has worked on the estate of Prince, who also died without a will, says the IRS will conduct an audit of her holdings.
Wilson, her entertainment attorney, says she would not have wanted to see her finances publicly aired: “She was a private person.”
As for why some clients don’t make out a will, Zwicker said some heirs, like Franklin’s son Clarence, may need more than others, and that can be a difficult and touchy decision for a parent.
“One arrangement may be fitting for one child, where other people need more help,” Zwicker said. “To accept that and put it on paper can be hard for a parent.”

Firefox will soon start blocking trackers by default
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/firefox-will-soon-start-blocking-trackers-by-default/
Firefox will soon start blocking trackers by default
Mozilla today announced that its Firefox browser will soon by default automatically block all attempts at cross-site tracking.
There are three parts to this strategy. Starting with version 63, which is currently in testing in the browser’s nightly release channel, Firefox will block all slow-loading trackers (with ads being the biggest offender here). Those are trackers that take more than five seconds to load. Starting with Firefox 65, the browser will also strip all cookies and block all storage access from third-party trackers. In addition, Mozilla is also working on blocking cryptomining scripts and trackers that fingerprint users. As usual, the timeline could still change, depending on how these first tests work out.
“In the physical world, users wouldn’t expect hundreds of vendors to follow them from store to store, spying on the products they look at or purchase,” Mozilla’s Nick Nguyen writes today. “Users have the same expectations of privacy on the web, and yet in reality, they are tracked wherever they go. Most web browsers fail to help users get the level of privacy they expect and deserve.”
If you want to give these new features a try today, all you have to do is install the unstable Firefox Nightly release. There, in the privacy settings, you’ll find the new tracker blocking features under the “Content Blocking” header. Once you’ve turned that on, the browser will also walk you through how all of this works and highlight that some of the more aggressive settings may break a few sites.
In addition, Firefox’s private mode uses the same kind of tracking protection already, as does Firefox for iOS.
Safari users, too, will have likely yawned while reading this. Apple, after all, already announced similar privacy features for its browser last year. The approach here is different, with Apple betting on machine learning and Firefox using more traditional block lists, but the intent is the same.
As Mozilla notes, the idea here is to give users choice. Sites can still ask for a user’s data but they’ll have to ask for consent before they get it. “Blocking pop-up ads in the original Firefox release was the right move in 2004, because it didn’t just make Firefox users happier, it gave the advertising platforms of the time a reason to care about their users’ experience. In 2018, we hope that our efforts to empower our users will have the same effect,” writes Nguyen.

Venice Film Festival: Orson Welles’ last film makes it to the screen
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/venice-film-festival-orson-welles-last-film-makes-it-to-the-screen/
Venice Film Festival: Orson Welles’ last film makes it to the screen
Film editor Bob Murawski and producer Filip Jan Rymsza attend a photocall for ‘The Other Side of The Wind’.
It is the stuff of movie industry legend: the director of the best film ever made leaves behind an unfinished movie destined never to be seen — until now.
Orson Welles shot The Other Side of the Wind in the early 1970s but gave up on it, leaving behind 100 hours of footage when he died in 1985.
Five decades on from its conception, after years of financial and legal wrangling, the film has been completed, a gift to movie buffs who will probably spend the next 50 years decoding it.
The Other Side of the Wind, which The Hollywood Reporter called “the Holy Grail for zealous film buffs, the long-awaited bookend for Citizen Kane,” is art imitating life imitating art: itself the story of an unfinished film left behind by a great director and reconstructed after his death.
John Huston — a famous director in real life — plays Jake Hannaford who, hours before his death in a car crash, shows his unfinished movie to guests at his 70th birthday party.
That film-within-a-film is self-consciously arty, with plenty of female nudity, reminiscent of late 1960s movies such as Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow Up or some of Jean-Luc Godard’s films of the time.
“The old guy’s trying to get ‘with it’,” says one viewer.
“Is that what this movie is about?” The party is populated by a host of filmmakers, journalists and hangers-on, all commenting on the art of movie-making and many shooting their own footage as the story unfolds — film clips that make up much of the movie we are watching, in a pioneering version of the “found footage” technique often used in modern horror films.
“People talk about these reality shows and found footage movies but I think it’s very interesting that Orson Welles was there first,” Bob Murawski, the film editor who had the task of reconstructing The Other Side of the Wind, told reporters.
“The conceit of the movie is that it’s shot by many documentary filmmakers, camera people, all shooting with different film stock and cameras. I think it’s why it seems so contemporary because years later people picked up on that technique and that’s the style that Orson invented in the 70s.” The Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw called The Other Side of the Wind a “hurricane of anger and wit”.
“Perhaps leaving it unfinished was Welles’s ultimate, secret tribute to the central truth of The Other Side of the Wind: how the agony and the ecstasy of creative art lies in the process not the product, and how the finished work will never measure up to the ideal version in your head.”
The Other Side of the Wind had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which runs until September 8.

