Rosalie Barrow Edge was a pioneering environmentalist and ardent advocate for the protection of wildlife whose journey as a conservationist began in the 1920s when she took up birdwatching. Her interest in birds was piqued when she learned that bald eagles were being killed indiscriminately in the Alaskan Territory. In 1929, She founded the Emergency Conservation Committee to protect all species of birds and animals. Five years later, she put an end to decades of the killing of birds of prey for sport in the Appalachian Mountains by buying a plot there and establishing the world’s first preserve for birds of prey – Hawk Mountain Sanctuary – in Pennsylvania. In 1948 the New Yorker described her as: “the most honest, unselfish, indomitable hellcat in the history of conservation”. The colorful fruit doves or fruit pigeons are mostly native to Southeast Asia and Oceania. As their name suggests, these little birds are frugivorous, thriving on fruits as their food. Unlike other birds, they are a little shy and are usually not seen anywhere around human habitations. They are restricted to their native habitats, primary forests, woodlands, coastal forests, lowland rainforests, and cloud forests. These species are so dependent on the nutrition from fruits that they are bound to go extinct if the issue of soil degradation is not addressed immediately.
