Fieldwork Chapter 14
In error, I forgot to assign your fieldwork assignment for the chapter on power, Please follow the directions below and submit via BlackBoard before Thursday.
Every relationship has a powerful dynamic. In some, you have power over another person. In others, someone has power over you or the dynamic of power may shift back and forth depending on the circumstances.
Make a list of all the relationships and interactions you have in the course of a day: with family, friends, teachers, students, and others. Or watch a television show or movie and observe the relationships of power represented there.
1. Describe the way power is balanced in each relationship you experience or observe.
2. How is power organized? Can you see the intersections of age, gender, income, race, religion, sexuality, or citizenship?
3. What political negotiations are present in these relationships?
4. Consider how these power dynamics were established and how they might be changed.
5. To deepen your understanding of the power of the state, make a list of all the ways you encounter the state in a given day. These may be at home, at school, in the office, or on the street. Representations of the state on television and radio, as well as in newspapers or movies, all contribute to the construction of the state as concrete, real, and powerful.
6. How do these representations of the state reinforce the conception of the state as the primary institutional form through which social relations are experienced?

I interviewed my Great Grandmother Mama Byrd this is how she came to America:
My name is June Garner my maiden name is June fowler. I married Douglas Garner when I was sixteen years old. We met in my home town Peters Borough. Douglas was stationed on an air force base in Alconbury a couple miles away from my house. One Saturday evening we crossed paths, and he asked my friend who I was. About three days later he caught another bus to my home to see me. At the time I didn’t think he was that interested, nor did I think he would be my future husband. He knocked on the door asking for me, and father George Fowler answered. He told him I was sick, and that he could see me one I got better. After, I regained my health we went out for a night on the town walking through the cathedral’s park area sightseeing, and talking. I was only sixteen years of age and he was two years older then me, so I couldn’t do much aside from dancing, talking, and sightseeing. Afterward, he took me home and then caught the bus back to the base. He came to see me two or three times a week for eight months.
On February 3rd, 1962, we got married and on March 31st of 1963 we had our first daughter Theresa Garner. When we married, he was relocated to Verdun, France for about one year. We made friends on base playing cards, and going shopping. Douglas and I decided we needed to move to America. We had to make a choice of who would come to America first. We decided I would come first because I couldn’t speak French, nor was I old enough to drive so I was in an uncomfortable situation. Douglas knew how to speak little French, but he could also stay on base with other Americans. Which was the deciding factor for us. When I came to America all I had was a piece a paper in my pocket that had an address on it. I landed to New York and caught a grey hound to Alabama. I took a cab from the bus station and gave the cab driver the paper with the address. He knew where the address was and took me there. That’s where I met Douglas’s family for the first time. My daughter and I arrived at his family’s house where we stayed in their spare house. It was small house with one bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and small yard. He returned to American in six months’ time. Looking back it was a funny situation but it all worked out.
After waiting for Douglas for so long I learned that certain words have different meanings. One time I called a young a “quire little thing” meaning he was weird, but his mom was very offended. I also learned that the food was different I never have corn bread and biscuits. My mother in laws were kind enough to teach me the American culture after a few years. After, 12 years I went back home to visit my parents taking my kids for them to meet for the first time. I hadn’t seen him since I was married in sixty-two. We stayed for about a week enjoying each other’s company until it was time for us to fly back to the states.
Ma ma Byrd never talked about any hardships during our phone call aside from word and food difference. Grandpa died of a heart attack after their marriage. She currently lives in Alabama with her new husband and visits her family in Peters Borough.
i hope you enjoyed some of my family’s history

Family Legacy, Making Memories
Families are small components in life that make up societies. Each unique or similar in their own ways and can be traced back to hundreds or maybe even thousands of years ago.
But how are these generations and generations of tradition and culture and customs kept alive after so many years? The key to answering is being able to trace those ancestors back using a tool called a family tree.
Family trees can be used to discover Where are your family originated from, where your family migrated to, who held the power in certain households, and sometimes you biological factors that were carried on through your family.
For example if you are a twin, and your grandmother is a twin and her grandmother was a twin, you can identify this pattern by looking at your family to discover that the gene for twins gets passed down to every other generation. Or perhaps in another family, the grandfather is married to many wives and has many children just as his father did before him. This can predict some of the customs that were dominant within your family at some point in time. Family trees help tell story and preserve those stories throughout time.
My Family Tree
Tumblr media
To some my family tree may look very complicated but to other it may look vet short and condensed. This is because it contains the only people in my family that I have interacted with ob a regular badis throughout my life.
My mother’s family is on the left and not very extensive. Especially because we don’t particularly associate ourselves with them due to ongoing drama they have caused. Although that side of my family is actually very big, I do not know anyone else other than those included.
My father’s familt may look a little bigger only because I included some family that is not related to me by blood. My sister and I have the same father and different mothers . But because my sister and I are so close, she became my godmother. Her and my mother both got remarried and my godmother’s husband had two daughters that I consider my little sisters. They all took a part in raising me and guiding me in my life. So they are present on my tree as well.
There isnt a person who specifically cultiveates this tree. I was just never exposed to the rest of my extended family.
One pattern that I did notice is that my mom’s parents had two girls and dad’d parents had two boys so maybe that will be reflected once my cousin, siblings and I have children as another emerging pattern.
Also on my father’s side, all of the men in the family have beautiful easy to manage silky hair that none of the women were blessed with. Now don’t get me wrong, I do love my curly hair. But having their hair type whi make my mornings alot easier.
Conclusion
Family tress always tell a story, whether you may realize it or not. It its a tangible map of your past and can be reflected in your future as well. It is very important to understand where you came from so you can know where you’re going. And family is sacred, there to protect and guide you, so keep them close.
P.S. I inspired one my kids at my job to do a family tree too and he wanted you guys to see his too !