Kevin Owens Reveals Who He Would Like to Face at WrestleMania 35

Kevin Owens Reveals Who He Would Like to Face at WrestleMania 35
Posted By: Caylon Knox on Sep 01, 2018
WWE Superstar Kevin Owens recently spoke to CBS Los Angeles. When discussing who he would like to face at next year’s WrestleMania, Owens revealed that he would like to have a match against former Universal Champion Finn Bálor:
“There’s so many guys I wish I could wrestle, but if it was up to me, whatever I would do would lead to me and Finn Bálor at WrestleMania next year, because he and I came to WWE the exact same time. We didn’t know each other before we got there. We became pretty close pretty quickly when we did get to the NXT Performance Center. He’s been my best friend ever since, so I’d love to share the ring with him on that stage in WrestleMania.
“I love wrestling him and as far as I know he feels the same way. I think we put on really entertaining matches that are very good. We had a match in Japan a few years ago that I still think was one of my best ones in WWE. So, I think we mesh pretty well.”

Lacazette lifts Emery as Arsenal survive Cardiff
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/lacazette-lifts-emery-as-arsenal-survive-cardiff/
Lacazette lifts Emery as Arsenal survive Cardiff
Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette scores his side’s third goal of the game during the Premier League match at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Cardiff: Unai Emery collected his second victory as Arsenal, manager thanks to a fine strike from Alexandre Lacazette in a 3-2 success at Cardiff on Sunday.
Emery’s men had threatened to surrender two more Premier League points as they twice squandered the lead, with Neil Warnock’s Cardiff exploiting old failings for the Gunners.
But, despite making hard work of seeing off the promoted Welsh side, Arsenal sealed maximum points with Lacazette’s late strike to record only their second away Premier League win since December.
Shkodran Mustafi headed Arsenal ahead before Victor Camarasa equalised in first-half stoppage-time as Emery received another intensive lesson in the strengths and weaknesses in his squad.
There was more of the same in the second half as brilliance from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang restored the lead before another defensive aberration allowed Cardiff to draw level for a second time through Danny Ward.
At times, it appeared the new Arsenal manager would witness old issues undermine his side as they were pegged back, leaving Emery in no doubt about the strengths and weaknesses in his squad.
If Gunners fans hoped the end of Arsenal Wenger’s reign would cure the brittleness of their team, they received a clear reminder in the Welsh capital that Emery has much work to do to add the requisite resilience to his side.
Twice his men went ahead against the Premier League new-boys and twice familiar defensive failings allowed Warnock’s men back into the contest.
Yet it was ultimately an afternoon of success for Emery, who saw the Gunners’ persistence rewarded with Lacazette’s emphatic strike nine minutes from full-time.
There were other encouraging signs, too, not least the set-piece threat that brought the opening goal and might have led to another.
With just 12 minutes on the clock, Mustafi out-jumped everyone to power home a header from Granit Xhaka’s cross and, in the second half, only a save from the Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge prevented a carbon copy goal.
Chief among the Emery’s concerns was the continued struggles of goalkeeper Petr Cech to deal with the Spanish manager’s commitment to build from the back.
Twice in the opening eight minutes, Cech made a mess of dealing with backpasses and, on the second occasion, Harry Arter fired over when he should have opened the scoring.
There were defensive headaches too, which came to the fore in first half stoppage-time when Xhaka’s poor pass was intercepted, Nacho Monreal failed to execute a simple interception from Joe Bennett’s cross and Camarasa spun to find the roof of the Arsenal net.
More defensive weakness on 70 minutes allowed Ward to head home unmarked off the base of the woodwork after Aubameyang had restored Arsenal’s lead six minutes earlier, bending a superb shot past Etheridge after being teed up well by Lacazette and Mesut Ozil.
But Arsenal’s superior individual ability finally won the day when substitute Lucas Torreira fed Lacazette, whose turn of pace allowed him to rifle a winner inside the near post past Etheridge.
Still there was time for Sean Morrison to head a superb chance just over for Cardiff as Arsenal did their best to give away the lead for a third time, leaving their manager with much to reflect on during the international break.

