Only Time Will Tell

SCENE ONE

Two friends, discussing their plans for spring break. Friend 2 is in love with Friend 1, but Friend 1 doesn’t know.

Friend 1: I’ll be gone on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but I should be back by Friday.

Friend 2: Will you miss me?

Friend 1: I’ll see you next week, it’s not that long of a break.

Friend 2: We see each other every day, I think a week is kinda long.

Friend 1: It’ll be fine, I’ll FaceTime you every time I get a chance.

Friend 2 (smiling): I’ll be waiting by my phone every day.

Friend 1: I expect nothing less.

The two friends hug and part ways for the week. They FaceTime once a night. They have amazing chemistry, and Friend 2 has growing feelings for Friend 1. On the last night of break, they have the following conversation.

SCENE TWO

Friend 2: I want to dye my hair but I don’t want to damage my curls.

Friend 1 (jokingly): You need to get your priorities straight. The average for the midterm was an 80, and what did you get again?

Friend 2: I got a 42! Close enough. I think I’m going to switch my major. Or drop out. Or transfer. Honestly, I might change my mind next week so you shouldn’t listen to a word I say.

Friend 1 (laughing): Do I ever?

Friend 2 (seriously): Honestly no, not really.

Friend 1: What do you mean?

Friend 2: I have something important to tell you. I don’t know if it’ll ruin our friendship or I would have told you sooner.

Friend 1: You’re scaring me.

Friend 2: Trust me, it’s a scary thing to say out loud. FaceTime feels too casual. Can I talk to you over breakfast tomorrow?

Friend 1: Of course! Can I bring this girl I’m talking to? Things are getting kind of serious between us and I want to introduce her to my best friend.

Friend 2 (dejectedly): Yeah sure. See you tomorrow.

Friend 1: If I come back it will be just for you. See you tomorrow!

Friend 2 hangs up the phone.

SCENE THREE

The next day. Friend 2 is sitting at a table at the student center, tapping their foot and waiting for Friend 1 and their girlfriend. They both finally walk through the door.

Friend 2: Hey! How are you? (goes in for a hug)

Friend 1 (returning the hug, hesitantly so as not to offend the girl and make her think there’s anything going on): Better now that I get to see you. This is my… girlfriend. Girlfriend, this is my best friend. Make yourselves acquainted.

Girlfriend: Hey, it’s nice to meet you. She talks about you all the time.

Friend 2 (jokingly): Oh yeah, she’s my biggest fan if you didn’t already know.

The joke falls flat. No one laughs because of the tension in the air.

Friend 1: What was it that you wanted to tell me? I’ve been thinking about it all night.

Friend 2 (stuttering): I- I just wanted to say-

Friend 1 (nervous): If you think I’m attractive just say that.

Friend 2: I- I think I would die for Doja Cat! That’s all I wanted to tell you. You should’ve seen your face last night when you thought it was something serious! (fakes a laugh)

Friend 1 (laughing): You idiot! You had me scared all night just to play a prank on me?! Typical you. See (talking to Girlfriend, gesturing to Friend 2), didn’t I tell you they were funny? (Now talking to Friend 2) I told her but she didn’t listen. Oh well.

Friend 2 musters up a fake laugh.

Friend 2: Hey, I’m going to go study for my test next week. Don’t wanna pull another 42.

Friend 1: Have fun, I’ll see you later!

Friend 2 leaves, immediately bursting into tears as soon as they get to their room. They call their mom for advice.

Friend 2: I couldn’t do it, Mom.

Mom: Why not? What do you have to lose?

Friend 2: Her friendship. Her laughter. Her jokes. Her ability to make me feel better no matter what. I think I’ll just wait for the feelings to go away so I can keep her close.

Mom: Are you sure? I’ve never seen you have feelings for someone as strongly as you do her.

Friend 2: Yeah but who knows? I’m only 19. There will be more opportunities for love.

Mom: Yeah you’re right, love. Don’t stress yourself out too much.

Friend 2: Now what do I do?

Mom: You will be okay.

Friend 2: Only time will tell.

“You didn’t deserve to go through something traumatic like that. There will always be more opportunities for love”

“I know you’re toxic because I’m toxic and I’m still talking to your goofy ass”

“Do you want to go thrifting for your birthday?” “I am definitely down. What makes you want to hang out with me on my birthday hmmm?” “Birthdays are important to me, I’ve never celebrated yours with you. Plus I know you hate your birthday so I wanna try and make it a good day. Plus I’m on spring break next week and I have nothing to do” “Fair enough”

“I had a lit cigarette in my mouth and it flew into my eye. Fucking burnt” “That’s what you get for smoking cigarettes” “How come everyone loves celebs smoking cigarettes but not me?”

“It’s my thing, my hobby” “Do you have any other hobbies” “Um… Self love?”

“Jesus your humor needs work sometimes”

“Your humor is questionable”

“Now what do I do?” “You will be okay” “Only time will tell”

“He’s really out here tryna bake his mental illness away”

“Why was the wordle so hard today? What the fuck is a swill?”

“If I come back it will be just for you”

“I ran out of black face masks and had to use a blue one, I felt so ugly”

“You need to get your priorities straight”

“Here, I’ll propagate my pothos plant for you so you can have one of your own”

“I am in serious debt. Want to get miso soup with me?”

“I told her but she didn’t listen. Oh well”

“We said I love you to each other for the first time I am literally shaking”

“What are you trying to cope with? You don’t live in Ukraine”

“Will you walk home with me? I forgot my box cutter” “I would do anything for you”

“You always look so put together” “Thanks, I’m pretending”

“The Euphoria season finale is tonight, are you watching it?” “Yeah but I work until fucking 11, this shit sucks. I feel like I’m not living life the way I’m supposed to”

“We had sex once but then he blocked me and I honestly forgot it happened. It was not memorable to say the least”

“It’s so windy, I feel like I’m in Chicago”

“Tomorrow?” “Yes”

“She tried telling me my vibes were off”

“I didn’t know you were staying here”

“I love Trader Joe’s”

“Life feels like a fever dream recently” “Yeah I know. Make sure you aren’t actually sick with a fever though, go get COVID tested”
