The length of the mosquito life cycle varies between species and is dependent upon environmental conditions such as temperature and moisture. However, the life cycle of all mosquitoes is comprised of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females mosquitoes extract the blood of hosts in order to develop and nourish eggs. Most mosquitoes lay their eggs directly in water. Others lay their eggs near bodies of water but not within them. Almost any source of water found on a homeowner’s property can attract mosquitoes. Eggs will hatch into larvae within 24 to 48 hours. Mosquitoes are notorious for their involvement in disease transmission, creating annoyance, interfering with outdoor recreation activities, and even ruining a good night's sleep.

Kitesurfing at La Paz bay - not necessarily a very popular activity here vs. the kiteboarders spots at El Sargento to La Ventana on the Sea of Cortez / Gulf of California site. Still a nice location. We talked to some of the surfers and they like the less challenging conditions. Sounds perfect for beginners.....

Wearing a face mask will help prevent the spread of infection and prevent the individual from contracting any airborne infectious germs. When someone coughs, talks, sneezes they could release germs into the air that may infect others nearby. Face masks are part of an infection control strategy to eliminate cross-contamination.

Mexico’s other epidemic: Murdered women! Domestic violence has spiked in Mexico during its coronavirus-related lockdown. According to a national network of women’s shelters, calls for help were up 60% in April. Even before the pandemic, however, women in Mexico felt under siege. In one of the world’s most violent countries, women are raped, murdered and kidnapped with stunning frequency, and the problem is growing. In 2018, Mexico saw seven femicides – the legal term for the murder of a woman – a day.
This year, on average, 10 Mexican women are murdered every day. In February, just before the pandemic hit, two gruesome killings that took place days apart in Mexico City made national headlines.
Midmonth, 25-year-old Ingrid Escamilla was murdered, skinned and partially disemboweled. Her mutilated body became a public spectacle after police who responded at the scene leaked pictures that the media reproduced. Days later, seven-year-old Fátima Aldrighett – kidnapped while waiting for her mother to pick her up from school – was found naked in a plastic bag. Police identified signs of sexual abuse and torture.
While surveillance video resulted in the arrest of two people for Aldrighett’s case, Escamilla’s killing remains unsolved - a common outcome of murder investigations in Mexico.
After the two gruesome killings in one week, President Andres Manuel López Obrador blamed violence against women on the neoliberal policies of his right-wing predecessors and dismissed Mexico’s growing feminist movement as a plot orchestrated by his right-wing opposition.
The Mexican government’s dismissive response to femicides sparked intense criticism from feminists, and in March López Obrador’s administration unveiled a comprehensive plan to protect Mexican women. It promised to reopen government-funded domestic violence shelters and daycare facilities that were shuttered due to budget cuts last year and launch a smartphone app to report street harassment.
Femicides are a major public health problem for Mexico, too – one that will outlast the pandemic. According to the government, 367 women were killed between mid-March and mid-April, the first month of social distancing. Last spring, there were about 300 femicides a month.
Tumblr media
Several of Mexico’s recent victims were girls, such as 13-year-old Ana Paola, who was raped and murdered inside her northern Mexico home on April 2. President López Obrador likewise continues to downplay the problem of violence against women, claiming without factual basis that “90%” of calls to domestic abuse hotlines are fake.“ But other members of his administration appear to be taking the issue more seriously.
"We have a patriarchal system,” said Mexican Secretary of the Interior Olga Sánchez Cordero on May 20, confirming the administration’s commitment to study Mexico’s gender violence problem and propose concrete, actionable solutions.
On May 26, Sánchez Cordero’s office released its report, which said Mexican authorities had lacked coordination in femicide investigations and promised to restructure how various federal agencies work together to solve these crimes. Later that same day, the government launched a public awareness campaign about domestic violence. Its concrete, actionable solution for femicides? Advising men who feel angry to breathe deep and “count to 10.”

Mexico’s consumer watchdog, Profeco, said on Friday it won a class-action lawsuit against the local unit of U.S. telecommunications giant AT&T Inc for undue charges and poor service. Profeco said that in 2013 it sued telecommunications operator Nextel, which was acquired by AT&T in 2015, for undue charges, changing rates without informing customers and continuing to charge clients for services that had been canceled.
Nextel offered 4G technology on its website though “it was proven in court the technology provided was inferior to what was advertised, underscoring the use of abusive and false advertising to prompt consumers into mistakenly acquiring their services,” Profeco said in a statement.

Mexico should get a pat on the back and mutual afford to combined battle the issues on both sides of the border should be deepened instead of getting kicked in the balls and threatened with economic measures that would worsen the problems.
Interesting read here, in particular in relation to constant Mexico bashing by Trump and his goons and the false narrative that the US opioid crisis has been created by the country we live in.

Goldman Sachs analysts expect the U.S. to announce its intention to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, a move with the potential to throw the Mexican peso and Canadian dollar for a loop.
The Goldman analysts expect the dollar to shoot up to 20-21 pesos, compared with 18.8985 pesos in Wednesday trading, should their U.S. trade-policy uncertainty index climb back to where it was immediately after last year’s presidential election.

October Mexico's deadliest month on record
October was the deadliest month in Mexico since the government first began recording homicides two decades ago, with a staggering 2,371 murder investigations opened nationwide last month.
Tumblr media
An average of 69 people were killed each day in Mexico in 2017 as the country grapples with widespread drug trafficking, cartel violence and high-level corruption. On Monday, human rights ombudsman Silvestre de la Toba Camacho and his 20-year-old son were assassinated in La Paz the capital city of Baja California Sur, according to Mexican authorities.
Their deaths reflect a growing epidemic of violence in the country. The Mexican government began a militarized crackdown on drug trafficking about a decade ago that has dramatically backfired.

The government’s strategy bypassed regional authorities and institutions, leaving them vulnerable to criminal influence, the International Crisis Group said in a report earlier this year. View the full report here
