i think one of the most appealing parts of medalist to me is the way it portrays it’s child characters and how the adults respond to them.
it’s so easy for adults to dismiss kids dreams as childish fantasies or that they have no concept of whats realistic but in doing so, we forget that to a child, they wholeheartedly mean what they are saying. as such, it’s an adult’s, especially a parent or carer, responsibility to respond to these dreams and hopes openly and honestly.
when inori says she wants to be the top figure skater, tsukasa doesn’t dismiss this as childish ambition. he responds to her seriously and vows to help her follow her dream. even her mother, while initially dismissive and uncaring, she grows to acknowledge inori’s resolve and promises to support inori in skating as far as she wants to go. they treat her as a proper competitive athlete as opposed to a child following a hobby.
to a kid, the support of the adults around them can really change the path they follow. the children of medalist are never looked down, they are always taken seriously for the work the put in and the dream they want to accomplish and thats HUGE for a kid.
a childhood where you can follow your heart with the full support of the adults around you without being looked down upon—who wouldn’t resonate with a world like that.

I'll make a gold medalist out of you! // i am once again asking you to please read medalist it's the best manga that so few people are reading right now ❄🧊
the story excels at depicting kids learning and thriving in a supportive environment, the value of hard work over talent, and pushing your limits to achieve your dreams. inori is not only competing against the other figure skaters, but against herself most of all. medalist always hits so damn hard ⛸

abusive motherhood in chainsaw man
Tumblr media
just like a mother makima gives denji everything he needs for a good life.  mothers are supposed to raise us, care for us and nurture us. they feed us, support us through our education, and provide us with everything we need for a happy fulfilling life. that is why it is so hard to disentangle an abusive relationship with your mother.  it can be so hard to hate your mother. it can be so hard to cut ties with her and turn away from her. she gave you your life. she has given you everything you need. how can you hate someone who has done so much for you? this is common rhetoric used by abusive mothers. how dare you hate your mother who has slaved away to care for you, carried you for 9 months, and put aside her own wellbeing for your own.
Tumblr media
denji defies this by standing up to makima. despite all the negative things she said about him. telling him he did not deserve a good life for what he has done. he stood up to the mother who gave him everything and rescued him from his miserable and grim life. she gave him everything he could ever want: a purpose and a family that he loved so much.
Tumblr media
what makes it even better is that fujimoto effectively illustrates an abusive relationship between mother and child. despite it all, the pain that makima puts him through. at the end of the day she made him who he is today. she gave him that purpose. love for your abuser will always remain. no matter how much they have hurt you and destroyed you. part of you will love them. you will carry that pain and love with you for the rest of your life. there’s no clean cut. the scar on your heart is jagged and frayed. a wound that will never completely heal.
for many people who cut ties with their abusive mothers, it is still so easy to yearn for the simple and unconditional (not often) love of your mother. she holds you, bathes you, comforts you, and is there for you for open arms. that kind of love is something you can’t get from anyone. it is something you will always yearn for and miss.
Tumblr media
not only that denji breaks that cycle of abuse - from his dad (sorry i don’t touch on this i just wanted to mostly focus on abusive motherhood) and makima. he was working hard all on his own to give nayuta a better life that she had. he wants her to live a life free of control and abuse just like she presumably faced while being raised by the japanese government
