low empathy henry jekyll. low empathy jekyll who always shows compassion and kindness because he chooses to. low empathy jekyll with a very strong moral code. low empathy jekyll seeing empathy as a performance and a duty (one that he must excel in, as in all things). low empathy jekyll who knows how society expects him to feel and on most good days can half-convince himself he genuinely does. low empathy jekyll thinking there’s something inherently wrong with him. low empathy jekyll thinking he can cut the bad parts out. low empathy jekyll becoming hyde, who is much the same, but has no morals, logic, societal expectation, or interpersonal connection to make him behave kindly. low empathy henry jekyll/edward hyde.

I transcribed the entire Jekyll and Hyde musical (specifically the 2001 Broadway version) as a script/libretto! I posted a draft version some time ago, but I've since updated it to have nicer formatting and better navigation. Enjoy!

my lukewarm jekyll and hyde take is that andrea rivette is my favorite lisa/emma. she brings such a unique authority to her and i LOVE it. could write a paper on her choices in that role
also that woman could have chemistry with a ROCK

Do you ever think about how Jekyll & Hyde isn’t a story about a man with a split personality, but a man who tries to destroy the concept of societal norms and fails horribly? Let me explain.
Firstly, the Broadway production had a point when they decided to reprise Facade a bunch of times. Namely, that we’re all living in a masquerade, trying to appear better than we seem. There’s a near-constant self-policing wired into our minds, urging us to conform to standards of formality and decency and to judge others who don’t, even when they have a justified reason to do so.
Henry Jekyll is a man who wants to eradicate this self-policing mentality; the less time we spend needlessly moderating our own actions, the more freedom we have to act! And when those whom society ostracizes (mentally ill, deformed, red light district, morally grey, etc.) are free from the judgement of the populace, they can live in a world where they don’t have to worry about hiding themselves.
Except that you can’t exactly rip out the framework of society, because in the absence of rules, humans tend to default to their most basic desires. That tends to get people killed.
As I said, this is not a story of split personalities. It’s about the base thoughts and desires of man, which society exists to contain and moderate. Jekyll’s formula alters his brain in such a specific way that his cognitive code for the social masquerade is simply blocked out. The mask is torn away, and we get a glimpse of what really goes on in Jekyll’s mind. Turns out, he’s actually not that great of a person. At least, he would be a decent person if he saw the worth of the social masquerade, which he doesn’t.
On top of that, Jekyll refuses to acknowledge that he is the cause of his own peril, ‘othering’ his instincts as Edward Hyde. He is an idealist, so much so that he struggles to come to terms with his own fallibility. This ‘othering’ has spread to the general public’s perception of the story itself, further proving that hesitation to acknowledge oneself/others’s potential for sin is as much a part of the human condition as potential for sin itself. In short, Henry Jekyll had a point, but he also had it coming.

