Aragonite as a Preferred Calcium Source
The formation of the three calcium carbonate (CaCO3) polymorphs - calcite, aragonite and vaterite - is a multifaceted process involving numerous physical and chemical factors. Impurities present in mineral raw materials often affect which polymorph is formed first due to crystal lattice growth mechanisms not fully understood yet incorporated by crystal lattice growth during crystal growth; hence impurities may favor one over another when selecting among these polymorphs during growth processes influencing one polymorph over another in terms of relative preference among them all three forms.
Our research has demonstrated that incorporating magnesium ions into the surface layer of aragonite significantly decreases its surface stability, leading to a decreased binding energy for water molecules within its first hydration shell and, ultimately, having a direct impact on crystal structure itself. Understanding how surface chemistry of aragonite influences substitution energy of Mg is critical in understanding formation and stabilization mechanisms of CaCO3 polymorphs.
First-principles calculations were employed to examine the interaction between Mg and the surface of an aragonite crystallite. Simulations consisted of repeated slabs with 80 atoms each, 4 or 5 Ca and CO3 layers comprising an aragonite crystallite, fixed Mg-Ca atomic positions and their substitution energy calculated based on measured unit cell parameters of an aragonite crystallite.
This approach enabled us to calculate the substitution energy between slabs of aragonite with and without magnesium (Mg). Substitution energy calculations revealed a significantly lower value for slabs containing Mg compared with their pure counterparts, suggesting strong interactions between Mg and the aragonite surface.

Results also demonstrate that a low Ca2+/CO32- ratio favors the precipitation of aragonite over calcite, likely as a result of complexation between Ca ions and chelating agents during carbonation, slowing transfer into CaCO3 crystal lattices while simultaneously decreasing carbonation enthalpy.
Aragonite stands out as an attractive source of agricultural calcium because of its plant-available nature. While traditional limes consist of crushed rocks, aragonite is comprised of seashells pulverized by ocean waves; therefore it offers much greater surface area for uptake into soil.
