Hope everyone is staying safe and well! NZ is out of lockdown so we’re out and about again. Fingers crossed we can join bubbles with the other countries soon once things stabilise.
Tutorial #159 is the effortless Over the Shoulder Knot. This is perfect as a pragmatic way to wear a long scarf for autumn or winter. Drape the scarf across the back of your neck. Tie a loose knot on either the left or right end (depending on which shoulder you want the knot to rest on) but make sure you leave it loose enough to keep your fingers in there. Then pass the other end through the loop created by the loose knot with your fingers in them to keep it loose. Now tighten the knot firmly so that it holds the other end in place. Arrange so that the end going through the tightened knot is draped behind your shoulder and the knotted end flows freely down your chest.
I love this method of wearing it because it keeps one end firmly anchored over your shoulder rather than flying all over the place.

The next scarf tying tutorial is #158: the Scarf Necklace Twist! This is perfect using a long scarf or large square scarf folded on the diagonal and jazzing it up with a sparkly longer necklace.
Simply put on the necklace, place the scarf flat across the back of your neck with even length ends in each hand, and wrap each end of the scarf loosely twice or three times around the necklace. I like to leave the ends hanging for some volume.

Tutorial #157 is the Hair Bow. Fold a small square scarf on the diagonal or use a short rectangular scarf. Tie it around a piece of your hair and then tie a bow securely in place. For added security, you can fasten it to a hairtie.

Where would you suggest someone starting out to buy said 80 cm square scarfs?
It depends on where you live. A lot of the high street fashion stores will sell square scarves affordably in the accessories section. I also love thrift shops - I’ve actually found a surprising amount of vintage brand name scarves that have beautiful art printed on them. Otherwise, there are a lot of silk scarf sellers online worldwide.

Hiii what are the measures of the scarves that you are using?
Hi! I use a range of different sizes but primarily 80cm squares and other long rectangular scarves. If you’re just starting out, I recommend getting a square as your first scarf since you can always fold it into a long strip. It’s much more versatile.

Tutorial #156 is the Hooded Dual Layer Neck Drape. It’s kind of complicated, but the careful tying and folding makes it look artfully placed around your neck!
First, fold your square scarf diagonally in half so you get a triangle. I used a 90cm square scarf here. Next, drape the triangle on top of your head and then tie two corners under your chin. Bring the ends of that knot to the back of your neck and tie a secure double knot there. Slip the hood off your head so it rests behind you like a hoodie. Then rotate it 180 degrees so that the hood is now draped over your chest in front of you. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Tutorial #155 is the Flat Headband Braid. This is my saviour when I’m having a bad hair day. First, get a long rectangular scarf or fold a large square scarf on the bias into a long strip. Next, place it flat on your head and tie it around your head with a secure knot. Braid the ends of the scarf with the rest of your hair and then end the braid by double knotting the scarf ends around your hair. You don’t even need a hairtie! So handy.
I used this tutorial for a photo shoot, so if you’re interested in seeing it in action then keep an eye on the blog this time tomorrow. I have a special editorial dropping at 7:00PM NZT.