Big Cass Comments On His Recent WWE Release

Big Cass Comments On His Recent WWE Release
During a recent interview on Booker T’s podcast, Big Cass spoke out regarding his WWE release.
“I’m doing good, just living my life right now,” Cass said. “Hitting the gym, waiting for my 90-day [no compete clause] to end. Anticipating what’s next on my schedule, trying to get myself in the best shape possible. Just living life, I don’t know how else to say it.”
“If I’m going to be honest with you, I made a lot of mistakes. I made a lot of mistakes in a very short period of time,” Cass admitted. “I did some things that I shouldn’t have done. I guess the company couldn’t rely on me and couldn’t trust me. Look, I’ll just be honest with you, in my opinion, they made the right decision for them.”
“It was the right decision to get rid of me at that point in time – not to say I won’t be back – but at that point in time they definitely made the right decision for them. To be honest with you, looking at it they made the right decision for me. Everyone makes mistakes, but when you make that many mistakes in that short of a period of time then you lose people’s trust and you’re not reliable anymore.”
“Yeah, I would have, [fired myself]. I definitely would have fired myself. If I was in Vince McMahon’s position, I would have fired myself for sure, one-hundred percent.”

Ariana Grande Belts Out Aretha Franklin Anthem At Queen Of Soul's Funeral

Ariana Grande Belts Out Aretha Franklin Anthem At Queen Of Soul's Funeral
If Ariana Grande performing “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” earlier this month after Aretha Franklin’s death made you feel anything, then be forewarned she’s done it again.
The “Sweetener” singer was brought on last minute to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul during her funeral at Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple on Friday. She arrived in a black mini-dress with beau Pete Davidson, whose presence raised some eyebrows on social media.
On stage, Grande once again delighted her audience ― this time including ex-boyfriend Big Sean ― with a full-throated rendition of the Carole King-penned number.
Franklin was “fond” of Grande, the late soul singer’s family said in a statement earlier this week, and was apparently moved by the 25-year-old’s performance of Franklin’s classic ballad on “The Tonight Show” following her death.
After Grande finished the song at the funeral, Bishop Charles Ellis kept her on stage for a few moments longer, joking that he’d thought she was a Taco Bell menu item when he first saw the program.

Former President Bill Clinton takes a picture with Grande and her fiancée, Pete Davidson, before Franklin’s funeral.
Grande didn’t seem too fazed by that comment, laughing it off and proclaiming “We love you, Aretha” one more time before exiting the stage.
Besides Grande, the long list of artists performing at the service included Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Faith Hill, Shirley Caesar, Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adams, Marvin Sapp and Vanessa Bell Armstrong.

