Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip
Using a random fic of mine as example..
The left example: ✅✅✅
The right example: ❌❌❌
Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!
If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…
#reading on paper is totally different from reading on a screen#and big/large blocks of text is very tiring to the eye#and makes it difficult to read#for everyone#which isn't only about legibility but also accesibility#visual breaks in between paragraphs and dialogue are important

every so often i just think about how good it was that the most foolproof one-size-fits-all solution for dealing with basically any horrifyingly evil supernatural monster of the week in the magnus archives was just. burying them in concrete. like yeah i can believe that a few tons of grey brutalist slop would stop the wolfman or pretty much anything in its tracks to be honest. they use that shit on nuclear waste. do you honestly think you're stronger than a nuke? a fucking nuke?

Because I write and never finish, so I'd be useless on discord, lol.
Well you said it yourself, that's something that happens to all of us!
I think having other people around who write or are also struggling with writing can be very reassuring, as well as encouraging once you get to share your ideas with others who are enthusiastic about them or can help you overcome a block.
I haven't made the gc yet but it's not my intention to pressure people into writing, more like hanging around with other authors in a relaxed writer's retreat lol. And if ideas start flowing, that's even better!
