It's so strange the relationship I have with men in my life.
My father is obsessed with the past. He is constantly attempting to reclaim his childhood. Comics, movies, television. He never talks about anything new.
So when I finally had a father in law he was so different than my own father. He was interested in new things, bought new technology, worked and had relationships with his younger co-workers and talked about his friends.
My own father has no friends.
My FIL would go out. He would drink. Talk about the news and public events. He was alive. He did what people do when they are alive. He talked about his relationship with his wife, tried new things, he attempted to understand video games and watched new movies.
My own father doesn't.
And I cannot believe that I lost someone like that.
I for 12 years has someone who was alive and acted alive and lived in the world. And maybe we didn't talk but we could talk when I was in town. He had things to say, was interesting, and had interests.
But then he passed away last week.
And while my own father may have a heartbeat it's a bummer I have two dead dad's.

playing dredge. sailing around at night. see another ship on the water blaring its horn and beelining at me. think wtf and start heading back to the dock bc im not prepared for whatever this interaction is gonna be. the ship is much faster than me but thats ok, im pretty close to shore.
ship gets within viewing distance. the horn sounds kinda off. the lights in the windows don't look much like windows any more. there's a weird and distinctly un-ship-like shape under the water.
it's not a fucking boat. it's a fish pretending to be a boat. a big fucking fish chasing after me trying to trick me into thinking it's a fellow fisherman. when i get into range of the dock it shies away from the light and darts back underwater so fast it's like it was never there. i close the fucking game and never open it again.

I've only been playing it since the weekend but Dredge is an amazing game. The atmosphere, the fear, the music. They all build on each other so well and scare me and make me smile.
With each fish I catch with too many heads or eyes it fills me with a need for more.

I've spent my time making a trrpg and I finally feel like I've come up with a name and a premise.
I'm debating putting it here for free once it's more put together.

The Spanish galleon San Diego
The San Diego was a galleon about 35 meters long with 4 decks, weighing 700 tons, and was built in 1590 at the Cebu shipyard. Originally named San Antonio, she was intended for merchant service, but at the end of October 1600, by order of the Vice-Governor and General of the Philippines, Antonio de Morga Sánchez Garay, she was taken to the harbour of Cavite to be converted into a warship. News had come from the Viceroyalty of Peru, that a Dutch squadron was heading for the archipelago, with plans to take it over from the Spanish Crown, which represented Philip III in 1600. The Netherlands, which had considered itself independent since 1588 but was not recognised as such by Spain until 1648, was in its great heyday - the so-called Golden Age. Their trade was flourishing and now they wanted to expand and tried to establish colonies in America and Asia. The Philippines were more than just interesting, they were an important stopover for trade with China and Japan.

But now the Spanish were there and the Dutch were eager to get it. And so Antonio de Morga had to secure Manila and convert existing ships to defend his territory. A small squadron, including the San Diego, set out on 12 December 1600 to search for the enemy and found him on the morning of 14 December, about 50 kilometres south-west, in the midst of difficult weather conditions. These were the Mauritius, the Dutch flagship, and the Eendracht, a small advance party to scout the area.

At first the Mauritius also seemed to be an easy target for the San Diego, who was twice the size, armed with 14 guns and had four hundred men on board, more than the entire enemy fleet put together. But unfortunately, this enormous equipment was also counterproductive for her: she did not have enough ballast to ensure her stability, and the weight, together with the waves and the strong wind, posed an unexpected threat. She managed to ram and board the Mauritius without firing a shot, as the gun ports could not be opened, because of the large guns which came from the fortress in Manila.

A battle that probably represents the San Diego and the Mauritius
A six-hour battle ensued, but Olivier van Noort, the Dutch admiral, resisted with all his might and even set fire to his ship to bring the San Diego down. Morga, who commanded her by himself was unable to risk his men, and  returned to the San Diego. But the San Diego was like a stone in the water, and this had been entering the ship for hours.  As a result, she ran full to the brim and began to sank in front of the Dutch. The vice-governor was able to save himself together with a hundred of his men, but the other 300 drowned or died trying to swim away, while their skulls were crushed by the courtesy of the Dutch when they were rowing.

The human and material cost was enormous but it was successful because the loss of the Mauritius caused van Noort, who was wounded but also survived, to renounce attacking the Philippines and put an end to his ephemeral expedition by assuming his losses (as was customary, he had financed it himself).

San Diego’s remains by Emory Kristof
In 1992, Franck Goddio and his team managed to discover the wreck and recovered a total of 34,407 artifacts, including Chinese porcelain, Japanese samurai swords, Portuguese cannons and Mexican coins. The artifacts were shown in exhibitions all over the world before they came to the National Museum of the Philippines as a permanent exhibition.