Watford down Spurs to maintain winning record
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/watford-down-spurs-to-maintain-winning-record/
Watford down Spurs to maintain winning record
London: Watford rallied from behind with two set-piece goals to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Vicarage Road on Sunday, ending the visitors’ 100 per cent record and maintaining their own perfect start to the Premier League season.
After a tepid first half, Tottenham were gifted the lead when Abdoulaye Doucoure scored an own goal in the 53rd minute, deflecting the ball in with his chest.
Watford responded well and were level in the 69th minute after Troy Deeney headed home Jose Holebas’s free kick. Craig Cathcart completed the turnaround, heading home from another Holebas set piece 14 minutes from time.
Harry Kane wasted a good headed chance from Kieran Trippier’s cross as Tottenham tried to salvage something but Watford claimed their first league win over Spurs since 1987.
It is only the second time in Watford’s history that they have won their first four matches of a league campaign — the previous time in 1988 in the second tier.
“I think we have played better in other games but against Tottenham you have do things differently,” Watford manager Javi Gracia said.
“You have to be very demanding. We have been confident until the end and with the support of our fans we got it.”
For Tottenham it was a rapid fall from grace after their 3-0 win at Manchester United on Monday and the defeat left them in fifth place with nine points.
“We were so relaxed in the first half and we made a lot of mistakes. I’m disappointed because we need to do more and play much, much better,” manager Mauricio Pochettino said.
“If you want to be a contender you cannot concede the type of goals we conceded. The reality is so clear. When you lose you must learn and improve.”
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho dedicated Manchester United’s 2-0 victory at Burnley to beleaguered executive Ed Woodward as his club returned to winning ways in an incident-packed clash at Turf Moor.
United manager Mourinho, whose name was chanted throughout the afternoon by the 2,400 travelling supporters, also claimed Marcus Rashford had been naive in being shown a straight red card, just 10 minutes after appearing as a 60th minute substitute, following an altercation with Phil Bardsley.
By that stage, United were comfortably in front thanks to two goals from Romelu Lukaku and could even afford the luxury of a missed Paul Pogba penalty, won by Rashford following a foul by Ben Mee, and saved well by Joe Hart.
But, given the delicate political situation at Old Trafford currently, the afternoon was as notable for events off the field as on them.
Before kick-off, supporters had paid for a small plane to fly over the ground, towing a banner that read: “Ed Woodward, a specialist in failure”.
The accusation — one which Mourinho famously directed at former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger when he himself was in charge of Chelsea — referenced the executive vice-chairman’s supposed inability to deliver the United manager his desired transfer targets this summer.
But while Mourinho praised the United fans, who supported their players after the shock 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Monday, he also offered a hint of support for Woodward.
“In the match I’m not looking at the sky, unless I’m asking for the guy to give me help!” joked Mourinho.
“I didn’t see the plane but Ed Woodward won this afternoon, 2-0.
“But I think we started winning this match because of Old Trafford, after Spurs. We lost at home, if the fans had reacted bad the team loses confidence, the week is not a good week, the team feels pressure.
“But we lost at home and the fans were amazing to the team. The team understood the direction was good and it was not a sad week, it was a very good week at work and we started the way you saw.”
Dispute
Despite the prematch protest, and supporters clearly siding with their manager in any dispute between him and Woodward, the afternoon should have been a routine one after Lukaku scored twice in the first half.
After 26 minutes he rose powerfully between two defenders to head in an Alexis Sanchez cross before he reacted sharply following a deflected Jesse Lingard shot and swept the ball in from six yards.
Mourinho claimed that Pogba will remain United’s penalty taker, despite his miss, should he wish to remain on duty.
But what had been an unqualified United success at Turf Moor to that point suffered slightly when Rashford, who had been cynically fouled by Bardsley, headbutted his assailant.
“I didn’t see it, the only thing I can say is that is probably the experience of Bardsley, 20 years in football, against the impulse and naivety of a guy who has been in top football for three years but is still a young head,” said Mourinho.
“Harsh? I don’t know. You could give yellows for both and keep going, maybe.”
The closing stages should have seen Lukaku claim a hat-trick, as he twice missed one-on-ones when clean through on Hart, but not even those errors could reduce Mourinho’s appreciation for his efforts.
“He played very well for us, scored two important goals,” said Mourinho.
“He could have scored more but maybe he was a bit tired, playing with 10 men.
“He should be leaving here with a hat-trick, easily. But the important thing is he is back to goals and we’re back to victories.”

