kaz guards his secrets and his thoughts well. taila knows that they are one of the few people privy to it, for kaz keeps to himself despite being encouraged to mingle with the other from their order. taila doesn’t criticize them for it. now, they make the ink ebb away from the paper, making what taila had been working on - an igniter, with a slot in the base for hiding of acetone - disappear. they brush their fingers over blank paper, then fix dark eyes on the alkemi across them.
“ do you want me to tell you not to go to ketterdam? ” they ask now in fragmented kerch. “ if that vengeful shadow is going to rule over your head, then do it. take revenge on the man that placed you here. ”

Their retort comes quickly and without hesitation, like the snapping of a whip in the air. Yet, despite the snappiness of their reply Kaz seems to remain relaxed in their seat. He knew of Talia and their special ability that allows them to create and give tattoos in the quarter the amount of time it normally took and it made sense that they might be able to sense other inks already present upon the body. Such as the simple, curved black ‘R’ that resides upon their bicep, an acknowledgement of the name and family he had left behind. But that was private and a piece of their past that they hadn’t shared with anyone — not even those closest to him such as Inej or Jesper.
He studies Talia carefully, the dark brown of his reflective like glass or coffee that had gone bitter in the brewing, as if trying to root out why they were asking such a thing based off sight alone. “You can sense it can’t you? If you can do that then you can guess the shape without wasting your breath asking what it is.”
others might’ve been a bit put off by the curt, short response, but taila hardly seems bothered at all. kaz doesn’t seem to be bothered by the question, either; in fact, his eyes are perfectly calm as they regard taila, the bright lights of the barrel leaving yellow and green reflections. now, taila avoids eye - contact, instead focusing on the papers underneath their hands for their business. they could do that, if they so wished, the same way they could feel the ink formed into the crisp, crisp kerch letters on the papers.
“ the question had opened grounds for a story, if you so wanted to tell it, ” they say, although they know that kaz brekker does not tell any stories and lets others do it for them. “it is in a spot hidden away from prying eyes. i am curious about what it is, and who had managed to tattoo it on you. as it surely wasn’t me. ”

they have little idea if they are allowed to speak to a dreg, not when the dime lions and the dregs stand where they are, and so soon after the little… mishap that had occurred earlier, right on the edges of dime lions territory where it meets dregs territory. erin has never done well with fights, despite their role as a gang member, and she could only send her thanks to the particular dregs member who had been able to soothe over the members of his gang that had been prepared for a fight.
erin knows his name. she would know it even if she hadn’t worked in a gambling hall, for the dime lions murmur as many warnings about his as they do about dirtyhands, amicable nature and all.
“ i didn’t think they would… be that fight - hungry. it tends to happen, especially near the gambling hall, but - ”

in regards to taila’s name:
if ravkan primarily follows after russian and other slavic languages, that means that the language is most likely gendered in masculine, feminine, and neuter. this applies for names as well. this also has some weight when it comes to taila and their gender.
taila’s name is not their birth name, as they chose it themselves. it cannot receive majority of ravkan diminutives due to its nature. they do have a patronymic that they don’t introduce themselves with in ketterdam, but that is gendered as well so they tend not to use it. they share their last name with their father. however, due to the gendered systems of the ravkan language, taila went forward and dropped the -a tacked onto their last name (volkov) and instead replaced it with an -o as a nod to their gender identity.
as a result, taila’s full name is technically taila volkovo.
#ok i had to edit things in tailas bio (ie making their father ravkan instead of kerch) to make this work in my head how i wanted it to#so keep an eye out for that#but. yea. i am not a russian speaker but i am a croatian/bosnian/serbian speaker which are other slavic languages#so thats how i tackled this in my head in terms of taila making things more gender neutral ie their last name#taila. — HEADCANONS.

talia can feel the ink underneath the thinnest layer of his skin. it’s not the dregs tattoo; they know the placement of that one. every dreg member gets it on their forearm, and kaz brekker is hardly any different, even if he dresses like he’s from the zelver district as opposed to all of the dregs member dressing as if they popped out of a crudely - colored childrens’ book. the crow and cup is on their forearm, but there is something else further up, something that taila couldn’t see.
they cock their head. they have to roll over the ravkan in their head, then translate it to kerch for it to come out properly. “ what is that other tattoo you have? ”

she’s heard things about them - about dirtyhands, about the bastard of the barrel. pekka talks about brekker with such a scathing tone whenever he notices that business for the emerald palace is lower, as there’s steerers from the crow club every once in a while. erin doesn’t raise a hand against them; it’s not her business. what is her business is how pekka treats grisha.
she’s one, by all definition. maybe not in the same way, and perhaps easier to hide, but she is one, in her own way. they settle a hand over the dime lions tattoo on their forearm, staring at the floor instead of those ancient, scathing eyes. the design of everything here is darker compared to the palace.

lil headcanon dump for talia to match my erin one from earlier <3
they have a very prominent sweet tooth, but they never grew up in a spot to actively enjoy these sweets so - if you want a gift for them :) give them the most tooth - rotting sweet ever. they’ll love it
predominantly their tattoos are blackwork tattoos, including the gang tattoo work they do. they can do color, but getting the ink and materials for that is a lot harder, especially making sure the colors look good
absolutely refuses to do any brothel tattoos. usually helps remove them
speaking about tattoos - taila does their own tattoos, and because of their abilities, they can remove and put them on at will. so there’s a lot of shifting tattoos week by week whenever they get bored by something or decide that they didn’t like the design/placement - usually it’s objects/symbols instead of animals
wears platform boots. instantly puts them at two inches taller. they refuse to look at anyone in the eye by tilting their head back though
has a lower pitch in voice, usually more baritone but there’s always a sort of flatness to it
doesn’t tend to use a lot of weapons, especially since they are employed technically by multiple gang leaders - but they do carry a knife strapped to their shin
