Hey, is it unusual for my sexuality to warp a little when I shift between my kintypes? Like my romantic attraction doesn't change but one of my kind is nearly sex-repulsed and one of the others is pretty chill with sex but doesn't really prioritize it. I'm still on the ace spectrum somewhere all the time, but it seems like I bounce when I shift.
thatās totally fine!! sexuality is fluid, and when your core identity shifts itās totally normal if your sexuality shifts. this applies to gender as well !!!

Listen. This is a post for all non-kin, anti-kin, and extremely misinformed otherkin out there: Otherkin is not an LGBT identity.
Otherkin isnāt a sexual orientation, nor a gender identity. Being otherkin is non-physically (most frequently spiritually or psychologically) identifying as non-humanāand yes, Iām looking at all the people who claimĀ āI can define the word otherkin and how it applies to everyone however I want, there is no set definition of otherkin! uwuā when I say this, because that type of mindset and incorrect information is a part of why people misunderstand what otherkin is so frequently.Ā
Implying that otherkin is, somehow, an LGBT identity is harmful both to the otherkin community and the LGBT community, because youāre blatantly ignoring what both communities are about, and spreading complete misinformation on them at the same time. This also applies to the fictionkin community and the LGBT community, and any other community found under the alterhuman umbrella as well.

An Expanded List of Shifts, or what the heck Iām trying to tell you when I talk about them
(Please note that all definitions are not universally agreed upon, especially with the more spiritual shifts. These terms and most of the definitions are taken or adapted from a variety of sources, mainly Feralnatureās terminology page,Ā āThe Field Guide to Otherkinā (pages 126-128), as well as my own personal experiences and those of others.)
Shifts are, by and large, one of the best-known things about the otherkin experience. While not all kin experience shifts in the sense of moving back and forth between feelingĀ āmore otherā andĀ āmore humanā (generally, theĀ āotherā andĀ āhumanā sides are always present, no matter whatĀ āshiftā theyāre constantly experiencing), a large portion of otherkin do move back and forth between the two.
Shifts also have two general categories, although there is certainly overlap between them, depending on a personās beliefs about the nature of their kin side and the lack of consensus on exactly what each type of shift is. Usually, one could classify all shifts as either spiritual, mental, or both, depending. Psychological otherkin may not believe certain things fall under a spiritual category or vice versa, and not all kin experience every type of shift for any reason. Many shifts can occur simultaneously, which can lead to further confusion in classifying them.
I will make a note here that physical shifting (p-shifting) is impossible, and does not account for supposed minor changes in appearance due to other factors. If anyone claims to be able to turn into their kin side, grow claws/fangs/wings/fur/etc., tell them off immediately and do not engage further contact. Physical shifting is impossible.
Bilocation shifting, where your kin side physically manifests outside your body in full sight and full interaction with this reality as we understand it, is also impossible. However, people being able to see your kin side with astral/spiritual senses could be possible and is discussed below.
Some shifts have common ways of being shortened (such as p-shifting for physical shifting, ph-shifting for phantom shifting, m-shifting for mental shifting, etc.) the ones I just listed seem to be the most commonly used abbreviations. If anyone believesĀ āphantom shiftsā andĀ āphantom limbsā are harmful to amputees, I will direct you to take it up with @who-is-page or go through @liongoatsnakeās archives. Supernumerary phantom limbs are also a thing and always have been.

A General Guide to Different Shifts
Astral shift: Can refer to either someoneās astral, spiritual, or nonphysical form resembling that of their kin side, or when someone shifts while astral traveling or projecting. Can commonly overlap with phantom shifts, aura shifts, cameo shifts, as well as others depending on definition. Someone being able to see your kinself while you are astral projecting and shifted may account for a more believable variation of bilocation shifts, even if itās still fairly unlikely.
Aura/Auric shift: Easily confused with astral, phantom, or other shifts due to wording. Also described as a shift of oneās aura or energy to match that of their kin side, not necessarily in appearance but potentially just in feel, color, or generalĀ āsenseā. This is the definition I use, as itās different from other more spiritual shifts and have experienced them myself as such.
Berserk/Berserker shift: Considered to be a dangerous and unhealthy type of shift if not controlled, berserker shifts are generally involuntary and results in the individualĀ ālosing controlā of their kin side and going berserk, hence the name. Some view them as impossible or as a result of roleplay or possible mental issues, and while the latter two may be true in some cases, berserk shifts are all too possible, whatever the cause. Berserk shifts are often triggered by fear, feeling cornered or overwhelmed, and can result in harm to the individual or others and is honestly a terrifying thing to experience.* A moreĀ ātameā version, however, may be incorporated into magical practice or ritual drama, but please do so safely.
Cameo shift: Any other type of shift but to an animal, mythical being, character, etc. that is not someoneās kin side. Cameo shifts can result in confusion about oneās kintypes and might not be recognized as such until later. Cameo shifts could also potentially be caused by soulbonds, spirits, guides, etc. and it could be debated as to whether cameo shifts include forced shifts when the person does not normally experienceĀ ānaturalā cameo shifts (i.e., unprovoked, even by outside sources such as seeing the animal/mythical being/character/etc.) or not.
Dream shift: Dreaming about being your kin side, shifting during the course of a dream, or generally seeing and perceiving yourself as your kin side while asleep. Can potentially overlap with cameo shifts, depending on who you ask.
Hybrid shift: When you feel mixes aspects between one or more kintypes (or cameo shifts mixed with your normal shifts if you are not polykin). This doesnāt even have to be in the same category of shifts, it can be a mix of different shifts, but with two or more total kintypes present in the shift.
Mental shift: A change in mentality, thought patterns, and even personality and actions (such as walking a certain way or essentially becoming nonverbal) become more like your kinself than your day-to-day self. Mental shifts can also alter things like personal preferences and food cravings. Occasionally will border on berserker shifts, but hopefully this is pretty rare. Mental shifts, like any other shift, can occur on their own or combined with other shifts. Some would argue that sensory shifts fall under mental shifts, rather than their own category.
Phantom shift: The sensations of body parts or physical (or even spiriitual) aspects of your kin side. This can range from wings and tails and ears to fur, claws, fangs, scales, horns, and even certain types of powers and abilities while not manipulating energy. A lot of people suspect they are otherkin due to the persistent presence of phantom shifts throughout their lives.
Sensory shift: Sensations becoming more heightened or dulled or that generally alter to a similar level of what your kin side would experience. This is usually attributed to a change in perception of those senses, rather than someoneās actual sensory thresholds being changed. Can also apply to less talked-about senses such as sense of balance, sense of direction, and even heightened reflexes. The difference between sensory shifts and mental shifts is often an individual distinction.
Shadow shift: A shift in the perception of others, or even yourself, and works similar to an accidental glamour and may be the cause of several so-called physical shifts. In certain lighting or during a casual passing by, something about you looks far more like yourĀ āotherā side than normal. This could be eye color, facial structure, possibly even the manifestation of phantom limbs out of the corners of someoneās vision.

*I have experienced involuntary berserk shifts in the past and they are, quite honestly, embarrassing. I did manifest phantom limbs and it felt very much like a strong, uncontrolled mental, phantom, aura, and sensory shift all in one nasty package. I have learned to control them now, thankfully, and I do occasionally use aspects of those shifts or something similar in magic.