Jim Cornette Blasts Joey Ryan's All In Entrance
Posted By: Ben Jordan Kerin on Sep 02, 2018
Jim Cornette was maybe not surprisingly critical Joey Ryan being accompanied to the ring by men dressed as penises at Saturday’s All In Event.
Below is what Cornette had to say on the entrance.
I appreciate everyone checking to see if I had a stroke during #AllIn , thankfully no as I was watching @Svengoolie on @MeTV . That said, sad to hear the guys had that great platform & big crowd & chose to yuk it up with the Dick guy & other horseshit. Why I had no interest.
— Jim Cornette (@TheJimCornette) 2 September 2018
To anyone wondering why I have loved wrestling for 40 years and now don’t watch it even if I’m paid to do so: “The dicks made sense for Joey’s character”. I couldn’t have possibly written a better reason not to participate in this horseshit ever again. https://t.co/ipBkE3HIvG

Amazon is quietly doubling down on cryptographic security
New Post has been published on https://latestnews2018.com/amazon-is-quietly-doubling-down-on-cryptographic-security/
Amazon is quietly doubling down on cryptographic security
The growth of cloud services — with on-demand access to IT services over the Internet — has become one of the biggest evolutions in enterprise technology, but with it, so has the threat of security breaches and other cybercriminal activity. Now it appears that one of the leading companies in cloud services is looking for more ways to double down and fight the latter. Amazon’s AWS has been working on a range of new cryptographic and AI-based tools to help manage the security around cloud-based enterprise services, and it currently has over 130 vacancies for engineers with cryptography skills to help build and run it all.
One significant part of the work has been within a division of AWS called the Automated Reasoning Group, which focuses on identifying security issues and developing new tools to fix them for AWS and its customers based on automated reasoning, a branch of artificial intelligence that covers both computer science and mathematical logic and is aimed at helping computers automatically reason completely or nearly completely.
In recent times, Amazon has registered two new trademarks, Quivela and SideTrail, both of which have connections to ARG.
Classified in its patent application as “computer software for cryptographic protocol specification and verification,” Quivela also has a Github repository within AWS Labs’ profile that describes it as a “prototype tool for proving the security of cryptographic protocols,” developed by the AWS Automated Reasoning Group. (The ARG also has as part of its mission to share code and ideas with the community.)
SideTrail is not on Github, but Byron Cook, an academic who is the founder and director of the AWS Automated Reasoning Group, has co-authored a research paper called “SideTrail: Verifying the Time Balancing of Cryptosystems.” However, the link to the paper, describing what this is about, is no longer working.
The trademark application for SideTrail includes a long list of potential applications (as trademark applications often do). The general idea is cryptography-based security services. Among them: “Computer software, namely, software for monitoring, identifying, tracking, logging, analyzing, verifying, and profiling the health and security of cryptosystems; network encryption software; computer network security software,” “Providing access to hosted operating systems and computer applications through the Internet,” and a smattering of consulting potential: “Consultation in the field of cloud computing; research and development in the field of security and encryption for cryptosystems; research and development in the field of software; research and development in the field of information technology; computer systems analysis.”
Added to this, in July, a customer of AWS started testing out two other new cryptographic tools developed by the ARG also for improving an organization’s cybersecurity — with the tools originally released the previous August (2017). Tiros and Zelkova, as the two tools are called, are math-based techniques that variously evaluate access control schemes, security configurations and feedback based on different setups to help troubleshoot and prove the effectiveness of security systems across storage (S3) buckets.
Amazon has not trademarked Tiros and Zelkova. A Zelkova trademark, for financial services, appears to be registered as an LLC called “Zelkova Acquisition” in Las Vegas, while there is no active trademark listed for Tiros.
Amazon declined to respond to our questions about the trademarks. A selection of people we contacted associated with the projects did not respond to requests for comment.
More generally, cryptography is a central part of how IT services are secured: Amazon’s Automated Reasoning Group has been around since 2014 working in this area. But Amazon appears to be doing more now both to ramp up the tools it produces and consider how it can be applied across the wider business. A quick look on open vacancies at the company shows that there are currently 132 openings at Amazon for people with cryptography skills.
“Cloud is the new computer, the Earth is the motherboard and data centers are the cards,” Cook said in a lecture he delivered recently describing AWS and the work that the ARG is doing to help AWS grow. “The challenge is that as [AWS] scales it needs to be ever more secure… How does AWS continue to scale quickly and securely?
“AWS has made a big bet on our community,” he continued, as one answer to that question. That’s led to an expansion of the group’s activities in areas like formal verification and beyond, as a way of working with customers and encouraging them to move more data to the cloud.
Amazon is also making some key acquisitions also to build up its cloud security footprint, such as Sqrrl and Harvest.ai, two AI-based security startups whose founding teams both happen to have worked at the NSA.
Amazon’s AWS division pulled in over $6 billion in revenues last quarter with $1.6 billion in operating income, a healthy margin that underscores the shift that businesses and other organizations are making to cloud-based services.
Security is an essential component of how that business will continue to grow for Amazon and the wider industry: more trust in the infrastructure, and more proofs that cloud architectures can work better than using and scaling the legacy systems that businesses use today, will bolster the business. And it’s also essential, given the rise of breaches and ever more sophisticated cyber crimes. Gartner estimates that cloud-based security services will be a $6.9 billion market this year, rising to nearly $9 billion by 2020.
Automated tools that help human security specialists do their jobs better is an area that others like Microsoft are also eyeing up. Last year, it acquired Israeli security firm Hexadite, which offers remediation services to complement and bolster the work done by enterprise security specialists.