my jekyll&hyde headcanons part I
[notes: this is mostly henry/emma (lisa). also mostly based on the russian production since that’s the only one I saw live]
• they first met at a party of a fellow doctor to which emma accompanied her father. henry was rather shy and reserved at first, so emma made the first move and started a conversation with him.
• at some point, he finally dared to ask her for a dance and almost trembled or stepped on her feet several times due to excitement. she thought it was adorable.
• most of all, emma fell for the way his eyes lit up when he talks about something he’s passionate about, like his work for example, and for how he’s the only one who sees her for who she really is and not just her father’s daughter.
• he fell for her smile, her intelligence and her unconditional support and understanding
• despite the fact that he loves her unconditionally, Henry often doubts his relationship with Emma because he thinks that, considering how occupied he is with his work, no woman could ever be happy at his side and she deserves someone better than him. Even though Emma constantly assures him that she couldn’t think of a better husband than him and she’ll be happy only when she’s with him.
• Emma sometimes sneaks out and spends the night at Henry’s house only to make sure that he’ll actually get some sleep and won’t pull an all-nighter to work on his experiments again. He, of course, isn’t always happy about that since he wants to continue his work but he secretly appreciates how much she cares about his well-being and as soon as she’s fallen asleep in his arms he won’t dare to go back to work anymore.
• they had their first time the night after he proposed to her (i don’t mean the engagement scene but when he proposed to her in private), neither of them wanted to wait until they’re married.
• (I have like a full list of hcs about this which I fear no one would read) but Emma occasionally tops in bed. In general, she’s quite domineering in their relationship.
• sometimes when he’s in his study working on something, Emma sits cuddled up close next to him and occasionally asks questions about what he’s working on. He never told her just how much it means to him, but he’s overjoyed to see her showing sincere interest in his work.
• Emma loves flowers, especially peonies, hydrangeas and purple irises. Whenever Henry passes by a shop selling any of these he makes sure to stop and either buy them for her himself or have them delivered to her with a small note. 💌
• neither of them really enjoys social gatherings with other upper-class people, so whenever they’re invited somewhere they’ll usually just steal away to the garden or some empty room to spend some time on their own.
• Henry has pictures of Emma in his purse, as well as one on his nightstand and one on his desk which occasionally distracts him from working
• though she knows she can trust him 100%, Emma occasionally gets a bit jealous when other women are trying to flirt with Henry.
• Emma is quite a bit smaller than Henry. He likes to randomly and unexpectedly lift her up in his arms to kiss her.
• they always try to wear outfits in matching colours at every event they’re invited to. Just like they did at their own engagement party.
• (applies only to the version where she dies in the end): the reason why she wanted to k*ll herself after his death wasn’t just because he died but also because she already knew she was expecting his child.
please don’t cancel me .

so if you didn’t know the current version of the jekyll & hyde musical available for licensing is a frankenstein of many iterations of the show (1990 debut, 1994 recording, 1995 tour, 1997 bway).
the reason i know this information? well i just finished a run of the show as emma carew so this obviously drove me batshit the whole time. they are glaringly obvious when playing a character like emma that is a satellite love interest who had so much added/tweaked/removed.
my new project is to figure out what parts are from what versions because i am Normal! come along on my journey! or don’t.

literally obsessed with productions of the musical version of jekyll and hyde that have a framed picture of emma in his drawing room/his lab. specifically ones that have him return to it throughout the show when he is GOING THROUGH IT. it is an amazing way to show he is actively choosing to shield this from her. in this essay i will-

!!!!!YES!!!!!!!
i also think it is so interesting how productions and interpretations of the show are different based on which female lead they center the show around/about: emma or lucy. it changes the dynamic so intensely AND jekyll like entirely.
JEKYLL AND EMMA ARE MADLY IN LOVE SORRYYYYYY
anyway thanks for responding i am Totally Normal About Her
EMMA CAREW HOT TAKES PLEASE??
the essays* (fanfiction*) i could write** (have written**) about this woman.
generally speaking i think she has a lot more depth that both certain productions or even fans give her credit for. she works best as a character in tandem w/ lucy because they need to play off each other as foils. while lucy seems outwardly cynical and world-weary (when they're being based about her), she clings to hope and craves simplicity. inversely, emma should come off as very sweet and demure, while she actually has a lot of passion and intensity within her, and wants something more substantial than what is expected of her, especially by the more controlling men in her life (her father and simon). i think this aspect of her character is so important because it shows why she's so drawn to jekyll in the first place and i believe that the ending doesn't make sense if they aren't truly and deeply in love with each other.
also i think she should kiss jekyll and hyde on the mouth. with tongue.

ok revisiting this post to explain that most of this is because i just played her for awhile and spent sooo much energy defending my girllll
if you think emma carew is a 2D character you’re incorrect. underwritten and extremely wronged? well yes! but there is so much there if you actually listening to what my girl is saying and singing
emma carew i am going to think about you FOREVER. like you are everything to me you don’t get it…how do you stay so gracious when your entire future with your fiance you’ve spent all your energy nurturing, protecting, and DEFENDING is falling apart in front of you eyes? when you are just as passionate as your male partner but are overlooked because of your femininity? HOW??
