It's an underhanded tactic, one that Mercedes feels a pang of hesitation about. Wishes she held a staff in her hands instead of the tome in her hands. If only she could call upon the goddess' light to heal her ally rather than hurt her foe. Sonya's strategy is wise though, even if it does leave a bitter taste in her mouth. Mercedes swallows it down, for the time being. She can give nothing less than her all.
"I'm sorry about this," maybe she should save the apologies for later, instead of giving a hint to her opponent. Still, it relieves her of a little guilt as she strikes. "I'll do my best!"
Mercedes 6.5/7 HP attacks Ethlyn 1/8.5 HP with Shine Roll d20: 19! Hit -1.5 damage. Ethlyn's Miracle triggers! Ethlyn has 1/8.5 HP remaining Ethlyn counterattacks with Assault. Roll d20: 17! Hit -1.5 damage reduced by Mercedes' Resistance asset Mercedes has 6/7 HP remaining
The force of her spell knocks Ethlyn backwards. Mercedes holds her breath, thinking she'd done enough to knock her out of the competition. A flash of light comes from Ethlyn chest though and she remains steady and standing, able to lift her staff and take revenge for her trickery.
"Sonya, are you holding up alright? I don't think she'll be able to take another hit."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sonya. You look radiant today," Mercedes compliments her partner, clutching the Shine tome to her chest as she speaks. Her voice lilts as she takes in the violet haired mage, a beauty who carries herself with pride. The way only an accomplished woman can. She giggles slightly as she continues. "I'm glad we're partners and not opponents. I think I might get a tad distracted otherwise."
Compliments aside, Mercedes turns her attention to their challengers. Two of the Knight of Seiros, one a long haired gentleman wielding a blade - a newcomer, Mercedes thinks to herself. It's the first time she's seen him at least. She does try and say hello to everyone she comes across. The other face is more familiar. Lady Ethlyn Claus Wait, isn't she Altena's mother?
"Hi Mrs Claus! Is Altena doing well?" Mercedes asks, checking in on her friend. There's a hint of regret as she raises her hand to cast her spell but Mercedes reminds herself this is a friendly competition. She isn't face to face with her friend's mother trying to rob each other of their lives. "Sorry, this isn't personal. I hope we can have tea together afterwards. All four of us, in fact."
"I won't let you down though, Sonya! You were excellent!"
Mercedes 7/7 HP attacks Ethlyn 7/8.5 HP with Shine. Roll d20: 12! Hit -1.5 damage. Ethlyn 5.5/8.5 HP counters with Assault. Roll d20: 10! Hit -1.5 damage. Reduced to 0.5 from Mercedes' +1 resistance. Mercedes has 6.5/7 HP remaining
Her aim is true but so is Ethlyn's. Luckily for Mercedes her resistance to magic was one of her greatest strengths. It does little to phase her, even taking the hit head on.
"I hope I didn't disappoint anyone." A glance is sent Sonya's way in particular but she also isn't here to make it easy for their opponents either. Mercedes may not be particularly competitive herself but she knows not putting up a fight would be insulting. She cannot promise a win, understands that despite her own skill and Sonya's magnificent mastery of magic that Lady Ethlyn and Rutger are talented and well trained too.
But she is representing Professor Ayra here in more ways than one. So whatever the outcome, nothing but her very best is acceptable.

A swell of magic through the air. The Lich's mouth, held wide in a voiceless scream just seconds ago begins to make a raucous, painful sound. Eerie eyes seem to glaze over with untold power. A warning sign, telling them to run. But inside a simulation, where is there to even run to? No, they all must stand and fight. Yet there are still ways to utilise magic in order to mitigate such a risk.
"Everyone, stay back a second. It possesses a powerful magic," Mercedes calls out to her friends, urging them to take great care. "I think I can lock it down again though."
Mercedes casts Silence on Golden Lich Roll d20+6: 4+6 = 10! Hit. Golden Lich has been silenced
"There we go! It should be safe for you all to attack now. It can't bite back!" The poison in the air still bites at their lungs, however. Mercedes doubles over, coughing as she tries to push posionous air out only to take more in. "S-sorry! This place really is awful, isn't it?"
Mercedes takes -1 damage from Poison Bog. 5.5/10 HP remaining.

