“all our fantasies are colonial”
since the new pokemon snap was announced, i’ve been thinking about how.. there’s something so tragic about how the destructive processes of global capitalism—much of which fuels, and is fueled, by the games industry—have been eviscerating ecosystems, extincting over a hundred species…every day, just to give us mass produced simulacra of wildlife, hordes of identical smiling peekachew animatronics, eating apples and dancing for your entertainment.
the corporations who make pokemon snap possible have been destroying the lives of colonized peoples and non-human worlds for centuries, and what they haven’t destroyed they’ve rendered into commodity. and we (many of us living in north amerika) have been trained to feel pleasure in the consumption of those commodities, pleasure in witnessing the exotic through tourism and television programs about Africa…pleasure in mastery: in having the vastness, intricacy, illegibility, terror and vitality of the world violently domesticated. they stole the land, emptied it out, and sold it to us as landscape.
all this for what? for a $60 ticket to humanmade virtual islands, for collecting photos of lapras and snorlax to your heart’s content. the world of pokemon snap is meticulously crafted theme park, a colonial ego trip of discovery, capture and collection: all the pleasures of the safari without having to travel anywhere or steal land.
after all, the dirty work has been taken care of for you. games like pokemon snap allow you to experience the pleasures of tourism bloodlessly, but the fact remains that both the creation and experience of simulated safari are financed by wealth accrued through colonialism and imperialism. (thinking about how amerika’s stolen wealth was funneled into japan in the mid1900s as the cold war prompted the former to economically shore up the latter as “a bulwark against communism” in east asia.) ongoing historical processes..
***
i think it’s true that these discussions exceed the question of morality or guilt in individual consumption. and yet. it’s also necessary for us to reflect deeply on the direction of our pleasures: to shine a light on what we consume and enjoy, as well as to reaffirm the plasticity of our desires. after all, taste, enjoyment, and desire are not just..innate, inexplicable or immutable facets of ourselves. capital is always already training and shaping our desires and imaginations in its image. ditto whiteness. until it becomes undesirable, if not unimaginable, to feel and create joy and novelty by ourselves, to indulge in fantasies that aren’t colonial.
and: while it’s true that self-centering, self-flagellating white shame is useless…it’s also true that (paraphrasing something a friend said) guilt is a natural response to the recognition of our complicity, however “unwilled,” in capitalism, settler-colonialism, anti-Blackness. processing my own place in this world and thinking about my relations under global capitalism to other people as well as to non-human beings involves processing guilt. it’s part of thinking about how i can..not somehow erase my complicity, but work against it. how i can antagonize instead of adhere, how i can redistribute the capital that i have/have access to to those most affected by and vulnerable to violence, rather than give it to fucking nintendo, to keep indulging in fantasies that are not only of but produced by colonial violence.

N: A cup of hot tea really heals your soul this is true science
Cheren: Actually a cup of hot anything in your hands mimics human warmth which is said to have calming properties. So yes, it's true. Tea mimics the need for human care, touch and recognition.
N: I'm going to cry I'm so lonely now and all I have is this fucking cup of leaf water