Victoria Beckham tells kids: ‘Dad's not a cheat'

Victoria Beckham tells kids: ‘Dad's not a cheat'
Allegations about the state of their marriage and ridiculous claims about David are extremely hurtful, says Victoria
Paris: Fashion designer Victoria Beckham told her children her marriage is solid amid false rumours of her husband David cheating.
She revealed all to Vogue magazine as the couple holidayed in the South of France.
The couple sat down with seven-year-old daughter Harper, and her three teenage brothers to reassure them their marriage was solid after David was falsely linked to another woman.
The interview with the magazine was initially intended to mark her 10 years in fashion. But she wanted to address claims which swept social media three months ago that she was divorcing, reports thesun.co.uk.
The fashion designer, 44, requested her husband to join her for the cover photograph – though a “sultry” solo one of Victoria was also taken.
A friend said the Beckhams are always “transparent” with their children.
Sources said: “Allegations about the state of their marriage and ridiculous claims about David are extremely hurtful, and obviously potentially very distressing for the kids.
“Whilst publicly they maintained a united front by laughing off the rumours, behind closed doors they’ve taken them much more seriously. They sat the children down and addressed these horrific, hurtful whispers.
“Both David and Victoria are very transparent with the kids to ensure they hear things directly from them – and not from the playground. After the latest furore, they once again took the decision to be open and honest with them, reassuring them Daddy is not a cheat.”