The terrain is hostile. The air painful and difficult to breathe. Mercedes realises that trying to heal her friends puts them at risk. One she isn't willing to take, not yet whilst they have a clear advantage that she could steal away with one wrong move. Their foe though, undead and uncanny cowers away from her faith magic.
It's a gamble, she realises but she cannot think of any other way to meaningfully contribute to the fight before them. With steady, slow breaths she conjures a Fortify spell, letting it hover above her hands.
Linus, Volke, Valter and Chad - dear friends forged in flame. It is not meant for them
Mercedes (6.5/10 HP) attacks Golden Lich (11/15) with Fortify! Roll d20: 15! -6 HP damage. Golden Lich has 5/15 HP remaining. Golden Lich cannot counter due to Silence
The risk she takes leads to reward. Not only does her spell have the intended effect but her foe can't brace itself, can not mitigate the damage. It recoils backward, face contorted in pain. Mercedes turns her attention away.
"It seems like healing magic causes it a lot of pain. I think if we take it out, we can win."

"Oh dear. Don't worry Chad, I can put a stop to him," Mercedes barely has time to catch her breath but Chad's concern is palpable and frankly warranted. Volke could do serious damage to their enemies but the state he's in right now, he could turn on any one of them. She catches her own words though and turns back to them, a hand on their shoulder. "Don't worry, I mean I'll put a stop to him gently. Bring him back to his old self. I won't hurt him at all!" She turns on her heel, head in Volke's direction before stopping for a moment.
"I really liked your moves, Chad! Maybe we can dance together sometime?" Anytime really, as long as they aren't fighting an endless stream of vicious enemies at least.
Mercedes is careful not to get too close to Volke just yet. She hovers at an awkward distance, not in range of his axe but close enough to cast her own spell at him. Close enough to run if his attention turned to her. Thankfully, he seems distracted for the time being, allowing Mercedes ample time to cast Restore. Within seconds their mysterious protector appears to become aware of the reality surrounding them, rather than lost in his own reverie. She takes a few steps forward.
"Feeling any better, sir? Don't worry, you didn't hurt anyone!" Mercedes offers him a hand, unsure if he's okay with being touched. It's there if he wants to take it, no hard feelings either way. "Let's get back to the fray, shall we? Unless there's something else I can do for you before we go?"

Linus' voice carries across the battlefield, leading her through the dirty, damp swamp towards his side. The air here is hard to breathe, cloying in it's weight but bitter in her mouth. Everything around them is tinged with decay. Her stomach lurches uncomfortably but her heart feels heavy with the weight of what must have been lost here.
It's just a simulation, Mercedes tries to remind herself. Pays attention instead to Linus and his enthusiasm, things that warm her heart instead.
"Good work, Linus! Let's focus on the Lich now everyone," she smiles warmly at him, trying to take on his confidence as her own. "I'll show you what I can do too!"
Mercedes casts Silence on Golden Lich! Roll d20+8: 15+8 = 23! Crit! Golden Lich is inflicted with Silence (for three phases after this one) and Void (for one round)
The beast screeches and caws before it's even been attacked. The sound is grating on it's own but she can sense a great, ancient and mysterious magic emanating from the Lich. Best to shut that down before any of her friends are hurt.
"I think someone is being a little too loud." Mercedes quips as she cast the spell. It does it's job perfectly, the Lich's mouth opens wide in a scream but not a single sound is heard. Finally, some peace and quiet.
"It can't use magic anymore! Feel free to attack it until it's down!"

