I get asked often about textures and brush settings- As per request, here are some of my regular faves. These are four I made by scanning in all kinds of pencil and pen marks, then just doing a lot of fussing with settings and numbers until I got something good ahaha. There’s really no secret to making brushes, it’s just a lot of experimentation; but it ends up really worth it, and you learn a lot about what you want 🙌
You can download them from -> this google drive folder of mine!
(These are .tpl files fyi; photoshop only. You’ll also find they’re rather large brushes, simply because I work in large 300+ dpi files)

“Tell me the story about how the sun loved the moon so much he died every night to let her breathe.” “ there once was a moon, as beautiful as can be, only the stars could fathom, but the sun could not see. The sun so radiant, he burns so bright. The moon so luminous, but only shows her face during the night. Wounded and raged, the sun cries and cries, so sad he hides from the skies hoping to see her. The days become dark, because the sun will not shine. The waves crash so harsh on the shoreline because there is a storm breaching on the inside. If the sun couldn’t see the moon, he would find another way to display his love. While the sun was thinking, the moon was astray. You see..the moon loves the sun so much, that when he is away, she chooses not to take a single breath, because not seeing him today, is a pain worse than death. the sun can not see but he can hear, he can feel her soul and it soon became clear. The sun would die each and every night to let his true love breathe, for it would put an end to all her misery. ” “ a tale like this should be heard and seen.” “And no one will know it is the story of you and me.”
THIS WAS WRITTEN BY ME, MAKAYLA ELIZABETH ALLGIRE, AND IF YOU COPYWRITE THIS ..I WILL FIND YOU..AND I WILL KILL YOU.

Is Photoshop applying the same texture to every brush in your set?
And even though you’ve triple checked to make sure all brush options are not locked, any texture change you make to one brush is made to all of your brushes?
Got a fix for ya.
Texture, in particular, is a feature that where this problem occurs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Brush Preset pallet, TURN OFF “Protect Texture” if it’s on (mine was for some reason) and don’t lock it.
In the drop-down menu, select “Reset All Locked Settings” and reselect any brush in your set. You’ll see that they all now have their own custom texture settings again. Adobe at some point thought it was a grand old idea to have options to make all textures on your brush set identical in image, scale, and depth. Maybe they had something good going for a certain group of people, but for me it was ruining all of my brushes. Hope that helps.

Default brushes are actually not the devil.
I created all of these textures using various brushes within the “assorted brushes” category in Photoshop with settings like size and angle jitters and scattering applied and opacity controlled by pen pressure. Any brush on Photoshop can be used to create an interesting and unique texture if you use it right, even the dreaded default brushes.
I actually didn’t think the star would work when I started it, but it ended up looking like watercolor. Is that not the coolest thing?

I know some people who are pretty new to making Photoshop brushes so I thought I’d share this easy textured one I made for one of my current paintings. I used the default hard round brush for my base but you could attach these settings to any kind of brush to give it a kind of pencilly look.

I made this handy video - I get asked a lot about how to remove unwanted overlapping edges in digital watercolor. Here you go! Please reblog this if your followers are digital artists. Thanks.

A little tutorial for how to make some useful photoshop brushes. It’s hopefully usable even if you only have a basic understanding of photoshop.
By the way, he numbers don’t need to be precise. Never mind the 41%, it can totally be 40% (mine was at 41% because that’s where is ended up when I played with the slider). I rounded the other numbers, but this one stayed like that, for some reason.

People ask me what brushes I use, and really it’s a hard question because I use many (this is a small sampling of some favorites) and because I also tweak brush settings constantly and encourage you to do the same. In Photoshop, you can turn stock brushes into amazing tools by simply experimenting with the transfer, direction, texture, and dual brush settings. I say experimenting because that’s seriously the best part of it. In the digital medium, it’s easy to make things look synthetic, but often your most random and loose of efforts will yield the most exciting results. This is just what I use, but figured I would put them down for those curious enough to draw inspiration from and start fiddling with making your own.
