I got the call for this shoot when I was on set in Guadalajara, and found myself searching for flights to La Paz during my lunch break. After three 12-hour days, I flew back to Mexico City for work, and took the earliest flight out the next morning to La Paz because when L’Officiel calls... you answer. Why it’s problematic to say you don’t see color or you’re “colorblind” when it comes to race: because whether you see it or not, racism exists, it is systemic, it is built into our laws and our daily lives and our education systems, it is a product of this global capitalist and colonial society. And saying that you “don’t see it” is more indicative of our own privilege and ignorance than of our blind optimism that racism doesn’t exist. This feels obvious but if I’m over feeling annoyed and exhausted that white people in the public eye continue to use these statements to try to defend themselves, that people are literally saying “well I have a Black / native / Mexican” friend in defense of their prejudices, then I can’t imagine how tired people of color are. Maybe it’s misleading wearing a headscarf and talking about Turkey, because a headscarf is more a symbol of Islam than it is of the Turkish country- but I’ve been feeling a LOT of love from my Turkish friends recently so... here we are. If you ever have a chance to go to Turkey, GO. If you ever have a chance to eat Turkish food, EAT. And if you ever have a chance to befriend a Turkish person, DO IT. They’re everywhere. And the friendship and strength of Turkish friends-as-family has changed my life for the better 😜🇹🇷😋 I would extend that to say if you have the chance to befriend anyone outside of your normal circle or culture, do it- because you’ll find that we are all more similar than different, we are all part of one human family, and the richness of culture and the friendships we build will make us all stronger. Touchdown in my hometown 🕺Who wants to go to the Japanese garden with me? In the 5+ years I’ve spent working and traveling, I’ve never felt as *at home* as I do in Mexico City. A city of twenty million where strangers exchange greetings in passing, where grandparents’ on the corner call me “little skinny” and try to sneak me carbs, where unleashed dogs strut along tree-lined streets more amicably than most men in Manhattan. 😂 This is a country that inspired Salvador Dali to say: “There’s no way I’m going back to Mexico. I can’t stand to be in a country that is more surrealist than my paintings.” And that... is exactly the kind of magic I’m here for. 🙋🏻‍♀️🕺❤️🇲🇽 Tomorrow I’ll fly back to my hometown for the holidays, but Mexico will always be on my mind, and in my dreams.