Scorching hands reach out for her, grasping her by the arm. Mercedes expects her skin to bubble and blister but she's able to resist whatever foul magic has her in it's clutches. She manages to wrench herself away but when she calls upon Ivaldi's might she finds herself to flustered. Her spell misses completely, soaring off into the distance.
"I'm sorry. I promise I'll do better next time." Mercedes apologise profusely to her teammates before being assaulted by blazes of Magma. It burns like an inferno and she's barely able to hold on to the reins of her horse.
Mercedes (2/10 HP) recovers 2HP from Amaterasu (Volke) and Bond (Chad). Mercedes has 4/10 HP remaining.
She will try again and mumbles a quick prayer to Sothis before attacking. This may not be a real battle. Mercedes is aware this is a training exercise, no one is going to lose their life here. Yet the pain they feel is completely real, agonising in it's intensity. Linus continues to burn alive and oh goddess, she hopes it's not quite so intense as reality.
He'll walk away at the end of their trials whole but... Mercedes hopes she can help heal the emotional pain. Make him smile - make all of them smile. They're all precious to her, perhaps some a little more than others (Chad reminds her of Emile, feels like the younger brother she is yet to let down atrociously) but all of them dear to her heart. Her spell has to find it's mark, for their sake.
Mercedes attacks Supreme Infernal Mistress (10/10HP*) with Ivaldi! Roll d20: 7! Hit -5 damage dealt Halved. -2.5 Supreme Infernal Mistress (7.5/10 HP*)cannot counter! Knight Ring activates
Her attention turns to Volke, desperately injured as he is and stuck fighting back on his own two feet. She stands by him, calling on the healing light of Recover but is left disappointed. Her efforts are pitiful. Mercedes' head hangs low as she mumbles out an apology.
Mercedes (4/10 HP) heals Volke (3/10 HP) with Recover. Roll d20: 2. 3 HP restored Volke has 6/10 HP remaining
"I.. I'm so very sorry. This is all I can do right now. Please be careful, I wish I could do more..."

"Let's try and stop these Magma Pillars from shooting us with fire again! I'll go first!" Mercedes declares, empowered by the desire to protect the others. It's attacks seem more daunting and painful than those of the Mistress, cloaked in flame and glory. "We can do this if we work together."
Mercedes (4/10 HP) attacks Magma Pillar A (15/15 HP)with Ivaldi. Roll d20: 17! Hit! 3 damage +2 from boosted Resistance = 5 damage. Magma Pillar A (10/15 HP) cannot counterattack. Mercedes Knight Ring activates!
"Things are going pretty well. I'm glad we're in this together," Mercedes says quietly to Chad, her gaze trained away from Linus. Guilt clutches at her throat. If she had a Restore staff, or even the incantation written down somewhere then maybe she could do more to help him. She can't keep her gaze averted for too long though, cares too much about him to ignore his plight. Though she has to focus on what she can do, rather than that which she can't. Her healing magic seems to be blocked by the wall of flames climbing up his clothes. "Here, let's keep you topped up. You're doing great work, Chad."
"All of you have been indispensable to our efforts," this time her voice carries across the battlefield. Sweet Chad, dear Linus, the quiet but powerful Volke and Valter, who is oddly cheerful about spilling blood - they've only made it this far by relying on each other. Her voice reaches all her allies but her words are especially meant for their mysterious, silent protector who seems to her the most lonely. "So thank you, for being my teammates and hopefully future friends. Stay safe and stay close."
Mercedes (6/10 HP) heals Chad (7/10 HP) with Recover. Roll d20: 3. 3 HP restored. Chad has 10/10 HP remaining. Work smart not hard kids.

The first thing Mercedes hears upon coming to is Linus shouting. She raises her head, listening in and finds he's sharing encouraging words with their quietest teammate. Despite his coarse language, there's warmth and kindness in his words and actions. Besides, it's heartwarming to see him so passionate about their fight.
"Linus, your enthusiasm is infectious but..." Mercedes trails off, casting a furtive glance at their opponent across the battlefield. She seems rather tame, especially in comparison to the last mob they faced but something stirs uncomfortably in her stomach. The creep of flames up her skin. "Please do be careful. I'll try to keep you patched up if you get hurt but I'd prefer you weren't in pain to begin with."
Clasping the tome in her hands, Mercedes scans the text and closes it before making her way towards the Infernal Mistress, cloaked in fire and brimstone. Unused to casting with a tome in her hands, she simply recalls and repeats the words she wrote. The outcome could have been worse, but it's nothing to brag about either.
Mercedes (5/10 HP) heals +2 HP from Bond (Chad) and Amaterasu (Volke) Mercedes (7/10 HP) attacks Supreme Infernal Mistress (10/10 HP) Roll d20: 5! Barely hit for -2 damage. + 2 damage from res. Supreme Infernal Mistress' shield reduces all incoming damage by 50% -2 damage dealt. Supreme Infernal Mistress has 8/10 HP remaining.
"Thank you for taking care of us all," Mercedes says to Chad, making her way to their side on horseback. More than a healer of wounds, they've been a well of hope for her during their trials. "I'll take care of you in turn. You're vital to our team."
Mercedes (7/10) heals Chad (6/10) with Recover. Roll d20: 16. +6 HP restored Chad has 10/10 HP.

