      “ JESPER, ”  HE CORRECTS, TILTING HIS HEAD A LITTLE CLOSER TO HERS; as charming as he finds the name she’s given him … he’ll never remember to answer to it.  “ if you’re going to grumble and growl at me all night, you may as well use my name.  leeches already have such a bad reputation — what with being compared to politicians and money hoarders all the time.  it’s quite cruel, there’s no need to further villainise them, ”

oh she is fun.  there isn’t a shred, a modicum, of restraint in this human.  all that energy and anger — he couldn’t be the only one in the hall to have smelled it on her the second she walked in.  if he were a lesser vampire, he probably would have forgone all decorum and tried to sink his teeth into her right there.  

but!  that was messy, and it attracted scavengers.  jesper liked to avoid those, too, at all costs.

“ besides … leeches leave marks.  ugly ones.  you’d never even know when i had my mouth on someone, ”  that much was very true; jesper had mastered the art of somewhat covering his involvement with any exsanguinated bodies that might turn up at local mortuaries.  as they continue towards the balcony, jesper relaxes his shoulders, readies himself for a long night of dodging blows.  he nods at the first waiter they pass, smiling coyly as he takes a glass of champagne; the poor man crashes into another waiter while staring.  “ unless i’m asked to leave a mark.  ahem.  what’s this about needing information?  are you prepared to pay a price for it? ”

jesper. how. . .oddly fitting. jyn muses over the name, lets it sink into her mind as she studies his face, placing the two together in her memory as the association could prove useful in the future. out loud, however, she has no intention of calling him that ; there is little point in humanizing her prey, not when she will inevitably kill him. he is a means to an end, a creature from which she can extract information and nothing more. 

that –– and she can already tell that it will be amusing to continue to push his buttons in this way. 

her lips curl into a sneer at the excess nattering. while she usually doesn’t mind when her marks chatter on aimlessly, usually dropping more hints than they realize, she suspects jesper is the type to talk a lot without saying much. she curls her hand over his arm, nails digging into the fabric of his suit coat and not letting up, even when he plucks a nearby flute of champagne from a passing waiter and causes chaos in his wake. but she doesn’t let go, nor speak, until they’re outside and well beyond the hearing of a normal human. 

“ what a coincidence ! i have also gotten quite good at hiding my marks, ” she replies, eyes flashing. to punctuate her words, she taps her stake against his ribs, a few inches below her target. “ but i reckon we’re talking about two different things here, yeah ? ‘cause the only mark you’ll be getting from me is a hole to the chest. ” a steady beat of adrenaline thrums through her veins ; it’s been all too long since she’s gotten a taste of a hunt –– and a challenge, at that. but at this point in her investigation, he is more useful alive undead than dead. 

“ are you really in the position to be bargaining with me, leech ? as i see it, you’re the one who needs to start talking before i start getting impatient. ” she pauses, mulling over her words and how much she should tell him. “ bodies have been turning up with torn throats and completely drained of blood. you wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, now would you ? ”

there   is   some   tiny  ,    selfish   part   of   him   that   rebels   against   that   notion      –      because   she   reminds   him   of   leia  ,    in   another   life  ,    or   perhaps   of   padme.      bail   buries   that   particular   ghost  ,    shakes   his   head  ,    and   almost   smiles.        “      you   came   close   enough   to   death   on   scarif  ,    don’t   you   think?      perhaps   we   can   avoid   that   part   altogether   next   time.      ”

jyn huffs out an amused breath, the puff of air disrupting stray pieces of hair laying across her face. “ no rest for the wicked, huh, senator ? ” she retorts back but there’s a spark of amusement in her eyes. their conversation now is so different from the one all those years ago, when she’d been a scared and scrappy teen just trying to survive. that same girl, who hadn’t expected to live past eighteen, would undoubtedly be shocked to see them now. “ –– that is, if the death star doesn’t kill us first. ”

all wolves bite the same     ,    humans are not much different    .     they bite and chew on anything they could get their teeth on    ,     ready to tear skin and break bone    ,     and while his own motivations has started out differently inspector han felt like his calling came from containing those people with the worst set of teeth   .     to be the one to meet them head-on      ,     and counter their viciousness with his own    .    it would be a lonely existence    ,    gruelling and lonely work amidst a system that was filled with wolves and corrupted by them already     ,     but he was willing to do the work    .    he was always willing to do the work    .    his work    ,    to him    ,     was his life   .    what mattered of it anyway   .

what he did not sign up for was this    :     small-time criminals and petty crimes and him the one to bring them in and out of the holding cells or interrogation rooms    ,    recording statements of blubbering pedestrians who saw someone steal something at the airport shop    .    it was far beneath him     ,      and joo-won made it known to his superior any chance he got    .     taking the cuffs to himself again    ,    he lets the woman walk away from him    ,    more than willing to maintain the distance between them   .    his eyes lower at her   .    “    i am certain someone will do    ,    ”    the inspector says     ,     his jaw as clenched as hers   .    he has no time for this   .    “    until then    ,    you are not allowed to leave the country   .    and to remain in contact with us whenever we call you   .    if you do work for the fbi    ,    we will know sooner or later   .   not that it remedies any local crimes you may have committed here   .    ”

her anxiety surrounding the police and the ever-looming threat of being contained has not lessened in the months since she’d started working for the fbi ; if anything, it’s frequently exacerbated by the people she’s forced to call her superiors –– tyrants and power-hungry men who are all too eager to remind her of the tenuous position she’s in, how one bad word from them could send her right back to wobani. even now, in a standard city jail, she feels like she’s being backed into a corner, the power imbalance between her and the inspector hanging in the air around them. it’s not easy to puff out her chest and raise her chin like nothing’s wrong but she forces herself to do so, with a silent reminder than men feed off fear and won’t hesitate to exploit it. 

now that the cuffs are off her wrists, a physical weight has been lifted off her shoulders, returning some of the confidence she’d lost after spending the night in a cell. her smile is wolfish when she responds, eyes glinting in the dim fluorescent lighting of the room. his conditions are more than reasonable –– her contract won’t even let her leave the city, let alone the country –– but she shouldn’t have even gotten caught in the first place, on a trespassing count no less. she is less worried about the repercussions from some local police department and more so about the consequences of fucking up the mission to some degree ; this is the first time she’s stumbled this hard in the past few months, had gotten careless enough not to triple check her information. “ looking forward to it, officer. ”
