we started making a new record last week. it’s nice to do something smaller again, and not have to worry so much about how everything coheres or to try and tell a larger story, or just to feel the pressure of a full-length in general. it’s just four little self-contained universes (univers...i? no shut up), and we can really spend the time to drill down a little more into each song.
anyway. i think they’re gonna be our best universes yet. the songs on the We Choose Pretty Names LP (which you can buy right here, please, my house is full of records, my family is dying, etc. etc.) are so old now, and i think we’ve covered a lot of ground as a band since then, and it shows in the new stuff - it’s the closest we’ve gotten yet to the sound in my head (which, ironically, was only possible when i stopped being so precious about the songs! who knew?!). it feels a lot more visceral. i know i’m trying to project outward a little more in my words. i’m not entirely sure what’s changed there, but so much of the LP was bound up in my head, and i think i can write better when i break out of that. it’s easy to get swept up in yr own psychodrama, i guess.
we haven’t recorded any vocals yet, and the lyrics keep shifting and changing, so i’m not quite sure yet how it’s gonna crystallise. but it feels more urgent. the whole thing of kermes only really started to cohere when i realised the nature of the connection i wanted to create. and the stakes are higher now, in the world, than they were four years ago. it’s a strange & contradictory moment in history to be A Queer, but i’m just tryna have some fun with it.

so the other week i found a disposable camera from last summer that i’d totally forgotten about, with some photos from our EU tour with Great Wight. most of them are at least 75% obscured by bad lighting or errant fingers but there are some okay ones! here are the okay ones!

in other news, we’ve been announced for this year’s Handmade Festival on the 5th of may! hoping this year won’t be a repeat of our first appearance where i spent the entire set trying to figure out which exact bit of my guitar was broken!
not much else to say rn - we’re going into the studio next month to make a new record, and there’s just a handful of gigs announced for the year so far. things have been pretty quiet on our end since november and it’s been nice to have the chance to focus on writing but i am absolutely desperate to play a show. hopefully see some of you on the 16th in manchester!

back in april, the day after our album launch show, we recorded a couple of songs from the LP live in our friend ant’s basement. it feels only appropriate to round off 2018 by sharing some of that with you today! you can check out “boyfriend” and “time to shut him up” in the video above. shoutout to ant for making it sound pretty great (especially considering there were literally 3(!!!!) mics used on the drums!), and rhiannon and adrienne for filming!
this is our last thing for 2018! thanks eternally for supporting us over the last year, it’s been kinda crazy and we’ve done a lot of cool stuff that still doesn’t feel totally real to be honest. as a little thankyou for being the best, if you join our mailing list you can get 25%(!) off everything(!) in our merch store from now until midnight 9/12/18. and everything comes with a free download of the album, cos we want you to have it. consider it an early christmas present :)

hello! we have some more shows for you here, these are our last outings of the year and we’re very pleased to be playing some of our fave cities and venues. in particular JT!!! we haven’t played at JT yet in 2018 which feels absolutely crazy, so v happy to rectify that!

our first uk shows since june, very excited to be back At It in three very L-tastic cities
first up is LEICESTER! and it’s TOMORROW (8th)! playing glitterfest w/ marika hackman, youth man, nova twins & loads of lesta mates. we're headlining the firebug stage, so stick around after marika :)
then on the 14th we are playing in LONDON at diy space w/ sister ghost & owls of now, & then on the 22nd we are playing in LEEDS at reb’elle fest which has a fully ridiculous dream lineup with so many bands that i don’t even know where to start, just, like, LOOK at the fucking poster, goddddd