The Connector 18/18 HP attacks Mercedes 5.5/10 HP with Lyration. Roll 2d20: 6, 6! 2 Hits! -4 damage. Mercedes has 1.5/10 HP remaining
The Connector targets her again and there's nothing she can do to fight back. She can only thank Sothis it takes aim at her, rather than Chad or Volke. The silhouette that once resembled Dimitri shifts, now the spitting image of the Imperial princess sets the battlefield ablaze. Mercedes makes a paltry attempt to shield the pair of them from the flames but it's to no avail. Fire climbs up their clothing, tongues lashing at bare skin.
"Chad no! Be careful!" Mercedes tries to reach out for them, to take their shoulder and reassure them. They can get through this, can't they? Hope is all she has but it grows weak in the hellfire that surrounds them. They're far out of reach by the time her body, lethargic and sore can react.
Please, let them hear her. Let them take her words to heart.
"Volke, hold still please. I know I failed last time but," Mercedes voice trails off, focusing instead on lifting the Ruyi staff despite the blaze she's caught up in. They're both in a sorry state, poisoned and set aflame. Hopefully she can at least relieve some of the pain. "I want to help you. I will help you."
Mercedes uses Ruyi on Volke. Roll d20: 7! Hit. One status transferred from Volke to a random enemy. Roll d4: 3! The Connector is now burning. Mercedes takes -2 HP damage from burning. Mercedes has been defeated.
Her head swims as her legs give out. Was that too much? The strength rushes from her body. Mercedes smiles, despite the pain and fear. She managed to help, if only a little. Help her precious friends. That's all a person like herself can really hope for in this life. Her eyes flutter shut.
It's been such a hard day.

The Connector (18/18 HP) attacks Mercedes (4.5/10 HP) with Lyration. (Roll: 11, 1) Hit and Miss. -2 damage. Mercedes (2.5/10 HP)
A scream is torn from her throat, not from the blade slicing at her skin but the sight of Linus, brought to his knees. Her own body aches but it's for her friends she weeps. Chad makes it to her side, healing her wounds but she still has to swallows down her tears.
At least she can return the favour.
Mercedes (6.5/10 HP) restores 2 HP from Renewal (8.5/10 HP) Mercedes heals Chad with Recover. Roll d20: 11! Good Heal. +6 HP restored to Chad. Chad has 10/10 HP Mercedes takes 1 damage from Toxic Poison. (7.5/10 HP)
"Be careful Chad, our enemies are relentless. It's just the three of us left," Mercedes whispers, barely audible above the din of battle, the clash of steel and singe of magic in the air. Every time she's seen one of their allies fall it has felt like a lance straight through her heart. She knows now that they're not dead at least but the moment they fall, the pain written on their features... She wouldn't wish it on anyone, least of all their youngest, who looks at her so very kindly. "It would break my heart if something happened to you. Please, stay close and let me keep you safe."

The battlefield is deafening and she can barely stand. Sothis, let her rest, please. Stumbling forward to meet her allies, she thinks she sees Dimitri ahead. Surely he wouldn't hurt them though, sweet, kind Dimitri who looks heartbroken when he breaks her scissors. It can't possibly be him, she knows that in her heart.
Then the vision shifts. Edelgard? Claude? What on earth is she looking at? A confusing illusion, one she fights to draw her gaze away from.
There are people here that need her.
And people she needs. Linus rushes to her side and whilst he's clearly more comfortable with an axe in hand, he heals her the best he can. The gesture touches her deeply, affection blooming like roses in her chest. She can stand taller, straighter now. All the better to face what lies ahead.
Mercedes has 4HP restored -> 4.5/10 HP remaining.
"Thank you, Linus. That's a big help!" Mercedes places a hand on his arm, gentle and encouraging. She can see in his eyes he's frustrated with himself, despite pulling her back from the edge of unconsciousness. "I mean it, I felt like I was about to pass out. I can try and help the others now, thanks to your blessing."
She'd like to stop with him, insist how grateful she is until he truly believes it himself. The others fight on though, so she parks that up for another time and heads to Volke's side.
"You're looking sturdier, I need to thank Chad. Here, let me try something to help you feel even better."
Renewal restores 2 HP to Mercedes. 6.5/10 HP remaining. Mercedes uses Ruyi on Volke to transfer toxic poison to an enemy. Roll d20: 5! Miss Mercedes takes 1 damage from toxic poison. 5.5/10 HP remaining
Raising the ornate staff in the air she prays to Sothis, envisions herself lifting the poison from Volke and into one of their foes. The poison in her own veins bites viciously, sapping her strength and throwing off her concentration. At the last second, she falters.
Mercedes clenches her jaw. She's so tired of all the fighting she has to will herself not to cry.
"Sorry. I messed that up. I can try again if you like?"