Alberto El Patron Has High Praise For John Cena and CM Punk, Talks Paige’s Retirement
Posted By: Ben Jordan Kerin on Sep 02, 2018
Alberto El Patron recently spoke with Chair Shots to the Cranium and discussed working with John Cena and CM Punk, Paige’s in-ring retirement and more. Below are the highlights, courtesy of WrestlingInc.
On working with John Cena:
“John Cena is fantastic, seriously. I hate when people don’t give Cena the credit he deserves. These days, unfortunately, some fans – not all the fans, but some fans – they think just because you can do 1,000 moonsaults and you can do spot after spot, they think that’s pro wrestling. That’s not real pro wrestling. … If you can create that magic because you have the skills to take fans on a roller coaster of emotions, that’s real pro wrestling, and there’s no one better than Cena. I learned so much from him. That part about going out there having fun, hearing the crowd and trying different things to have a great match and entertain them. I always enjoyed my time in that company in those matches with him.”
On CM Punk:
“I remember one [match] with CM Punk in Japan. Seriously, it was a masterpiece. We got there, we were jet legged, I went out the night before with some friends. [Laughs] And then the next day we had a full house, packed building! The vibe in the building was amazing. Punk and I are really good friends. I have nothing but respect for everything he’s done in his career and his MMA career. Because it takes a lot of guts, you have to be a real man to take that challenge to go inside the cage and fight.”
On Paige’s in-ring retirement:
“Well to be honest my friend, I closed that book a long time ago. I wish nothing but the best to Paige. It’s too bad she cannot wrestle anymore. Cause like you just said it, she has a lot of talent. I remember saying this once, she could have been the most successful Diva of all-time, but things happen.”

Messi and Suarez combine as Barcelona score 8
Pair score two apiece as Catalans crush newly-promoted Huesca to join Real atop La Liga
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi celebrates scoring their sixth goal with Luis Suarez.
Madrid: A magical Lionel Messi and on-form Luis Suarez scored doubles apiece as champions Barcelona thrashed newly-promoted Huesca 8-2 to join Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on Sunday.
Barcelona’s third win of the campaign in as many games saw Ernesto Valverde’s men go top thanks to superior goal difference over Real before the break for Nations League matches.
Celta Vigo, who stunned Atletico Madrid 2-0 on Saturday, sit in third place at two points adrift with Atletico now five points adrift of the top after a shaky start to the campaign.
Huesca travelled to the Camp Nou perhaps more in hope than belief, although it was the latter that dominated the Aragaon-based minnows’ thinking in the early stages after Cucho Hernandez headed past Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to hand them a surprise third-minute lead.
But reality soon kicked in, a slick Messi levelling in the 16th minute after leaving right-back Luisinho on the deck on his way to beating Argentine goalkeeper Axel Werner.
Eight minutes later VAR was deployed to confirm an own goal from defender Jorge Pulido, who got his foot to Jordi Alba’s cutback before it wriggled past Werner and into the net.
Alba, recently left out of Spain’s squad by former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, was in the thick of it again on 39 minutes when he set up Suarez to put Barca 3-1 in front by the 39th minute with his maiden goal of the campaign.
Although Alex Gallar pulled one back for the visitors three minutes before the interval when he turned in Hernandez’s deflected cross to reduce arrears to 3-2, it merely delayed a second-half onslaught.
Level with Benzema
Barca emerged from the dressing room to hit five goals, Ousmane Dembele starting the rout with an angled drive that beat Werner on 48 minutes.
Four minutes later Ivan Rakitic’s superb half-volley from Messi’s delivery had the Camp Nou on its feet.
Messi doubled his tally for the night on the hour mark to make it four in three games and completed his night’s work by setting up Jordi Alba for a magnificent seventh nine minutes from the final whistle.
Barcelona made it eight in the final seconds of the game when Suarez stepped up to beat Werner from the spot.
“It’s always important to be top of the league but it’s barely started,” Suarez told beIN Sports.
“The championship is very long and the main thing is to keep on doing as we are.”
Messi’s haul of four goals means he is level with Real striker Karim Benzema, the Argentine star foregoing the opportunity to take the sole lead of the scoring charts when he allowed Suarez to hit the late penalty.
With a question mark still hanging over his international career, Messi is expected to return from the international break rested having decided not to play for Argentina during the international break.