Her vision clear once more, Mercedes watches as Linus, who looks like Atlas holding the world upon his shoulders, falls to the cruel beasts rampage. It's a horrifying sight, one that she find branded upon the back of her eyelids. She whispers the incantation to cast a Recover spell but it's far too late. The light in her hands fades slowly as Mercedes stares at them, wondering when this carnage will end.
But praying won't help them now. It's much easier for her to be passive and let the tide take her where it wishes. That will not do today.
If she wants the bloodshed to stop she'll have to put an end to it with her own hands. With the bow strapped against her back. So once more she nocks an arrow and pulls back. With her field of vision restored her aim is easier to find.
"This is for Chad and Linus!"
Roll d20+2: 14+2 = 16! Crit! 3/2 = 1.5 damage. Kelpie cannot counterattack. Mercedes has 1.5/10 HP remaining Kelpie has 3.5/12 HP remaining
Something odd happens, perhaps spores kicked up from the bog around them? Whatever it is catches in her nose and throat, prickling incessantly and catching her under it's spell. Drowsy, with heavy limbs, she falls into a deep sleep.
Mercedes takes 1 damage from Poison. 0.5/10 HP remaining

Mercedes chest tightens as she tries to inhale. Even the air here is poisonous. The Kelpie lurches forwards and tiny spores burst forth, dancing in the air.
Kelpie attacks with Dance of the Fungi: Roll d20+4: 18+4 22! Critical hit. Mercedes is inflicted with Isolation and Void until the next player phase.
All of a sudden, Mercedes finds herself alone. She can hear the others, distant and muffled but very much there. But they sound so far away and there is nothing for her to see except the Kelpie bearing yellowed and broken teeth at her. Folklore and tales had told her these creatures were beautiful, captivating in their grace and alluring. Mercedes feels nothing but revulsion as it's beady little eyes bore into her.
She hears a sob, one that makes her heart skip a beat. A sound so painful, of one so young rendered powerless.
The only thing Mercedes can do is draw her bow. To fight, battle through the darkness to the side of whoever needed her. She draws the bowstring back as far as she can reasonably hold it to aim, behind her ear as she searches for a weak spot. The Kelpie moves swiftly though and her arrow flies, landing in it's rump rather than anywhere particularly deadly.
Mercedes uses Deadeye against Kelpie. Roll d20-1: 9-1 = 8. Hit! -1 damage. -1 BP Kelpie had 5/12 HP and 3/4 BP remaining Kelpie cannot counterattack (Melee attacked by ranged weapon.
It still screeches in pain, darting out of her field of view as fast as it can. Her stomach drops as she considers it may have left to assault her friends. Or come back to her before her vision clears and she can find her way to them once more.

"Hey, lass, ya really kept your head out there. Pretty impressive," Linus whistled, giving her a slight nudge with his elbow. "Much as I ain't a fan of it, was smart to bring along some healin'."
It might not have outright allowed some of them to survive through 'til the end, but if she hadn't brought it along, they might not have barely scrapped by as it was.
"Ya got a good head on your shoulders. 'Tween you and the kid -- I dunno, maybe the quiet guy, too -- ya got the braincells in this group. If ya got a plan, I'll do my best to make sure it happens!"
"I'm not really surprised to hear that," Mercedes laughs as the axe-wielder introduces himself. Or doesn't - he never actually mentions his name. "Please don't take this the wrong way, you just seem like someone who prefers fighting on the frontlines. I admire your courage, you were so brave earlier!"
She's quiet for a moment, guilt weighing heavy as a stone in her stomach. Her goal had been to keep them all safe, a task which she failed miserably. He still seems chipper and grateful though, despite taking such a beating.
It's incredibly kind of him to approach her like this, bright and reassuring as he is. Mercedes decides to do her best to return the favour with a smile on her face.
"Your attitude is infectious! I feel like I'm in safe hands with you around. Don't hesitate to let me know if you need a little support though, I'll do my best to help us all get through this."
